This advisory is being shared in the interest of students’ personal safety Community Immunization Clinics York Region Public Health is offering evening and weekend immunization clinics in convenient locations for students that need to catch up on their vaccinations. If you recently received a letter from York Region Public Health requesting immunization information, the community clinics are a great way for your child to get immunized. Clinics are offered in Keswick, Markham, Newmarket, Richmond Hill and Vaughan. To book an appointment, visit york.ca/immunizations and click on Community Immunization Clinics. Acceleration Courses (for those who wish to take a new course or upgrade a previous mark) will run from July 4 to July 29, 2016. YRDSB students must register online using Career Cruising by going into their own course planner and clicking on the Con Ed tab. Registration is open now! Dress Code As the warm weather has finally arrived we are all happy to shed the winter layers! We want to take this opportunity to remind all students to dress appropriately for school. Details are in the student handbook Community Involvement Hours: In order to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, all students are required to complete 40 hours of Community Involvement. Information regarding some Community Involvement opportunities is available in the Guidance Office. Community Involvement tracking forms are available in the Guidance Office. Students are reminded to complete the “Notification Section” and hand it in for approval before starting the activity. Completed Community Involvement forms are to be returned to the Guidance Office. Please be advised that the completed forms are processed periodically, and therefore the hours submitted to the office may not appear the following week. Attendance Reminder Please call the school to let us know if your child is or will be absent, whether it is for the entire day or for part of the school day. Please continue to keep our telephone number handy, (905)326-7994 ext 101. You may call 24 hours/day or email us at [email protected] If a student has to leave during the day, he/she is required to sign out at the attendance office. For safety reasons, students who are signed out must leave the building as they will not be directly supervised. Punctuality is an important social norm to ensure the success of group processes. It is also a demonstration of respect for self and others. We continue to experience a significant number of students arriving late for school. We look to parents for your ongoing help to make sure that students arrive to school and their classes on time daily. Community and Cultural Connections:

Seneca College is offering Summer Job Workshops for students at the Seneca Employment Centre in Newmarket. Students can get help with Job search and interview skills, as well as with their resume and cover letter. See the flyer on the Newsletters page.

Tommy Douglas SS is hosting “Engage in Change”, an information fair that will showcase Community Partners with opportunities for students to complete their Community Involvement Hours. The fair will take place at TDSS on Thursday, April 27th at 6:00 – 8:00 pm. All students from all local schools are welcome. Maple HS presents “Parents as Partners” on Monday, May 2, 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Maple HS. Michelle Cassidy, the YRDSB Mental Health Lead will speak about “Putting the Health in Mental Health”. Parents will learn about stress and anxiety in children and youth, and explore how to improve and promote mental health. RSVP by April 25th to: [email protected]. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority Summer Program York Region high school students can join the 2016 Conservation Youth Corps (CYC) for Toronto and Region Conservation this July. CYC is an opportunity for high school students to engage in environmental stewardship activities and earn up to 35 community involvement hours towards graduation. The program runs for two weeks in July (July 4-8 & July 11-15) and is open to current York Region high school students who are returning to high school in the fall of 2016. Benefits of CYC: Students learn to address environmental challenges; Volunteers spend the entire week immersed in nature; Allows students to make positive contributions to the environment Past volunteer activities include: Invasive species removal; Native wildflower and tree plantings; Restoration of streams and green-spaces. Volunteers will be picked up at a designated pick up location at 8:00 AM and dropped off at the same location for 3:00 PM from Monday to Friday. York Small Business Summer opportunities Last summer, the York Small Business Enterprise Centre had 15 students successfully complete the program, generating a combined revenue of more than $90,000. A variety of businesses were opened including swim schools, dog walking, escape room, tennis school and stationery items imported from Japan. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience. Be Cyber-Smart!: Do you have children/teens that use social media/internet to interact with their peers? Come and join the conversation and learn about safety tips, strategies to teach your child, online harm reduction, view and discuss personal experiences of people who have been through online bullying, and to review how to monitor your child’s online interactions. This workshop is for parents/caregivers of children/youth who participate in online activities.

Parenting Your Anxious Child (Part 1): What does childhood anxiety look like and sound like? Come and learn about the cycle of anxiety along with the signs and symptoms of children/youth that may be anxious. There are things you can do and things you perhaps shouldn’t do. This workshop is geared towards parents and caregivers of kids of all ages.

Parenting Your Anxious Child (Part 2): Does your child experience anxiety? Now what? In this session you will learn helpful strategies that parents can use to support children through anxiety by understanding (CBT) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach, exposure therapy and the four traits of anxiety. This workshop is geared to parents and caregivers of kids of all ages.

A Solution Focused Approach to Parenting: You’re already doing things well as a parent! Need help to recognize this? This interactive strength-based workshop will give you the tools and attitudes for successful parenting! Discover the many things that you are already doing well by learning to bring the small successes into your awareness. This will improve your life and those of your children with having more confidence and opportunities for success. Participants will learn ‘the power of the compliment’, recognizing individual strengths, noticing your success as a parent, and looking at solutions rather than problems.

Mindfulness & Self-Care: Looking for self-care ideas? Managing self-care in a very busy world can seem like ‘just another task!’ What if learning simple yet effective mindfulness practices within your day was possible? Come and join the conversation and learn simple yet useful mindfulness strategies that can help you with your self-care practice! In recent decades, researchers have been learning that Mindfulness helps us live healthier lives. In this workshop you will learn practical exercises, what Mindfulness is, and how it can help us with depression, anxiety, anger, chronic pain, low self-esteem, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other emotional difficulties. This workshop is geared towards adults and teens 16+.

Parenting & the Adolescent Brain: This workshop will focus on taking a look at NEW research in the area of neuroscience surrounding the brain development in adolescents. Come and find out how to parent your teen with an insight into the distinct developmental period that comes with the unique challenges of parenting adolescents.

safeTALK Training: safeTalk is a training that prepares you to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. Most people with thoughts of suicide invite help to stay safe. Alert helpers know how to use these opportunities to support that desire for safety. As a safeTALK-trained suicide alert helper, you will be better able to: move beyond common tendencies to miss, dismiss or avoid suicide; identify people who have thoughts of suicide; apply the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen and KeepSafe) to connect a person with suicide thoughts to suicide first aid, and intervention caregivers. Powerful video clips illustrate both non-alert and alert responses. Discussion and practice help stimulate learning; Learning steps that contribute to saving lives. This workshop is three hours in length.

Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) & Funding Support/Resources [A Kerry’s Place Group Learning Session (GLS)]: This is a two part workshop. The first part is for individuals, families, and support people who are seeking an overview of the way Autism Spectrum Disorder can affect a person’s life within the topics of sensory processing, anxiety, communication, social skills and behaviour. The second part of this workshop will be a presentation suitable for individuals or families seeking more information on funding sources available for people with ASD. Topics will include government funding, tax credits, and private charities.

b) Complete each of the three Registration Steps

Step 2: Confirmation Email

A registration confirmation email will be automatically forwarded to you. Click on the link provided inside the email to confirm your email and School Cash Online account. The confirmation link will open the School Cash Online site prompting you to sign into your account. Use your email address and password just created with your account.

Step 3: Find Student NOTE: A STUDENT NUMBER IS REQUIRED This step will connect your children to your account.

a) Enter the School Board Name b) Enter the School Name c) Enter Your Child’s Student # and Last Name d) Select Continue e) On the next page confirm that you are related to the child, check in the

Agree box and select Continue f) Your child has been added to your account

Step 4: View Items or Add Another Student

If you have more children, select “Add Another Student” option and repeat the steps above. 5 children can be added to one parent account. If you do not wish to add additional children, select “View Items For Students” option. A listing of available items for purchase will be displayed.

After logging in and adding an item to the cart, proceed to the payment option screen by clicking on “Checkout” at the top of the page.

On the Select Payment Method page, select Interac Online as the payment method, and click on “Continue”

You will be taken to the Interac Online page, where you can see the financial institutions that supports Interac Online. Please select your financial institution and sign in using your personal banking credentials.

You will see an invoice for your purchase, where you can then select an account from which to pay. Accept the payment to continue.

You will be taken back to th School Cash Online purchase summary page. Here, click on “Complete your order” to complete the transaction and pay for your item. Otherwise, the transaction will not be completed and the payment will be returned to your account.

Once you have successfully completed your order, you will be taken to the receipt page where you can print your receipt.
