April 2019 Hayshire United Church of Christ
Good Friday - Easter Worship
Friday, April 19th - 6:30pm
On Good Friday, we will gather to remember the final days of Jesus and his
Disciples. We begin with a simple meal and communion around a community table.
Following the meal, we will journey to the sanctuary to hear the Good Friday
dramatization "When the Son's Light Failed." We will hear from selected women who
were greatly affected by Christ's presence in their lives.
Sunday, April, 21 - 6:30am - Springettsbury Township Park
An Easter Sunrise service is being planned this year.
Sunrise on Easter Sunday is at 6:51am. We will meet at
6:30am to greet the risen Son with scripture, song and
praise.
10:30am Traditional Easter Service we will gather for an
uplifting service of word and sacrament in our sanctuary
as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection.
A sign-up sheet for Good Friday is on the bulletin
board in the gathering area in order to plan for seating
and supper. Call Lisa Young - 717-870-7279 with any
questions.

April will be another busy month. We will talk
about April showers, insects, safety and plants.
The Pre-K classes will continue on their letters
and numbers. The 3 year old classes will also be
focusing on their numbers and reviewing colors
and shapes. The classes will be having their
Easter parties including an Easter Egg Hunt.
It is hard to believe we will have only one
month until graduation.
Registration continues to go well and we are
hoping to get more children registered for Summer
Fun.
We are ready to have sun and warmer
temperatures.

Pastoral Reflection
We are half-way through Lent and Easter is
fast approaching. Spring is finally making itself
known, as well, with signs of new life popping
up all over the place: The sun is getting
warmer, robins hopping in the yard and flowers
poking their fresh green heads up through the
ground... The earth is slowly reawakening and
stretching as new life flows back across the land
– renewing and rejuvenating each of us. It’s a
time of pausing to remember that life started in
a beautiful garden…
This is your garden, Creator God,
a thing of beauty
beyond understanding,
a poem that is being written
not in words
but in colors,
wind's whisper,
soaring bird,
snowdrop's petal,
gentle rain,
sunlight's warmth,
This is your garden, Creator God,
A thing of beauty
beyond our understanding
As we slide into the busyness of Spring and
all the things we can get done now that the
weather is warmer and the days are longer, be
sure to remember to pause and smell the
flowers, to feel the warmth of the sun on your
face, listen to the birds sing, and to pause and
remember that you are wonderfully and
beautifully made just like all of creation. This
spring, pause to think how you will bloom and
flourish where you are this year. In what new
ways is God calling you to a renewed and
reinvigorated life?
Blessing and Peace,
Pastor Brenda

Getting to know you….
Emmanuel UCC has been worshiping with
us for two months now and we are very glad to
have them here on Sunday mornings. Our
original sanctuary is filled once again with the
sounds of worship and praise.
You may have noticed that our upper lot
near the kitchen has been full on Sunday
mornings. Our Emmanuel friends are parking
there as it is the closest entrance to the red
doors that they are using to welcome their
congregation and visitors. Hayshire folks still
have use of both lots – it’s great to see the spots
filled once again.
As you come into the bigger lot, you may
notice the addition of a sandwich board sign
announcing Emmanuel UCC worshiping here
now and welcoming all to their worship service.
We have enjoyed various opportunities to get
to know our friends from Emmanuel as they
have joined us for our Ash Wednesday Service,
with Rev. Rick Pulling sharing in leading
worship. They joined us in welcoming and
hosting our sister churches for the first York
Association Mid-week Lenten Service of 2019 on
Wednesday, March 13th, and we look forward to
sharing breakfast with them on Easter morning
at 9am. It is a joy to have the opportunity to
better get to know our friends from Emmanuel
UCC. Please come out on Easter morning to
welcome them as we celebrate our Risen Lord
once again.
We are looking into purchasing another
shed to store the tables, donated by Faith
UCC, along with a new grill.
We are in the process of getting the floors
redone in the classrooms.
August 24th will be our 1st annual car
show.

From your President---
On March 14th, Vernon Baum, one of the
most respected and beloved individuals many of
us have ever known passed away. It is
comforting to know that Vernon and Phyllis had
so many wonderful years to share together. I am
blessed to have been able to spend valuable time
with both of them.
The combination of Vernon and Phyllis
played a major role in getting my spiritual
journey started. The respect and admiration I
had for the Baums helped me to decide that I
definitely wanted to be part of the Hayshire
family. l will forever be grateful to both of them.
Vernon lived a long and rewarding life. He
had a positive influence on so many people who
were fortunate enough to know him. Some of my
fondness memories of Vernon involved the
Sunday Morning Journey Class. When I first
attended the Journey Class, we had both
pastors and lay people leading the class. I
remember being asked if I wanted to help
facilitate the class. How could I possibly lead a
class with 3 or 4 pastors attending with my
limited biblical knowledge? Probably the biggest
reason I decided to help out was because I knew
Vernon would be sitting close by. If I was
struggling or needed someone to re-energize the
conversation, I could count on Vernon. He
always knew when to speak and his words of
wisdom were greatly appreciated by the entire
class.
I remember the second class that I was to
facilitate. It was a particularly difficult lesson
that I could not comprehend. I asked Vernon if
he would help me understand the lesson. I
ended up spending over two hours with Vernon
that afternoon with most of our discussion not
involving the lesson. I will always cherish the
time I spent with Vernon. He had a great sense
of humor and was quite knowledgeable on many
topics. With my apologies to Phyllis, had the
Washington Redskins ended up playing the
Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl, I would
have been a huge Redskins fan for that
particular game. I know how much Vernon
would have enjoyed watching his Redskins beat
Phyllis' beloved Steelers.
Another fond memory I had of Vernon
involved his sermons. Phyllis would be out in
Cleveland helping the National Conference and
Vernon would fill in. The next Sunday we would
be having lunch and Dick Lloyd would tell
Phyllis that Vernon's sermon lasted 22 minutes.
Phyllis would always comment that she told
Vernon to keep it short. We would all have a
good laugh. We knew Vernon's sermons were
going to exceed 20 minutes. I always enjoyed
listening to Vernon. I could see and feel his
passion. Plus, I knew what he was going to
preach was going to be worthwhile.
Another memory was the only time some of
us ever witnessed Vernon being visibly upset. It
was following a Wednesday night Lenten service
back in the days when the congregations would
worship at their respective churches while the
pastors rotated. The message provided that
night was inappropriate and Vernon showed his
displeasure. Vernon was always so careful with
his words, but that night Vernon couldn't hold
back his thoughts. To see Vernon so fired up
was quite unusual. He was always so mild
mannered. In over 10 years of knowing Vernon,
it was the only time I saw him upset. Truly
amazing.
We love you Vernon. You will be missed, but
never forgotten. Heaven got a great one.

Faith Climate Action Week
Why Faith and Climate
Change? All of the major faith
traditions emphasize stewardship of the earth and
all creation for current and future generations. A
unified voice of communities of faith responding
with moral clarity on the urgency of addressing
climate change can be a powerful advocacy group
for change.
Why Trees? Trees not only have symbolic
importance in many sacred texts but they have
numerous practical purposes, as well. We each
inhale 35 lbs.of oxygen daily, all from plants and
we require 7 trees to convert the carbon dioxide
we exhale into oxygen. Asthma and other chronic
respiratory ailments are devastating, especially to
children, in many urban areas. Trees in the US
alone remove hundreds of thousands of tons of
pollutions from the air. Trees save energy by
shading homes in the summer, releasing cooling
moisture into the air, and providing windbreaks in
the winter. They enhance water quality by
filtering and storing water because they act to
prevent excess storm runoff. Studies have shown
that planting trees increases property values,
improves recovery times for hospital patients,
encourages serenity and relaxation, reduces
violence, and increases pride in local communities.
Trees are critical in combating climate disruption
by removing carbon dioxide from the
air, storing carbon in the wood, and
releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.
“Do not damage the earth or the sea or the trees.” (Revelation 7:3)
Community Outreach
The Community Outreach committee of the
York Association has asked each of the 28 UCC
churches to contribute 1 reusable grocery store
bag filled with specific items to take to the York
Association Celebration banquet on April 28th.
They will then be presented to Mr Sandy’s
Helping Hands in May. Barb Crum will be posting
the items to be donated on the bulletin board in
the gathering area.
Thank you in advance for your help.
