She also owns Ragtime Stables a horse boarding and training farm. She is also a rescue specialist with RCM SAR, a volunteer marine rescue organization. She has purchased a System K4 machine for the dry cleaning business. This environmentally friendly method is the latest technology for the dry cleaning industry. This was to provide a cleaner, greener alternative. The new solvent developed in Germany, has no halogens, is non toxic, and biodegradable. This machine is one of only a few in BC and Angela has switched of her own accord refl ecting her desire to help improve the quality of the environment and provide a clean alternative for the staff and the public.

Aaron Vissia Financial Centre has grown to accommodate a talented team of fi nancial profession-als. Starting in his home in 1996, Aaron Vissia now leads a team of 5 professionals at his recently expanded offi ces on Johnston Road. Aaron and his team offer fi nancial counseling, tax services, investment services, life, disability and critical illness insurance, employee benefi ts, bookkeeping, and mortgage services. A lot to house under one roof, Aaron tripled his 1,000 sq ft offi ce year by purchasing the building next door and extensively renovating it to add two new offi ces, a conference room and a large meeting room with kitchen and washroom facilities. Aaron designed and did a lot of the work himself, incorporating local woods and a style that compliments the atmosphere in the centre. But building relationships is the key to success for the centre. Now that he has grown his square footage, Aaron wants to continue to grow the buiness by adding new personnel and expanding the slate of services offered.

The Blue Marlin Inn, purchased by Melody and Richard Magaton in 2012, is a family run community minded business. Using the rich history of the hotel we stride to become a must stop location for out of town travellers as well as a proud point of interest for our local population. Future plans include a remodeled brew house/lounge as well as incorporating local excursions (fi shing trips, guided hikes, etc.) to our hotel guests with the hopes of making Port Alberni an adventures vacation destination.

SteamPunk Café & Coffee House opened August 2012. Owners Kevin Wright and Lesley O’Neill wanted to give the city of Port Alberni a great place for people to come and meet for a fantastic cup of coffee as well as something homemade to eat. We have a large following of clientele who come to us every day just to experience what we have to offer. The addition of our deck has been something that gets people talking and helps to add to the new image of Uptown.

Where do I start? It gives me great pleasure to have Simone as an important member of our team. Simone has a contagious smile. Her co workers can’t help but smile when she walks into the room. Her sense of humour, her kindness, her eager spirit and generosity are qualities she brings to her workplace every day. I can’t say enough about Simone. I adore her and feel privileged and honoured to call her my friend and my favorite co worker.

Spirit of MusicThe Alberni Valley is blessed with many who have made Music their lives. Our nomi-nees are people or groups of people who create music entertainment so that the rest of us can enjoy our lives just a bit more.

KENN & LINDAWHITEMAN

Rob Armich is one of those musicians that always presents a positive attitude and a willingness to share his music. Currently Rob is off to Portugal and Spain on a musical adventure with Kevin Falkenberg, another rising star on the music scene. Thirty-fi ve years ago Barry Miller loaned Rob a beat up old trumpet. Ever since Rob has been giving back to others. His natural ability with children led him to a career in childcare at Stepping Stones Daycare. Rob has been a member of a number of bands including: The Maloomba Boggie Band, Tat and the Sly Dawgs, Lazy Mike and the Rockin’ Recliners as well as the Bare Foot Blues Band. As well as being a guitar player and singer he’s also written more than 40 songs. In the initial stages of Chars Landing Rob was there helping to make things happen. In a nutshell Rob Armich is a talented guy with music in his blood searching for opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others as a musician and volunteer.

Lance Lapointe began his career at a young age, sleeping in a bass drum while his parents Len and Marilyn belted out songs by Patsy Cline, Anne Murray, Buck Owens, Willie Nelson and the Beatles. He learned to play guitar in the backroom of his dad’s business, Value Vacuum. Lance credits Sarah Falls and Barry Miller for igniting a spark in him in Grade 7 and 8 which still glows. Like any aspiring musician Lance has had challenges; the passing of his dad Len, getting air time as an independent artist, late nights and being away from his wife and children. But with the support of his family he has maintained his focus, his spirituality, his zest for life and his willingness to share his music with others. His work at Teachable Moments Services has sparked an interest in developing a studio for young people to record their music. This coming summer as a member of the band Dark Horse they will be opening for Keith Urban at Sunfest in Duncan.

Dan has always called the Alberni Valley home even though as a young man he travelled exten-sively throughout Europe and the Middle East. He’s worked on the Autobahn in Germany, studied in Tibet, logged in the Queen Charlottes, worked on a seiner from Prince Rupert to Comox, and construction in Vancouver. Dan’s life experiences have honed him to be the musician he is today. Dan has perfected his musical craft with through his involvement with bands like Rhythm Method, Nite Shift and Celtic group Moh Masala. He has shared his talent at the World Craft Fair, Echo and Fir Park Village, Heritage Place and Qualicum Gardens and more. You’ll often see him at summer jams at Harbour Quay with Highway Four. His advice to budding musicians is to be open to all kinds of music. His manta is “Om namah shivaya”: I bow to the lord within. Dan believes there are no mistakes. Everything that has happened has led to now. A good place to be.

Jim’s Clothes Closet opened in 1968.  In 1983, Don Ferster took ownership and Jim’s is now the leading men’s fashion store in three island communities. In 1993, the second location opened in Courtenay within the eclectic boutique atmosphere of downtown 5th St. In 2003 Ferster hired Drew Bradley as a part time sales associate and he is now general manager.  Jim’s opened the ur-ban inspired Campbell River location in 2013. While all three stores refl ect each community, Ferster and Bradley grew the stores’ success with uncompromising dedication to customer service, quality product, innovative fashion choices, and custom options. True to Jim’s motto “Denim to Suits for the Quality Man,” they have built a full concept boutique outfi tting men from Carhartt work wear, to Buffalo Jeans, and custom suits.  To achieve this, Ferster and Bradley build each store’s exclusive inventory by personally selecting items from Canadian and European inspired fashion houses.

Walk the Coast opened its doors in 2005. Dr. Manson wanted his patients to have access to “good” footwear locally. Walk the Coast has since blossomed into a destination shoe store for locals and people who come to visit Port Alberni. In 2014, Walk the Coast became Omni channel and opened their online store, where customers from all over the world can shop our great “little shoe store”. They have delivered shoes as far away as Australia, Dallas Texas and Quebec. The store continues to explore the online potential while staying true to its roots right here in Port Alberni.

Tourism & Hospitality AwardA local business that services the public through food/beverage, accommodations or other tourism related activities. They have an active online presence through social networks such as Trip Advisor and they typically score very high in virtually all assessments.

An innovative partnership between Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce & Hupacasath First Nation,  this event is an initiative that builds social capital in the community and supports local economic development, all in a fun, relaxed, waterfront sunset atmosphere. The Victoria Quay location is a desirable venue that attracts residents, visitors and people travelling through en-route to other destinations such as Tofi no and Ucluelet on the West Coast and Parksville & Qualicum on the East Coast. The vendors vary from artisans, crafters, jewelers, non-profi ts and general retailers are set up along the boardwalk with the entertainment settled in front of the Nuu-chah-nulth Welcoming Figures providing for wonderful views from all areas. As the name implies all visitors to the event are bound to enjoy magical sun sets over the Somass River and during low tides the added value of wildlife, including bears, is quite possible for additional enjoyment.

Youth of the Year AwardA local resident who today at the ripe old age of under 19 is already becoming a com-munity leader. The award winner is known in many circles and has already created a resume that includes employment, volunteerism, passion for hobbies and has demon-strated long term goals known to many.

My name is Caleb Savard. I was born in Ontario. I moved here from Peterborough Ontario. I am in grade eleven. I am now seventeen years old. I love playing sports like hockey, soccer, rugby. I excel at English and sciences. I am currently in the French Immersion program. I have been volunteering and working at the Morris Family Farm for the last year and a half. There we have been exploring and working with organically raised animals and vegetation. We incorporate the organic vegeta-bles, herbs and livestock for our family business. I also volunteer my time with the youth soccer team.

I have lived in Port Alberni for about seven years. I was fi rst involved with the community through sports, playing hockey and golf. Now I offi ciate minor hockey and have reached the level of junior hockey outside of Port Alberni. I took the Justice Institute Emergency Medical Responder course at age 16 and became a licensed EMR. I became a fi rst aid volunteer at local ball, soccer, wrestling, basketball, and rugby tournaments, and other community events. I am involved with the Alberni Valley Search and Rescue. To practice my skills and learn new ones I am a Junior Firefi ghter in Cherry Creek. At the high school I was previously in the leadership class and a lead organizer of the ADSS pancake breakfast which donated $1400 to Kidsport. I assist in the teaching of life saving skills to students who are interested in the health care fi eld in a school-based trail EMR class. I have worked at Quality Foods for two years. I plan on becoming a primary care paramedic.

DREAM BIG. WORK HARD. For as long as he can remember, Daniel Tsai has wanted to be a fashion designer. Growing up with 9 siblings, he learned to work hard and quickly, because homework and chores always come fi rst, before sewing projects.Last fall, the sixteen-year old opened his own tailor shop (“TAILOR ME”) on Argyle Street. The busy shop now generates a small monthly income: 5% is donated back to the ADSS Textile Program; the rest is saved as tuition for fashion school. The Grade 11 student maintains an “A” average in his studies, which he does between shop hours. On weekends, this fun-loving youth helps organize “Harbourside Swing”, a local social dance event for fellow students.

The Starboard Grill 2-5440 ARGYLE STREET (HARBOUR QUAY) • 778-421-2826 • WWW.STARBOARDGRILL .COM

We appreciate Port Alberni supporting our business since we opened in October 2012. We couldn’t have done it without you. Brad DeClercq is grateful to live his dream every day. We are fortunate to have an amazing location at the Harbour Quay, wonderful staff and the best customers. Brad loves to cook and create and always looks forward to new ideas and dishes. We love Port Alberni and are proud to call it home. THANK YOU FOR YOUR NOMINATION.

Rising Star AwardA new kid in town, a business known but somewhere before their fi fth anniversary. They are leaders, they get customer service and their growth is obvious to all.

Darren was born in England and grew up in Sydney, Australia. He made his way to Canada in his late teens, and eventually began working in the restaurant industry while raising his two children. His love and knowledge of food was established here in Port Alberni where he started out as a dishwasher and worked his way up to head chef.Laura worked in numerous restaurants in Port Alberni until a certain Cafe brought the two of them together in the spring of 2010 Darren and Laura were married and two families were united. They both dreamed of owning their very own restaurant and creating an Australian atmosphere rich with art and culture. So they decided to bring Port Alberni a little taste of “Down Under” and a little piece of paradise that Darren now calls home.

When we moved to Port Alberni it didn’t take long for us to take notice of the Harbour Quay and the potential the location had for Brad’s fi rst restaurant. After a lot of hard work, the help of Community Futures, Brad’s family and some luck we were granted the opportunity to take over the space at the Quay.A lot of work went into renovations, improvements and preparations. After a lot of challenges and creative planning the Starboard Grill opened for business on October 12, 2012. It is a labour of love and comes with stress, excitement, daily challenges and the reward and pride of ownership. We are grateful to our staff and suppliers and most of all the people of Port Alberni who make it possible for us to open our doors every day.

Opened in May of 2010 Van Isle Ford Sales has gone from having 14 full time employees to more than 23. In four years Van Isle Ford saw its business grow well over 300%. In February of 2014, Van Isle Ford was recognized by the Ford Motor Company as one of only 36 Ford franchises in Canada to win the 2013 ‘Diamond Club Presidents Award’. It is the highest award a Ford dealership can receive. In summer 2014 a new facility opened on Beaver Creek Road giving expanded capacity in service ability and enhancing the consumer experience.“Opening Van Isle Ford was a dream come true,” says dealer principle Will Pulford. “So many peo-ple dream of one day ‘Living the dream’ or winning the lottery. This community has given me that opportunity- it is something I truly cherish and enjoy each and every day.”

Volunteer of the Year AwardA resident of the Valley this person’s name is known by many. They may be involved in many organizations or simply super involved in one. They roll up their sleeves for the betterment of Port Alberni and they absolutely love doing what they do.

My name is Bill Surry, I have been volunteering for over 35 years starting out with youth bowling & Special Olympics. l help in the summer, winter and Senior Games. ln 2008-2009 I was host for team Ontario at the under L7 tournament. I have volunteered as an Ambassador in the grove in previous years and very year I volunteer for multiple events such as Thunder in the Valley (1.5 yrs) which is an all year process. Salmon Festival judging karaoke (20 yrs), ln the last 4-5 years helping out at the Fall Fair. I look after the Alberni Athletic Hall doing bookings and keeping the hall in ship shape (5 yrs.) l work as usher/security for the Bulldogs & director on the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society. I also help with a few different car events throughout the year volunteering my 1940 Pontiac Arrow car in multiple events. Volunteering for my community is my passion. I love and enjoy doing what I can to help out and will continue to volunteer for as long as I am able to.

I choose to volunteer because I like Port Alberni and I would rather contribute to making the town a better place rather than simply complaining about things. I volunteer with the Industrial Heritage Society. I fi nd the history of Vancouver Island and our Valley interesting and I like to share that with local folk and with visitors who are curious to learn about our community. I am a Conductor on the steam train as, without volunteers, it cannot run. I volunteer with the H.J. Logging crew, putting on old-time logging demonstrations at McLean Mill, to give another ‘heritage experience’ to the visitors. If we want visitors to stop in our town, we have to give them a reason. In my small way, I try to contribute to tourism through the I.H.S.I volunteer with the local and Regional Heri-tage Fair because of my love of history. I want children to have the opportunity and incentive to explore their heritage through this great program.

I was born and raised in the Valley at Sproat Lake. I was always involved in anything to do with water; swimming, fi shing, water skiing, etc. and the promotion or benefi t of the Valley: the place with the best all around water resources and recreation, anywhere. I was part of Salmon Festival and Sproat Lake Watersports from their inception in the early 70’s. I served with Regional District, Sport Fish Institute, Sport Fish Advisory Board and other water resource boards in the 80’s and 90’s. School Board trustee in the 90’s and more local focused boards and committees ever since; Chamber, West Coast Aquatic, local PSF and DU, Junior Hockey Society, etc.I am mostly an idea person. Some wild and off the wall, some practical and productive. Some fl oat, some sink but I never stop throwing ideas out there and getting behind good ones, whoever initiates them. My hope is that my children, their children and everyone can enjoy this Valley and it’s natural and enhanced environment forever, as I have.

Customer Service AwardAwarded to an individual who may own or simply work at a local business. This person wears their badge proudly. He/she knows how to greet a customer and through their actions they create repeat business simply by demonstrating respect and courtesy in the marketplace.

Pacifi c Rim Veterinary Hospital Port Alberni opened in February 2008. It all started with Dr. Patty and Dr. Holly having lunch one day and tossing around a few ideas. It didn’t take long for one particular idea to take on a life of it’s own; before the two of them could blink they were partners in business and construction had started. At times things moved too quickly, and at other times things seemed to stand still. However, time does not stand still. Before the paint had dried (almost literally) the hospital was open and they hit the ground running. The staff that has come together is a gentle mix of old friends and new faces that provides an excellent balance and an exceptional work atmosphere. Both Dr. Patty and Dr. Holly share similar philosophies in striving to provide high quality medicine in a comfortable and accessible hospital setting. It is important to the doctors that the staff enjoy and are proud of what they do.

Quality Foods has been operating in Port Alberni for more than 18 years. At that time Gord had already been working in the Qualicum location for 2 years being groomed by owner John Briuolo. He learned from an early age that Quality Foods was built on customer service, hard work and community involvement. Gord brought these core values to the Port Alberni Quality Foods location after taking on the role of store manager in May of 2011. Three years later he continues to preach the same philosophy to the 60 staff members, many of whom have worked at the store since its opening. Gord can be found spending most of his time on the fl oor where he can assist the customers and much more time helping out in the community.

Citizen of the YearAwarded to a local person whose name is recognized in many circles through their business and/or personal contributions.

Dewayne has always been a strong community supporter and volunteer. Since coming to Port Alberni in 1989 he has been involved Scouts Canada as a leader and trainer, Chamber of Commerce as President, Director and Ambassador, the 2004 BC Winter Games Society as President, Alberni Valley United Church as Treasurer, Board member and choir member, Rotary Club as President and Treasurer, Port Alberni Home Support Society as a Treasurer, Alberni Valley Bulldogs as Volunteer, Portal Players Dramatic Society as Sound Technician, and Alberni Geocaching Group. He believes that the backbone of our community is its volunteers and actively promotes our community.

We’ve often heard it said that when it appears that nothing can be done, give Patty Edwards a call. She is a driven woman when it comes to advocacy and helping people to a better place in their lives. Her speciality is working with individuals with mental and physical challenges in areas such as poverty law, income assistance, Canada pension, tenancy issues and disability benefi ts. Patty believes her role is to facilitate change through consensus. Her vision for Port Alberni is a healthy community where all citizens have opportunities to thrive and reach their full potential. Highlights for Patty since moving to Port Alberni in 1981 include lobbying to build the new hospital, sitting on the ACRD for fi fteen years; chair of the Alberni Valley Community Stakeholders Initiative to End Homelessness since 2007 and raising two children to be well adjusted and caring in nature. Patty chooses to be open to change and to challenge herself to look at new solutions.

It would be interesting to know the true impact Theresa has had on the Alberni Valley and the world over the years as she has given so much of her time to others both here and abroad. Leading up to her Masters of Arts Degree in Leadership and Training in 1999 Theresa spent countless hours developing and supporting youth programs in the Valley like including Youth Commons, YOUTHINK, Youth Matters and more. In 2008 Theresa found herself in China working on a migrant labour rights project and discovering the Chinese culture. It was at that time that she came into contact with IDEAS, (a youth rights organization) which continues to draw her back to China. Is it any wonder she was featured as a role model in the Rick Hansen Institute’s Role Model Project and has become the Director of Corporate Services for the City of Port Alberni. Her advice for others is to step up, get involved and stay engaged!
