April 21, 2019 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Dear Friends, Happy Easter! If you are a visitor to Our Lady of the Woods, we want to welcome you and if you are returning after a long absence or are looking for a spiritual home, we want to welcome you, as well.
I am old enough to remember the 1960’s when televisions consisted of tubes. Because of this, there were occasions when a picture might begin to roll and then the screen flickered a bit. To handle this, often one on the techniques was to give it a bang on the side. Surprisingly, this “jump start” often worked. Today we do a similar thing with computers when we are having problems. We do not physically bang them. We turn them off and then “reboot”. This often fixes the problem. I think the same principal applies to holidays and holy days. If we celebrate them correctly, they can truly be an opportunity to reboot our families, our faith, and ourselves. If not, then they become just another day that is a bit out of the ordinary. My friends, Easter is the opportunity to start again and to look at the world with new eyes and a fresh perspective. The story of Christ’s resurrection is not just a story of history or theology. It is meant to become your story and my story. This was true from the very beginning. The disciples followed Jesus for a period of between one and three years. Certainly many of them knew him years before that. They saw him as a wisdom person, a healer, and a probable Messiah. Yet they did not fully get it. If they had, they would have stayed awake in the Garden of Gethsemane and they would have stood at the foot of the cross. They would not have cowered in the upper room in fear but would have waited in expectation. Yet that is not what they did. It was only through an encounter with the Risen Lord that their faith was “rebooted” or “jump-started”. What a reboot it was! They encountered him with the enthusiasm that first led them to leave fishing boat and tax post. Jesus was not just resuscitated, he was resurrected and so were they! I write this to speak to everyone for whom their faith has become simply a habit or to those for whom Easter is a day before the problems come back. I am writing for those who are struggling with faith. Seek to know the Risen Christ. Seek him in the sacraments. Know his teachings from scripture. Reboot and recharge. This is what Easter invites us to do. It is what he invites you to do as well. In Christ,
Father Mike
