Thoughts from the President…
Happy April,
Well we have a couple of wonderful things happening this month:
First Easter, which is Sunday, April 21. I love Easter. Make sure
your Easter Baskets are ready for the delivery of all that Easter
candy and colored eggs. I pray this year the Easter Bunny will
leave, a year supply of chocolate, along with fabric, thread,
patterns and of course new rulers. After all, we are quilters, right?
And what goes better together than quilting and chocolate!
Second is our Central Oregon Spring Shop Hop.
It is Thursday through Saturday, April 25-27. So make sure you check your
fabric stash and see what it is that you need or want. The shops
always have new fabrics and inspiring samples and patterns. So lets go out
and support our local quilt shops.
It will be a great week starting off with Easter and ending with
Central Oregon Spring Shop Hop.
Hope to see you out and about.

PROGRAM MEETING
April 9 —10 am @ SHARC Central Oregon quilter Anna Bates, describes herself as "a
passionate person who is passionate about everything...a
110% kind of personality," and we couldn't agree more!
That passion and enthusiasm, as well as her warm and
genuine personality, is what has made Anna's "Woolie
Mammoth" blog and her "Quilt Roadies" YouTube Channel
such a phenomenon. So it's no wonder that MMQG
is passionately excited about welcoming Anna as our April
speaker and seeing a trunk show of her beautiful quilts!

10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Homestead Quilts, La Pine
News from the Service Projects Committee:
**At the April Sit-n-Sew session, we’ll be mak-
ing four-patch blocks and using them to com-
plete panel quilts.
**We’ve put together some rag quilt block kits
for MMQ members to make at home. All you
need to do is put the three layers of each block
together and sew an X across the block. The
completed blocks will be made into quilts at fu-
ture Sit-n-Sew sessions. Kits will be available at
upcoming guild meetings. Thanks for your help
making service quilts!
APPLIQUÉ GROUP
"The appliqué group meets the third
Tuesday of each month at Bevalee
Runner's house from 9:30 to noon.
This year's theme is "Sea Life" and
all members of the guild are invited to submit a hand appli-
quéd quilt with that theme for our exhibit in the Sunriver
Quilt Show in August. You do not need to be a regular ap-
pliqué group member to participate, but please let Bevalee
know if you are planning to take part."

cooperation.
BLOCK OF THE MONTH
With the cancellation of the February education meeting,
Nancy Fischer presented both February and March BOM.
Instructions are posted on the MMQ website under
“Forms & Quilt Tips”. Some may say that she is presenting
a “unit of the month” as the mystery quilt is being done in
units, not blocks. Don’t forget to bring your completed
February and/or March units for a chance to win a fat
quarter.

Just a note to let those
of you that were unable
to attend the Education
Meeting at BJ’s in
March, that I reported
that I have only
received 10 potholders,
well after the meeting
that became 13!! We have a ways to go to reach our yearly
goal of 2 per member. Please start thinking about making a
couple of potholders for the Bazaar. They really don’t take
much time or effort to do. Dorothy Spain has again made
up some kits, which are very easy to finish. So please try
to get a couple made before August. It isn’t really that far
away.

DONATIONS—SUNRIVER QUILT SHOW
Sunriver Quilt Show Quilting Books, Magazines, Patterns,
and Fat Quarters Sale. Winter is the perfect time to go
through your quilting books, magazines, and patterns to see
what you would like to recycle by donating them for sale at
the Sunriver Quilt Show. There will be a donation box for
collecting the items at every MMQ meeting through July.
In addition to the quilting books, magazines, and patterns,
this year we will also include fat quarters! Look through
your fabric stash and see if you have any fat quarters you
wish to part with, or some high quality quilting fabric that
is left from a project or doesn't fit in with your preferred
color palette that can be cut to fat quarter size (18 x 22),
Fat quarter donations can be put in the same box as the
books (that will be at each MMQ meeting).

MMQ WEBSITE NEWS:
Consider Adding a Picture to Your MMQ Web Roster Pro-
file.
We have a lot of members. Do you remember who is
who? Well, I still have some difficulties... If you would
like to add your picture to the Roster display at Mountain-
MeadowQuilters.org, visit //wordpress.com/meand sign up
for an account. Once you upload a picture, your fellow
members will be able to distinguish you in a crowd.
Anytime you sign into a WordPress site (such as ours) with
your account’s registered email, your uploaded picture will
display next to your name. There is no cost for the ac-
count. The picture is called a “Gravatar”. Google that
term if you have more questions. It will tell you what the
Gravatar is used for, how it is created, and how it can be
changed. I promise to change mine from my dog’s picture
to a new picture soon. Oh, how I hate having my picture
taken…

MMQ Retreat
May 12-14, 2020
Riverhouse on the Deschutes (Bend)
Plans are well underway for our 2020 Retreat. Riverhouse has graciously offered to do a “dry
set” of the classroom arrangement for our team meeting this month. This allows us to see the
classroom table set up and fine-tune it for the best possible sewing, ironing and cutting sce-
nario.
We have 9 more spaces open for Maggie’s Radiant Feathered Star class. We are starting a
waiting list for the landscape class (Cynthia England) and Sit and Sew (independent sewing).
Make the beautiful 28 1⁄2” Radiant Star block with your choice of a Snowball or Kaleidoscope in the center. We will
study a variety of piecing techniques for perfect triangles, including foundation paper-piecing for the feathers. We begin
with instruction in basic pattern drafting to make a template for the star arms and to calculate the sizes of the block
components. Then we’ll continue with constructing the block and a discussion of options for making a medallion-style quilt
to showcase this stunning star.
Additional $6.00 pattern fee (pattern purchase online not included in class cost). www.dragonflyquilts.com
$15 Reserves your spot in the class. Final payments are due March 2020. Payment options are now available on the MMQ
website for your convenience (minimum $25). $250 classroom ($100 Sit and Sew) cost includes 2 plated breakfasts, 2
plated dinners, a lovely venue for classes and service for meals in the Riverhouse Convention Center, AV support, instruc-
tion for classes, and beverage (non alcohol) service.
Please contact Julia Jeans to register. [email protected] or 541-728-1286.
Questions? Contact Heidi Thaut, Retreat Chair: [email protected], 541-241-3756 (home) or 520-306-8382
(cell). No question is a silly question. :-)

Mountain Meadow Quilters Business Meeting Minutes –
March 12, 2019 SHARC – Sunriver, Oregon
Greeters: Heidi Thaut introduced 2 new members and one returning member.
Hospitality: Christine Watkins thanked Valerie Weber, Michelle Mullenberg, Patty Gates and Robin Bracken for providing
our treats today.
Thinking of You’s: Alice Hanson lost her husband in January. Diana Swenson fell and broke two vertebrae and displaced
one. Robin Bracken announced that Sandy Schmidgall is back. Sandy thanked everyone for their cards, telephone calls,
visits, driving her to medical appointments and prayers.
Announcements: Mike Carriger announced that his embroidery machine is back and he is back to doing name tags. Mike
passed a sheet around for sign ups for next year’s board. If you are interested, call Nancy Fischer, Lavelle Wallace or
Bonnie Schaefer to discuss their positions. Robin Bracken asked people to please consider volunteering for a position.
Heidi Thaut announced that the Maggie Ball class has 10 spots open for the 2020 retreat. Robin Bracken announced that
you need to sign your photo release form.
Programs: Marie Bostwick announced there are 3 spots open for Jackie Kunkel’s workshop on March 13. Please see Marcia
Schonlau if you want to sign up. In May there is another workshop with Allie Allee to make a wool pincushion. Marie then
introduced Jackie Kunkel: Jackie and Marie met 10 years ago in a Judy Niemeyer class. Jackie lives in Mesa, Arizona, but
is originally from the East Coast. She started her own business, Canton Village Quilt Works, in 2000 as a long arm
business. She wrote the book “Splash of Color” and is a certified instructor and certified quilt shop for Judy Niemeyer.
She is an instructor on Craftsy (now BluPrint) and fabric designer for Island Batiks. She has published patterns in quilt
magazines and for Aurifil and is a brand ambassador for Viking Husqvarna. Her website (cvquiltworks.com) sells all her
patterns, fabrics, books and Judy Niemeyer patterns. If you order from her website and mention that you were at this
presentation, she will give you a 15% discount on that order. She has also partnered with Quiltster. Quiltster is a
program that allows you to mock up your quilt. One of her patterns, “Island Breeze” is in Quiltster. When using Quiltster,
you can take pictures of your own fabrics to use in the mock up. She used to do podcasts, where she has interviewed
Marie Bostwick. She now does a Facebook Live at 1:30 pm (mountain time) on Wednesdays called “Watch Me Wednesday”.
Jackie typically buys 1/2 yard of fabric when it is black and white, but when she really likes a fabric she buys the entire
bolt which is great for backings. Stripes work well in sashing, borders and binding. The workshop quilt that she is
teaching is a variation of drunkard’s path and is named after her Nana, “Proud Mary”. She uses fabrics from many areas
of the world...Australia, Africa to name a few. She has two free patterns on her website. She has a quilt in Judy
Niemeyer’s book “Geese Migration”. A question was asked about prewashing; she does not. The question was asked: Does
she have a problem with mixing batiks with regular cotton fabrics? She does not use steam; she uses a dry iron. When
she is done with a block, she will gently mist with Best Press. The more you handle a fabric, the more stretch you will give
to a fabric. Question was asked if you need to take a Judy Niemeyer class before you attempt a Judy Niemeyer pattern
or kit. Jackie recommended watching the Craftsy (BluPrint) class and if you are determined, you should be fine. She then
showed a number of beautiful quilts.

Approval of Minutes: Robin Bracken asked if there were any corrections to the Business Meeting Minutes of January 8,
2019. There were no corrections. The minutes were approved.
Treasurer’s Report:
March Report: We’ve collected dues from 119 members, still 31 short of our expected number. If you haven’t already
done so, please get your dues in as soon as possible so we can offer all of our scheduled programs this year! We’ve had no
unexpected expenses so far this year, and our checking account currently has $7,200. We have $9,300 in our savings
account, which includes $6,400 set aside for the 2020 retreat (including $1,350 of participant payments that have been
made so far) and $2,900 remaining in “excess funds” for new guild quilt racks and other long-term equipment.
Mountain Meadow Quilters – April, 2019 Page 7
Mountain Meadow Quilters Business Meeting Minutes—continued
February Report: The focus of this report is the 2019 cash budget which was adopted by the membership on January 8.
The budget is very similar to that of 2018, with only a handful of changes. Unfortunately the budget does predict a net
loss for the year, which is obviously not sustainable. Unless we are able to significantly increase our bazaar sales and/or
membership dues revenue in 2019, it is likely our controllable expenses (read: programs, guest workshops, service pro-
jects, holiday party) will need to be reduced in the future.
Budgeted bazaar sales for the year is $5,000, which is in line with actual bazaar sales for the past two years, and budg-
eted membership dues is $5,250, identical to dues received in 2018. However, as of January 22 we had received only
$3,360 of 2019 dues, so please ask your fellow quilters to pay their dues as soon as possible so we can hold our fantastic
programs Marie has scheduled for us. According to our by-laws, members who had not renewed by January 31 are to be
dropped from the roster, so if this happens to you or someone you know, be sure to have them log-on to the website and
rejoin. Or you can send a check to MMQ if you prefer. Once you have paid your dues, access to the roster, newsletters,
photos, calendar, announcements, etc. will be available. Don’t miss out!
Budgeted expenses for 2019 have been adjusted for our new, larger storage unit rental (an increase of $900 for the
year), and for increased bank fees due to the use of our new online payment system. This increase is predicted to be
about $100 for 2019, but is likely to continue to go up in the future as more members pay for dues, workshops, the re-
treat, and our annual party online. Contrary to how it appears in this report, this is a good thing!
Unfortunately our 2020 retreat budget was hit with a budget decrease last year, as net income for the year was signifi-
cantly less than 30% of bazaar sales. Due to the policy adopted by the Board in 2018, the amount of cash that can be
transferred to the retreat fund any single year is limited to the LESSER of 30% of that year’s bazaar sales, or net cash
income for the year. This is to eliminate the chance of any of our cash reserves being used for retreat purposes. 2018
was the first time our net cash income was less than 30% of our bazaar sales, and hopefully it will be the only time, as we
work to increase our bazaar sales in the future. Luckily, the decrease is not expected to impact the 2020 retreat at this
time due to the cushion built in to it’s budget.
At 12/31/18 we had $5,650 in our checking account and $9,700 in savings which included $6,400 in the 2020 retreat
fund and $3,300 in the Excess Funds Account. Mindy has membership cards so stop by and pick them up.
Michelle McMicken made the motion to accept the Treasurer’s Reports for February and March; Caroline seconded. The
motion was approved.
Membership: Sally Wilson asked people to pay dues either in person or on the website. Membership cards are filled out
when requested.
Website: Louise Carriger announced that the website is up. If you need a password, Louise can set it up for you. At the
Education meeting in March there will be a demo of the full website.
Programs: Anna Bates will be the program for April. If there is anyone else that would like to sign up for Jackie Kunkel’s
class, let Marie know ASAP.
Education: Patty Gates announced that in March there will be a demo. Lavelle Wallace will be teaching the clam shell bag
after the meeting on March 24. Lavelle showed the various sizes of the clam bag. It was requested that you sign up for
the clam shell class today so they can make sure there are enough patterns, which are required to be purchased. At the
April Education meeting, Sue Humistan will do a lecture on reverse appliqué.
Sister Outdoor Quilt Show: Julia Jeans announced that the MMQ registration is in for the SOQS. You will need to reg-
ister your quilt individually. There is a $20 fee to register up to 10 quilts per person. Dawn Boyd is the new director of
the SOQS and is a quilter. SOQS is July 13.
Sunriver Quilt Show: Bonnie Schaefer announced that at the next meeting they will have the posters for people to dis-
tribute before the April Shop Hop.
Mountain Meadow Quilters – April, 2019 Page 8
Mountain Meadow Quilters Business Meeting Minutes—continued
Round Robin: Bonnie Schaefer announced that the round robin groups will be meeting after the meeting to exchange.
Bazaar: Robin Bracken asked if anyone is working with Jeri Banton on the bazaar. Dorothy Spain is in charge of work-
shops. Heidi Thaut is hosting workshops at her home. Phyllis Neumann demonstrated some ideas for bazaar items: adult
bibs, towel scarves and card holders.
Doll Quilt Challenge and Spools Challenge: Judy Johnson announced that several years ago we did the Doll Quilt Chal-
lenge and sold them for $25 each. We sold 43 of them. There is no definition of size. Use your leftover fabrics, blocks
and batting. American Girl dolls are still popular and are 18” tall. Judy passed out a handout with examples. Judy showed
many examples. Judy also talked about the Sunriver Books display for the month of August. The challenge is the Spools
Challenge. She passed around containers with spools of thread and, if interested, you are to pick one spool. The require-
ments are that you use the color of the thread to make a quilt. This color needs to be one of the following items: major
accent; one color in a two color quilt; the predominant color in a multi-color quilt; or it can be the sole color in a mono-
chromatic quilt. No quilt police, just your interpretation.
Service Quilts: Denise Meese announced that there were no deliveries of service quilts due to snow. At the last service
project workshop, 2 quilts were completed with 1 started.
Potholders: Dorothy Spain brought 46 potholder kits. Take them home, make them and bring them back.
Newsletter: Lavelle Wallace announced that she is switching back to [email protected] for newsletter submit-
tals. Deadline for articles is always the 25th of each month.
Appliqué Group: Bevalee Runner announced that the appliqué group meets next Tuesday at 9:30 am at her home. The Ap-
pliqué group has chosen the theme for our display at the Sunriver Quilt Show and everyone in the guild is invited to par-
ticipate. Hand appliqué only and the theme is “Sea Life”. Please let Bevalee know that you are participating.
Block of the Month: Nancy Fischer announced that she will be combining February and March and present both at the
March education meeting.
Quilt Books, Magazines and Patterns: Christine Watkins announced that she brings a box to each meeting for members
to drop off their gently used books, magazines and patterns to be sold at the Sunriver Quilt Show.
New Business: No new business
Old Business: Judy Johnson asked why our mission statement no longer contains the word “fellowship”. Pat Jones stated
that his would have been removed by our attorney due to becoming a non-profit status. It was asked that we confirm
that this was changed. Nancy Fischer will review the minutes from 2014 and report her findings to Robin Bracken, Mike
Carriger and Pat Jones.

MMQ Treasurer's Report 3/12/19
Good morning, quilters:
This has been another quiet month for MMQ finances,
largely due to our two cancelled meetings! Hopefully
we’re done with that for the year, and will be able to
enjoy the rest of our scheduled programs.
We’re still down about 20% for our 2019 membership,
so I need to remind everyone that dues are required
to be current in order to be eligible for our monthly
drawings. So if you haven’t paid your dues yet, be sure
to get me your check today before the drawings! Re-
member also, that as these raffles are not registered,
guests are not eligible to participate.
Various chairmen have asked that I make sure all ex-
pense reimbursement requests that I receive related
to their department are authorized by the chairman
before I pay them. There is already an approval line at
the bottom of the expense reimbursement form, so
you’ll need to have the chairman of the department
sign this before submitting the expense to me for re-
imbursement. This will help make sure the respective
chairmen actually have control over the expenses for
which they are responsible.
I am receiving payments at any time for tomorrow’s
workshop as well as our 2020 retreat. You can pay for
the retreat under your own schedule, but we ask that
if you make retreat payments online, they are for a
minimum amount of $25 due to the fees we are
charged to process the payment. I can take your per-
sonal check for any amount, or you can mail it to the
MMQ PO box.
Currently we have $6400 in our checking account and
$9300 in the savings account. Within the savings ac-
count, $6400 is designated for the 2020 retreat,
which includes $1350 of participant payments to date.
There is also $2900 in our designated Excess Funds
account within the savings account.
Respectfully submitted,
Mindy Wolfman, Treasurer

BJ’S QUILT BASKET
Hello, Quilters!
I hope all of you got through February’s snow (and snow and snow and snow!) with no damage. We didn’t, but things are
mostly fixed now and we’re looking forward to spring.
We have so many yummy new fabrics rolling in. Our newest favorite is Tula’s Pinkerville. Yum yum yum! I ordered the
whole line and it is flying out the door. We have sweet watercolor florals, a darling ocean-themed line (narwhals!), and of
course scrumptious batiks.
Patty will be back this summer with another great series of Lumberyard classes, including another retreat. Dig into your
scraps and sew! We still have space in some of our Festival classes, check our website for details. And remember Shop
Hop is coming up at the end of April!
If you haven’t subscribed to our email newsletter, do it! I send info about sales and classes (everyone loves a sale,
right?), and we will start sending birthday coupons soon.
Happy Stitching!
Kathy
STITCHIN’ POST
Hi Ladies,
*April is a really special month at The Stitchin¹ Post, because we celebrate Customer Appreciation Days, April
18-20. Annette, Val, and I have been busy planning the celebration for all of you special folks, with demonstra-
tions of new techniques and products that we have discovered and want to share with you. There will be
specials and refreshments going on throughout the three day celebration. Don¹t forget about our special
³Thread Talks² presentation with Jeanette DeNicolis Meyer at 6:30pm-8:30pm, Wednesday, April 17, 2019.
Then we have the Central Oregon Shop Hop, April 25-27, and we have made a very fun sample with the special
fabric.
*Workshops and classes are in full swing check the website for ideas of something that might interest you.
If you ever want to arrange for a private class with a group of friends, let us know and we will be happy to ar-
range it for you. Terri Hunter is our education coordinator.
*April is a huge month for us, with deliveries of new fabric, books, and notions as we begin to fill our shelves.
We are preparing kits and samples, gearing up for spring and summer. Now that our snow has disappeared
(thank goodness!), our tulips and daffodils will be blooming and we hope to see you in April.
