PDC COMBATS COVID-19

Every avenue of the pharmacy profession has been called on to help support COVID-19 efforts - Phi Delta Chi is no different.

The Great Lakes Depths wants to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our member chapters for the work they have done these past few months with helping combat against the pandemic. A few of the highlights are depicted below.

ALPHA - UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Alpha Brothers are helping to combat COVID-19 by getting vaccinated themselves as well as giving vaccinations to others! Several Alpha Brothers are administering COVID-19 vaccinations as a part of IPPE and APPE rotations as well as at internships. When asked about their experience, Brothers explained how it feels to be able to take part in such an important effort to end the COVID-19 pandemic. P2 Brother Jeremiah Jean described his experience giving vaccines at Meijer clinics as “a really rewarding and fun experience. It shows me that pharmacy really is a diverse profession and we have a lot to offer when it comes to stopping the spread!” Another P2 Brother, Ashley Berry, was able to administer a vaccine dose to her great grandmother while vaccinating patients at work. Ashley described feeling “honored to not only know my great grandmother was being vaccinated but that I was able to be the one to vaccinate her! It is awesome to be able to vaccinate my community in hopes for a safer tomorrow.” Paige Stratton, also a P2 Brother of Alpha Chapter, explained that “knowing every vaccine I give is another step towards ending this pandemic has provided me with a hopeful, uplifting learning experience. I am extremely grateful to be a part of this medical community that is saving lives and reuniting friends and family!” We are so proud of our Brothers participating in COVID-19 vaccination efforts!

The Great Lakes Depths wants to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our member chapters for the work they have done these past few months with helping combat against the pandemic. A few highlights are depicted below.

ALPHA UPSILON - OHIO NORTHERN

The Brothers of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Chi are helping to combat COVID-19 in various ways. Many are getting vaccinated as well as encouraging others to get vaccinated. Some examples of this include posting educational information about the vaccine on social media or writing letters to newspapers with information about COVID-19. A few Brothers have also been involved in the process of administering COVID-19 tests at their work environments. At Ohio Northern University, the junior pharmacy students get trained on vaccine administrations in their spring semester. Because the junior students are the oldest in the Alpha Upsilon Chapter, they have not been trained yet. However, they will be trained and ready to vaccinate the community in a few weeks! After training, they will be able to administer vaccines at their work sites or on their IPPE rotations this upcoming summer.

XI - THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

On top of being vaccinated themselves, Xi Brothers are giving immunizations for IPPEs, APPEs, and workplaces as well as volunteering at some of Ohio’s biggest vaccination clinics. We also do our part as informed members of the community by wearing masks and following all guidelines, and clarifying myths from fact on social media. IPPE immunization locations include chain pharmacies throughout the Columbus area as well as the OSU Wexner Medical Center set up at the Schottenstein Center. Meanwhile, APPEs have enabled Brothers to assist vaccination in more rural areas such as Mansfield and Athens, OH. On IPPE rotation, Brother Alex Shuey helped to make information sheets about how the vaccines work, side effects, and why people should get vaccinated. Brother Lindsey Mueller wrote COVID-19 immunization protocol for Lower Lights Christian Health Center while on APPEs and worked to develop immunization protocols for her employer, Crosby’s Drugs. Ensuring proper education of the populace on vaccination is one way that Xi Chapter is determined to be leaders in pharmacy and aid in the eradication of this disease.

TAU - PURDUE UNIVERSITY

Brothers of Tau have been doing everything they can to contribute toward the COVID-19 vaccination effort by both receiving the vaccine when given the opportunity and administering it in various clinics and rotations. Brothers have been both volunteering and working in vaccination clinics on their IPPE and APPE rotations, as well as at their prospective jobs. Many Brothers have been acting as immunizers, while others have helped in positions needed to be filled such as preparing the vaccines and helping with intake of patients. Brothers have also been a part of testing efforts to protect the local community. Purdue University has established a strategy to combat COVID-19 called Protect Purdue. Many Brothers have participated in these efforts of contact tracing, surveillance testing, and overall support of activities that protect the local community and help stop the spread of COVID-19. Tau is ever grateful for the opportunity to be a part of efforts to protect communities from the spread of COVID-19!

BETA GAMMA - DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY

A number of Brothers are helping administer COVID-19 vaccines to the community through volunteer opportunities, at work, and on their APPE rotations. Many of Beta Gamma’s Brothers are part of the “School of Pharmacy Pandemic Immunization Response” Blackboard site where the school of pharmacy posts any upcoming immunization events. Additionally, many Brothers have begun administering vaccines at work as the vaccines begin to be delivered to more pharmacies. Finally, Brothers on their APPE rotations are seeing more opportunity to serve the public and administer COVID-19 vaccines. Brothers have traveled to different local nursing homes, fire stations, etc. to help with the COVID-19 vaccine clinics. While many of the Brothers of Beta Gamma are certified to administer vaccines, many are not and have still assisted with check-ins and other needed tasks at the clinics. Beta Gamma continues to look forward to helping with upcoming vaccine clinics and is honored to serve the public in the fight against COVID-19.

GAMMA PHI -

UNIVERSITY OF

FINDLAY

This year, due to COVID-19, everyone is working their hardest to give vaccinations. Not only are the Brothers on APPEs giving the vaccines, but so are the other Brothers during IPPEs and at places they work. As a Chapter, we have given over 500 vaccines so far this year.

BROTHERS OF THE MONTH

GREAT LAKES DEPTHS

Provided by the Regional Director for Communications

ALPHA – UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Brother of the Month: Avery Oberfeld (P1)

For the month of March, Alpha Chapter has selected Avery Oberfeld as Brother of the Month. Avery is a P1 Brother

initiated into Alpha Chapter this past fall. Avery served on her candidate class fundraising committee and currently serves

as a Ner Brother Liaison to the fundraising committee. Avery was nominated for organizing a fun day for her and her

friends. With restrictions on in-person classes and student organization events due to COVID-19, Avery went out of her

way to find a way to help build connections with other Brothers! Avery made sure everyone was comfortable and

helped everyone get to know each other more. Avery is always so welcoming and willing to have a conversation with

anyone! We are so excited to have her as a part of Alpha Chapter and can’t wait to see her grow as a Brother!

MU – UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

Brother of the Month: Jim Matis (P3)

This month, Mu Chapter would like to recognize P3 Brother Jim Matis, our Worthy Correspondent. Jim has done some outstanding work for our Chapter in the past month through leading zoom events, setting up

Brotherhood activities following COVID-19 safety guidelines, and writing up monthly reports to showcase what Mu has achieved. Last month, Jim

lead a Zoom inhaler training event, held by our Student College of Clinical Pharmacy organization, to help teach proper inhaler use and appropriate

counseling points for all types of inhalers. He was also able to organize our event TopGolf with Mu, where he organized a night that our Brothers could take a break from studying and homework and go golfing instead. Of course, we made sure to follow all the necessary precautions to make it as COVID-19-safe as possible. We appreciate everything that Jim does

for our chapter and his go-getter attitude to plan events for us!

Brother of the Month: Emily Schultheis (PP2)

The Brothers of Tau have chosen Emily Schultheis to be the Brother of the Month for the month of March. Emily is a

Senior in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Loogootee, IN, and she is currently serving the Chapter as the Chair of the

Philanthropy Committee. Emily was nominated for all of the amazing work she has done with her committee this year. Most recently, she planned an event to give back to local

health care workers by arranging baskets full of treats to say thank you for all of they have done over the past year. Emily

worked extremely hard to plan and facilitate this event to show appreciation for the countless hours put in during these

COVID-19 times. This year has been especially tough, with many restrictions in the community and on campus prohibiting

normal activities, but Emily has done an outstanding job at serving her Brothers and community where she can. Tau is so thankful for Emily’s encouragement and support at all times. Thank you so much, Emily, for always helping your Brothers

and the chapter in any way you can!

Brother of the Month: Sydney Stevens (PP3)

Xi Chapter’s Brother of the Month for March is Sydney Stevens. Sydney is a 3rd year in the BSPS Program (Bachelor of Science in

Pharmaceutical Studies) and was recently initiated as a Brother last month in February. Even before officially gaining the title as Brother,

Sydney demonstrated leadership and initiative, taking charge of planning one of the candidate events and getting to know Brothers despite the distant feeling that online recruitment and education creates. Since then, she has been involved in the going ons of the Chapter, currently running for a position on the Worthy Board and

heading Xi Chapter’s new challenge coin sale. Xi Chapter is very grateful to have her as our new Brother!

Brothers of the Month: Sia Vassos (P1)

This month, the Alpha Phi Chapter would like to recognize Sia Vassos as our Brother of the Month. Sia is a hardworking P1 student, as well as one of the co-chairs of our school visits committee. According to one Brother in the chapter, “Sia is always someone to call on when I need

help in a class. She explains everything and gets me right back on track, not to mention she is a great friend who always has my back in

everything.” Along with her co-chair Claire Athanas, Sia has worked to put on events highlighting medication safety (medicine vs. candy) for

elementary schools in the Indianapolis area, as well as participating in a virtual career day for students of all ages to highlight our profession.

Thank you, Sia, for all the hard work you do for our Chapter and within our Indianapolis community.

BETA GAMMA – DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY

Brother of the Month: Eric Yestramski (P2)

For March, Beta Gamma’s Brother of the Month is Brother Eric Yestramski! Eric is a second year PY2 pharmacy student who has been a Brother of Phi Delta Chi since Spring of 2019. He has really stepped up during this challenging pandemic year to do everything he can for

Phi Delta Chi. He will be our Worthy Correspondent (WC) for next year and we can’t to see what he will be able to do. When he isn’t studying

in the library, you can probably find him at the weight room in the Power Center. Congratulations, Eric!

Brother of the Month: George Nikolovski (P2)

This month we are recognizing P2 Brother George Nikolovski “FTB”. He is being recognized for his commitment to our

Fraternity. When class is not in session, George spends his time as an intern at Danwin’s Pharmacy or he is out delivering pizzas for a local pizza restaurant. Despite his busy schedule,

he is able to join our meetings and be an outstanding Brother!

Brother of the Month: Bianca Pham (P2)

Our Brother of the Month is Bianca Pham. Bianca is a P2 student from Ontario, Canada. She is a pharmacy intern at Tops Pharmacy and just got inducted into Rho Chi Honor Society. Bianca is known

for being kind, loving, and having an easy going personality. Bianca is heavily invested in the Phi Delta Chi Gamma Pi Chapter and shows

the most AAAE. Whether in the pharmacy school or outside of school, she brings out the good in everyone. Being in the second year of pharmacy school can be very stressful but she is always thoughtful towards her Brothers. As bold as Bianca can be, the

sweeter she becomes. Bianca is loved by all of the PDC Gamma Pi Chapter Brothers and everyone else due to her great

communication skills. Gamma Pi Chapter is proud to announce her as the Brother of the Month and having her part of the Chapter.

GAMMA PI – D’YOUVILLE COLLEGE

ALPHA UPSILON – OHIO NORTHERN

Brother of the Month: Emily Bui (P2)

The Brother of the Month for the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Chi is Jaelyn Prater, a second year pharmacy student from Toledo,

OH! Jaelyn is the current Worthy Correspondent and was nominated by her Chapter because of all the hard work that she has put into the

academic reports each month. She is always full of energy and has many ideas of how to improve the Chapter. An example of this is

when she helped organize a buddy chapter meeting that we had last month with Alpha Sigma, which is the Chapter at the University of

Illinois. Jaelyn brings her energy to many of the Brotherhood events and never fails to lift the Brothers’ spirits. She is very passionate

about both Phi Delta Chi and pharmacy, and Alpha Upsilon is very grateful to have her as a member!

Ron Ward Jr. Travel Award

Ron Ward Jr. was a recipient of the 2017 Selfless Servant Award at the 71st Grand Council and has served the fraternity for many years. We honor his hard work and dedication with a Travel Award. You can earn points by traveling and hosting other Chapters. The purpose of this program is to promote camaraderie and brotherhood within our region.

NEWS: the Great Lakes Regional Officers have elected to suspend this program for the 2020-2021 academic year. Given the context of the 2020 calendar year related to COVID-19 in accordance with travel and contact restrictions likely stemming into 2021, the Great Lakes Regional Officer team ultimately felt it would be irresponsible and inappropriate to hold the Ron Ward Jr. Travel Award program for this year. While we still want every Brother in our region to spend time with one another, continue to drive and develop relations with one another, and overall promote the sentiments of brotherhood, we also want to be sensitive to local, regional, and national travel restrictions. This program will tentatively resume for the 2021-2022 academic year, pending pandemic progress.
