APRIL 2018
The Newsletter of Rotary District 7300 Including Allegheny, Beaver and Parts of Westmoreland Counties, Pennsylvania
Dear Rotary Friends:
This month, with spring in the air, it’s a good time to reflect on the plea from Rotary International President Ian H.S. Riseley:
PLEASE, plant one tree between now and July 1.
President Riseley quotes past U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, "There can be no Plan B, because there is no Planet B."
In Pittsburgh, the TreeVitalize program will plant a street tree in front of your house, and water it, mulch it, watch it, trim it and care for it. Contact [email protected] for more information (and free mulch!).
In Allegheny County, Tree Pittsburgh, [email protected], has teamed up with the Arbor Day Foundation and FedEx to replace 1,000 trees lost to the Emerald Ash Borer.
A few months ago, I planted two trees working with Tree Pittsburgh, and I plan to plant 8-12 more trees before July. The feeling of accomplishment when I packed down thesoil and mulch around those two trees I planted is priceless! Feeling the earth in myhands, and knowing I was doing something good for the planet was humbling.
Won’t you join me in “Rotary Making a Difference” by planting a tree in your community?
District Governor Ward Garner 2017-2018

Green Tree Rotary Delivers Easter Baskets to Shut-Ins
Green Tree Rotarians organized the preparation of 200“Easter Baskets for Shut-Ins” again this year. MaryMontz, wife of Rotarian Dave Montz, has orchestratedthis project for the club for several years.
On the Saturday before Palm Sunday, Rotarians andothers gathered at the Green Tree Borough Building tofill the baskets with cute little things like stuffed rabbitsand peeps, fresh fruits, puzzles, spring plants, candies, and personal care items. The baskets are then wrapped with cellophane and decorated with cheerful bows. WORLDWIDE POLIO PLUS UPDATE
By PDG Walt Sickles
There were only 37 new cases of Polio caused by the Wild Polio Virus in 2016. In 2017, there were only 21 new cases. So far in 2018, as of March 22 there have been 3 new cases. We really are “This Close” to total eradication; but we must, and are, continuing the fight to end this horrible disease.

Andy Dlinn A Super Involved Rotarian
by Karl Ohrman
You may know the Clint Eastwood movie, The Man with No Name. Andy "Hirsh" Dlinn has two names. He goes by Andy, or Hirsh, to his Rotary friends and to many others that he knows. Andy is President of Senior Wealth Management LLC an investment firm with offices in the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh. Andy has been a financial advisor and senior portfolio manager since 1993.
About his investment business, Andy says, "I ask my clients to allow me to be their guide as they strive to achieve their financial goals." His "Strategic Wealth Management" process was designed to help them face the financial challenges of educating children, reducing taxes, arranging a comfortable retirement and developing an estate plan that preserves what they have achieved for future generations.
Andy received his Certificate in Portfolio Strategies in 2002 and his Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation in 2005. He was awarded Five Star Wealth Manager for six consecutive years!
Andy is an active member of Pittsburgh Rotary. He joined in 1998 and served as club president in 2011- 2012 and then as Pittsburgh Rotary Foundation Board Chair in 2012-2013. Andy is now serving as Assistant Governor for District 7300, since 2016. He was named Paul Harris Fellow in 2010.
From 1974 to 1995 Andy served as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. In 1979, Commander Dlinn was designated special duty Public Affairs Officer in the US Naval Reserve and retired in 1995.
Andy is an accomplished musician. He plays everything from bongo drums to a full drum kit and also keyboard. He’s part of a group called Sea Breeze with Rotarians Barbara & Rick Johnson, specializing in oldies and more! He’s adapted some pop songs to a Rotary theme that the Pittsburgh club enjoys singing. His songs were so well accepted that a booklet of those songs was presented to the Rotary International President when he visited the Pittsburgh Rotary Club!

District 7300 J O B Board
Did you know we have a Job Board on the home page of the District 7300 website? This is a good place for Rotarians to post job openings in their companies, and for those who are seeking employment to post their resumes.
The Job Board is a relatively new feature on the website, but we look forward to new postings as they come in.
For job seekers, post your resume so potential employers have a resource for finding qualified employees with character. For Rotarians in business, post your job openings on the Job Board … and hire Rotarians!

Talk about our work with polio...and its impactWe've reduced polio cases around the world by 99.9% since 1988. Without our continuedsupport of this campaign, hundreds of thousands of children could be paralyzed. Together we:
Immunize 400 million children against polio every year. Improve the ability of surveillance and monitoring systems to diagnose new cases and
detect the wild poliovirus. Hire more than 150,000 health workers to go door to door to find every child.
Just one small contribution from donors in your district helps to improve children's lives aroundthe world.

Although it currently circulates in only a few countries, polio is highly infectious and spreads rapidly. The disease, which afflicts mainly children, is transmitted via contaminated water and food supplies.Five to 10 percent of cases are fatal. As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere are at risk. Only the global eradication of polio will ensure that no child ever againsuffers its devastating effects.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW• If polio is not eradicated, within 10 years, as
many as 200,000 children will be paralyzed by iteach year.
• In 2016, more than 450 million children werevaccinated multiple times using more than twobillion doses of oral polio vaccine. This will bedone every year until the world is certified poliofree. Rotary funds will help do this.
• To date, 122 countries have benefited fromPolioPlus grants.
• Since 1988, the number of polio endemiccountries declined from over 125 to three.
• At Rotary’s 2017 International Convention inAtlanta, global leaders pledged $1.2 billion to thefight to eradicate polio.
• This pledge included Rotary’s commitment toraise $50 million per year over the next threeyears as part of the End Polio Now: Countdownto History campaign.
• Under an expanded partnership with the Bill &Melinda Gates Foundation, every $1 Rotarycommits to polio eradication will be matched2-to-1 (up to $ 50 million per year).
On average,a child can be fullyprotected against polio for US$3.
Since 1998, Vitamin A supplements have been addedto polio immunization activities, helping to avert an estimated 1.5 million childhood deaths.
A study published in 2010 in the medical journal “Vaccine” estimates the economic benefit of polio eradication as US$40-50 billion.

What is circulating vaccine-derived virus? In populations with low-immunization coverage, it is possible for the weakened virus used in the oral vaccine to circulate in the environment long enough to undergo genetic changes that can cause paralysis. This is called vaccine derived poliovirus and is tracked separately than cases of wild poliovirus. When a population if fully immunized, they will be protected against both vaccine derived and wild polioviruses.

Inspiration Around Every Corner
‘It’s a small world, after all . . . ‘
“I have visited many Rotary clubs over the years, with
some incredible service opportunities and lots of great meetings, yet
nothing has compared to seeing 200 countries come together, as flags
were presented during the opening ceremony. From every corner of the
globe, the week included every language, religion, race and color.
We were all connected by the Rotary wheel.”

ROTARY DISTRICT 7300DISTRICT CONFERENCE
May 17-20, 2018
TO: District 7300 Presidents/Assistant Governors
RE: District Conference Ad Book
This year’s District Conference is slowly creeping up on us. It is scheduled for Seven Springs Mountain Resort on May 17-20, 2018. Plans are well underway and the registration form was posted in February.
As in the past, there will not be a registration fee so we are trying to cover some expenses by selling advertising in the program book. We are asking all clubs to consider a $100 full page ad in the book. We are also encouraging individual Rotarians and businesses to support the Conference by placing an ad in the program book.
In addition, we have decided to reinstate our “First Time Attendee” promotional campaign. Thisprogram will provide a “first time” Rotarian attendee staying overnight, one night, a $52.00 credit towards a Friday or Saturday night dinner. Ad sponsorships will also help to defer this cost.
Please send checks (payable to Rotary District 7300) and camera ready art work to:
