Eastertime or Eastertide, lasts for fifty days. Easter Sunday is to the year what Sunday is to the week. We live as if God’s Kingdom has already come - because it has. We put aside our
fasting for feasting and celebration. We bless ourselves with baptismal water to remind us of
our share in Jesus’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. “Alleluia” is our song because we are
delighted to praise the Lord. The stories we read from Scripture are of Thomas’s and Mary
Magdalene’s encounters with the Risen Lord, of meals with Jesus, of the Good Shepherd, and
of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Our Lady of Lourdes would like to wish everyone a Happy and Blessed Easter!

Holy days of obligation are days of the year when Catholics must attend Mass in addition to
the normal Sunday Mass. The United States has six holy days of obligation:
December 8th: The Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
December 25th: Christmas, the Nativity of Our Lord.
January 1st: The Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God
Thursday, May 29th
: 40 days after Easter Sunday, Ascension Thursday
Friday, August 15th: the Assumption of Mary into Heaven
Saturday, November 1st, 2014: All Saint’s Day
January 1st, August 15th
, November 1st and December 8th are Holy Days of Obligation except
when they fall on a Saturday or a Monday. Then they are ABROGATED, which means they
are a holy day but there is no obligation to go to Mass.
In the United States, Christmas Day, December 25th is always a holy day of obligation, even
when it falls on Saturday or Monday, and the Immaculate Conception, December 8, is always
a Holy Day except when it falls on a Sunday. The reason is that Christmas and Easter are the
highest-ranking holy days, and the Immaculate Conception is the patronal feast for the United
States.
Holy days are like Sundays in that Catholics must attend Mass, and if possible, refrain from
unnecessary servile work. Some Catholic countries, such as Italy, Spain and Ireland, give
legal holiday status to some of these holy days, so people can attend Mass and be with family
instead of at work. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation.
The obligation to go to Mass depends on the Country that you find yourself in at the time. For
example, if you are in Italy on March 19th, it is a Holy Day for you or if you are in the United
States on March 19th, St. Joseph Day is not a Holy Day of obligation to go to Mass.
THE NEXT HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION IS: Thursday, May 29th
