(See Update below)

TAKING IT OUTDOORS (TIO) UPDATE

The response to Taking It Outdoors (TIO) has been tremendous. We’ve received over130 images of amazing art works. We have reviewed all of them and almost everyimage would make a wonderful banner to display in Point Richmond. We will create anddisplay a banner using at least one piece from each person who submitted work.

If we have enough banner sites, it is our intention to make and display morebanners. We wish we could be more precise at this time, but we won’t know how manybanners to make until we know how many places there are to hang them. Fortunately,we identified most of the sites before the Shelter in Place Order disrupted our efforts. We will provide more information as soon as we can get back on track. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this difficult time. Thank you so much for being wonderful artists and amazing supporters of AOPR andour community. The TIO Group

When did you first get interested in art? When I was a child my dad would take us to Chicago. We’d always go to the ArtInstitute, and he introduced me to the wonderful architecture in downtown Chicago. Istarted taking art classes in grade school. My fascination with photography began atabout age fifteen. I took photography classes in high school as an elective every year. Who were some of your influencers? In my high school photo class, the teacher (George Strimbu) introduced us to the great

master photographers, Weston, Ansel Adams, Stieglitz, Strand, Walker Evans, etc. Inthe photography department at the Illinois Institute of Technology, I met Aaron Siskind,Harry Callahan, and Chuck Swedlund. A big influencer was my photography professorHenry Holmes Smith at Indiana University. Other influencers: Josef Sudek, PaulCaponigro, Irving Penn, Michael Kenna, Eugene Atget and many more.

How does your working career and your art intersect?I trained as a professional photographer at an art school in Milwaukee, going on to get aBA and MFA in fine arts and photography at Indiana University with the idea of teachingat the college level. Instead, I went on to a career mostly in sales, usually photographyrelated, and continued with my own personal work. I had a very brief stint as anarchitectural photographer in Fresno and for the last 30 years I've been doing a greatdeal of photography with my work at Ifshin Violins in El Cerrito. I'm now working part-time and have been spending more and more time doing my own work.

What project are you working on these days?I'm doing still life using miniature figures on violins, toy cars (especially vintage DinkyToys), antique cameras and anything else. I've just started photographing vintage dollheads mostly from my sister's collection. I continue to photograph architecture. I've notdone much portraiture (never fully comfortable with it) so I decided I need push mycomfort level. For years, I've been working with the concept of motion, using longexposures so that moving objects blur but stationary objects remain sharp.

Tell us how you’ve used your interesting “mini-me” figure to create unusualphotographic tableaus?I've been working on still lifes with miniature figures for a while now and I wanted aminiature figure of myself. In Key West, Florida, I found a shop called "Mini Me" wherethey will create a miniature sculpture of yourself. I've included "mini me" in some still lifework and on our travels in front of important landmarks. It's a work in progress.
