Counseling Center Offers Free Therapy

for Trauma Linked to Bombings The violence may have taken place in Boston but many

people throughout our nation have been affected by

the explosions that blasted through a crowd near the

iconic Boston Marathonrsquos finish line Monday The (newly

named) Lighthouse Psychological Services (LPS) at First

United Methodist Church ndashChula Vista is reaching out to

area people overcome by the tragedy to provide them

with free therapy

Dr Melinda Stenberg Director of the Chula Vista site of

LPS has received training in disaster and trauma

counseling and is available to meet with South Bay

residents experiencing anxiety or other mental health

symptoms as a result of the tragedy in Boston

Dr Stenberg said people in need of aid could be

individuals who have been directly affected by the

tragedy as well as people who saw the tragedy unfold

on the news Stenberg said getting therapy now reduces

the chances of developing post traumatic stress disorder

or having to cope with acute stress long term

ldquoPeople who get help within the first three months can

alleviate the symptoms of acute stressrdquo said Amy Khan

co-coordinator of the Western Massachusetts Trauma

Recovery Network

Khan said some of the signs that someone may need to

see a therapist to overcome emotions rattled by the

Boston Marathon explosions include difficulty sleeping

excessive worry intrusive thoughts being quick to startle

and higher-than-normal levels of irritability and anger

If someone is having difficulty dealing with grief or stress

caused by the disaster and wants to do some ldquoself-

carerdquo Khan suggests ldquotrying to have a routine or living a

normal liferdquo That means eating well staying away from

stressful situations and exercising

ldquoAfter a trauma the body is so agitated a good vigorous

walk is very helpfulrdquo she said

The counseling center is offering up to three free sessions

of counseling These sessions will focus on dealing with

feelings that have welled up following the tragedy

To make an appointment with Dr Stenberg please call

(619) 318-8175 (Melinda Stenberg PsyD is a pre-licensed

therapist Her work is currently being supervised by a

licensed therapist)

The Childrenrsquos Moment Childrenrsquos Ministry hosted a successful Easter Eggtravaganza

on Saturday March 30th for more than 100 children from

the congregation and the community We also had some

families from Hazel Cook Elementary School in our church It

is a blessing Seeing the fruits of our hard work taking place

in events like this The bunnies were hopping and the eggs

were colorful The children went on an egg-searching frenzy

during the egg hunt We describe this event as ldquosuccessfulrdquo

since no one was seriously injured and we managed to give

away 50+ pounds of chocolate ldquoThank yourdquo to the

congregation for donating candy and plastic eggs And we

send a note of gratitude to the staff and volunteers who

worked SO hard to make this a fun safe spiritually-nurturing

event

Planning continues for Vacation Bible School (VBS) and Spanish VBS VBS week kicks off with an Ice Cream Social at

6 pm Monday June 10th in the Fellowship Hall So plan to come out to register your children (or grandchildren)

and share a cool sweet treat with us VBS begins the next morning Classes will be held 9 am ndash noon June 11-14

(Tuesday to Friday) Spanish VBS is 9 am - noon for 5 days (July 15-19) These events attracted over 160 kids last

year and led several families to join our church

Childrenrsquos Ministry is committed to our most precious disciples ndash our kids

New Pastoral Internndash Darin Arntson Darin was born and raised in San Diego

California As a pastorrsquos kid she spent much

of her young life at church learning to love

the extended family found in a community of

faith As a teen Darin eagerly invested her

time (outside of volleyball water polo and

show choir) in youth group Nurtured and

encouraged in leadership by counselors and

staff she continued to serve after graduation

as a paid youth worker throughout the San Diego District

UMC

Darin is now finishing her second year of seminary at Candler

in Atlanta Georgia and is a certified candidate for

ordination as an elder in the Cal-Pac Annual Conference

She feels called to encourage Christian spiritual formation

through creating intentional and sensitive spaces for

worship as well as developing relational outreach and

missions that foster the building of community both within

and beyond the walls of the church She is greatly looking

forward to offering her gifts and time to the already

flourishing ministries of FUMC CV this summer and to growing

in service through practical experience in these areas with

the guidance of strong pastoral and staff leadership She is

grateful for the opportunity to return home again this

summer and to share in the kingdom work and family of

faith in Chula Vista
