Club Captain: Nigel Wagg
Hi All,We have had some really great weather for golf given the time of year; on the down side it is already making the course quite dry. This is starting to be a common theme for the last few years. We all need to be considerate to future generations and do what we can to prevent climate change. If we all do a small bit it adds up quickly, it can be a simple as not leaving the engine of your car running while waiting switching lights off when you leave a room, or fitting solar panels. These things will also save you money so it’s a no brainer!Another way we all need to be considerate on the course relates to pace of play; if you are losing ground on the group in front you should let those behind you through. I think that becomes more enjoyable for both groups as the slower group will not feel pushed from behind.Well done to the Barnard team for getting through the first round, and hopefully there will be good news from the Myhill and Cullington teams.
LadiesCaptain: Pat Blyth
Our course at Ryston Park has looked absolutely beautiful throughout April, with the trees in blossom and the grass growing back on the fairways after their winter rest. With the Masters on the telly, it was impossible not to feel inspired once again to get out there and try to play some golf!
Season 2019 started well for the Ladies Section when we managed to win our Diamond League match against Heacham Manor on their course, despite each of the three pairs giving away several shots. The actual result was one and a half matches each, with Ryston managing to win three more holes than Heacham – nerve-racking stuff, but good enough to get us into the next round, in which we play Hunstanton at home on 25th May. Please come and support us if you can.
We have also played two friendly matches, one against King’s Lynn at home which we lost 3 – 1, and the other against March away, in which we managed a very creditable half. Thank you to Dorothy for organising these games, and to everyone who played.
There have been two foursomes competitions; The Spring foursomes on 10th April was won by Tracy Russell and Marlene Simmonds, with Lady President Janet getting ‘Nearest the Pin’; and the Coronation Foursomes was won by Liz Forgan and Patsy Parker. Congratulations to these ladies and to Sue Ward, who has won the first trophy of the year, The Silver Cup.
We have completed a good month with a narrow victory over Dunston Hall in our first League match. Playing at home, we managed to win 4 –3. Onwards and upwards, ladies! Hope you are enjoying your golf, and looking forward to lots more in the months ahead.
SeniorsCaptain: Ian Buttle
The second Seniors Medal of the year was won by Mike Brown with a 71, followed by Barry Marks (74) Eric Savage (74) and Ian Palfrey (76).Friendly matches have resulted in two losses at Feltwell (6-0) and March (5 1/2 -1/2) and two home wins over Middleton (4-2) and Dereham (4-2). The month will finish with a first fixture with Girton.Roll ups continue to be very well attended and thanks go to Mike Brown for getting groups off quickly and efficiently.Among the significant Stableford scores were a 38 for Roger March and 40 points from Chris Taylor earning him a second El Bandito ball marker.Next month sees the annual SSAFA Qualifying Stableford on 2 May. By taking part we will be supporting a tri-service military charity that supports the Armed Forces Veterans and their Families. The winner and runner up in the competition will go on to play in the end of season tournament which sees all participating Norfolk clubs represented. Last season this was played at Bawburgh.

Paul Carrington1942-2019
Sad to hear that Paul passed away in hospital on 2nd April. For many years I worked with Paul at W.H. Johnson (Mann Egerton) in King’s Lynn where he worked in the cost office. When I moved to Downham in 1967 I met up with him again through the football club. Paul was a member for many years and usually played on a Sunday afternoon. He did a lot of work with the Cricket Club and was involved with the annual cricketer’s golf society played at Ryston Park. His cremation on 25th April was followed by a service at St Edmunds Church.
