From the President……..

Hi Everyone— It’s April—it is hard to tell because I’m looking out my window

at a hail and sleet storm while I’m typing this—brrrrr! Surely, those shivering little

flowers will win out and the sun will start to shine soon! I mean! This is getting de-

pressing—and Anne Knapp has been planning Plein Air schedules for painting out-

doors—we just need a little light! A little sun! A little warmth! Soon! Okay—I

know ranting about the weather doesn’t really change it, but I do feel a little better

now—must be the hot air I generated.

Well— moving right along - I hope you are planning to enter a painting in the Members’ Art

Show during the Summer Art Festival weekend! Get something ready! If you haven’t screened for

Members’ Shows yet, you will have an opportunity at the June meeting—you can find all the details

online. We have lots of new PAL Members and don’t want anyone to miss out on this big opportu-

nity. The wonderful people at Key Bank are planning to have our show reception as usual on Satur-

day, July 18th—which we really appreciate. If you haven’t been to that event, mark your calendars

now!

See page 4 for information about the upcoming Open Juried Exhibition—yes, we used to

call that show the Open Regional Show, or The Regional Show, or the Open Show or—confusing,

huh? It is now officially the Open Juried Exhibition and the prospectus is online!

The Summer Art Festival plans are moving right along—I know the festival organizers, Carol

Valstyn and Virginia Alvarez , will be calling for volunteers soon, so please be ready to help them out

as needed. The Festival is the weekend of July 18 & 19 . The screening for arts and crafts vendors

was April 4th and was very successful and plans are in motion! Thanks to all the people who helped

with the screening!

Thanks to Aiden Fogarty and George Hineman for doing the audit on our books this year.

Every year, someone with bookkeeping knowledge and math capabilities volunteers to look over the

records for us. Jon Lonning does a great job as Treasurer and we rely on him to keep it all straight,

but our by-laws require an audit and suggestions if changes are needed.

I think most of our PAL Board Members plan on staying in place for next year but we need a

replacement for Charli Meacham as co-chair of Programs . Charli is just traveling too much next

year—she has so much fun scheduled with her fiddle playing friends, that she won’t be in Gig Harbor

much. She and Carol Lemon have worked well together to bring us programs each month and Carol

needs a new helper—is it you? I will be leaving my position as President—it is fun being President,

but I’ve had my turn—twice, actually, and it’s time for someone else to take it over—

See you at the meeting on April 23rd—Myrna

MESSAGE OF APPRECIATION FROM DONNA TRENT AND JANE WALLIS

Many thanks to the Peninsula Art League for their support over the years for our workshops. With your support we have been very successful. We want to especially give thanks to those PAL members who have attended our workshops: Patty Nettles, Louise Weldon (twice), Pat Meras, Anne and Bob Knapp, Mimi Van Ballenburghe, Arlene Towne, Mary Anne Powell, Myrna Binion (her daughter and her sister), Mary Stroing and Joan Teed. A quote from Mary Stroing echoes what others have said, "I had a wonderful experience in Tuscany. Brief instructions, handouts, and then a fun 4 to 5 hours of painting at different locations, every day! And the 5 course dinners! Praises to the instructors."

Earth Day at the Zoo Come celebrate Earth Day at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. PAL member Robin Pe-

terson will be there helping to start you and the kids off with a sketching project. It's the perfect

antidote to NDD, nature deficit disorder, and a terrific way to welcome spring. No adult or child

should be left inside this time of year so come on out and draw a lemur, siamang or musk ox.

It's a special event on Saturday, April 18th from 10am to 4pm at the Point Defiance Zoo in

Tacoma. http://www.pdza.org

Drawing You In—Moves to Thursdays!

The Drawing You In group will begin meeting on July 9th on Thursdays from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. We will con-clude on September 24th. Art Walk in Gig Harbor is moving to Thursdays also and Drawing You In will be a part of that event. We are looking forward to more summer drawing time. By the way, if anyone has an old card table they no longer use, it would be helpful to keep on site for the Drawing You In sessions. We need it for sign up sheets and the like. I could also use a couple volunteers to assist if I am ill or out of town during any of the aforementioned time. Thanks much, Sheila Anderson [email protected]

The Buds & Blooms Spring Garden Festival is looking for artists to show and sell their art work at no commission. Buds & Blooms, in its 2nd year, features a grand tour of Federal Way’s re-nowned gardens, celebrated Farmer’s Market and urban wetland and wildlife refuge. The festi-val features presentations by gardening celebrities, workshops, live music, art exhibits, food booths and children’s activities. Last year we counted more than 2,400 attendees and expect more this year.

We invite artists to come paint plein air in the gardens while making their work available for sale. The festival will not be charging any commissions or booth fee as long as groups of 10 or more artists attend and are willing to paint for 1.5 hours each day of the weekend. This is an unique opptorunities to expose their work and style to a large group of appreciative market. Attached please find information regarding the schedule for the weekend and registration and sign up

sheet. Please contact me with any questions- Lillian Yeh, Economic Development Assistant, 253-835-2501, fax 253-835-2509

The PAL wall at TCC has been patched, painted and rehung. Looks great. Thank you Janine for the paint, Wini Trippel and Mitzi Ritting for patch and hanging. A BIG thank you to Brian Bell our 1st class painter, you did a great job. The Bi-Monthly Shows groups hangs art at TCC—Call Judy Schiner or Chris Cotton for info! Thanks, Judy Schiner

As of this Sunday, I will now have paintings at the Ebb Tide Gallery in Gig Harbor. It is a co-op gallery--all the artists are members of an association and are "partners". I have wanted to be part of a co-op gallery for a very long time, and I am very happy to now be in a very special, artsy place. The gallery is right up the street from Harborview Dr., in Neptune Court. Since I will be working there, you can come to visit: Thursday, April 9 and 30; and Monday April 13 and 20, from 1--5 pm. Or you can come any other time the gallery is open--10--5pm every day but Tuesday. Sherri Bails

North for the Summer—Robin Peterson Robin Peterson has been chosen by Gates of the Arctic National Park in northern Alaska as one

of their Artists in Residence for 2009. In August she will travel to Fairbanks and then Coldfoot, AK to

join another artist (from New Jersey) and a park ranger for two weeks in the wild. A bush plane will

drop them off near the headwaters of the Noatak River in the Schwatka Mountains of the Brooks

Range well north of the arctic circle. They will spend about 2 weeks camping, hiking and floating the

river. Best of all, they will have the increasingly rare opportunity to experience true wilderness with

all the wonders and challenges it has to offer. Robin is looking forward to sharing this adventure when

she returns in early September.

Art Festival Poster Contest by Anne Knapp

We had a nice group of Posters done by art students at both Peninsula High School and Gig Harbor High School, but had no entries from Henderson Bay this year. The PAL board chose the best six posters based on graphic impact, composition, and appropriate theme. The top six were displayed at the Meeting and the members voted to select the poster for 2009 Gig Harbor Summer Arts Festival. The winners are:

1st Place- Andrea Fernandez Gonzalez- Peninsula High School $100 Award- this will be on Posters and T-shirts for our Summer Arts Festival.

2nd Place- Ted Kence- Peninsula High School- $50 Award

3rd Place- Ariella George- Peninsula High School- $25 Award

The winning Teacher is Christine Burris who will receive a $100 Award also.

The students and the teacher, as well as the Gateway, will be invited to our meeting on April 23rd to receive their awards. Charlee Glock-Jackson and Carol Valstyn are working to take jpegs of the win-ning poster and to develop the poster and advertising for the Festival.

PAL Plein Air Painting 2009—from Anne Knapp

Thanks to all who signed up to join the PAL Plein Air Painting group this year. In order to accommodate the largest percentage of members, we will paint on Friday mornings this year. Anyone who wishes to join and receive notices about plein air painting events and opportunities, please send your email address to [email protected] and watch for upcoming schedules in future PAL newsletters. I am working on a location near the Harbor where plein air works could be shown, and possibly included in the Art Walk Please let me know if you have any ideas or contacts. If we are able to add this advantage to our group, everyone should think in terms of painting a standard size, and ease of quick framing. I can see this being a fun feature for our community in a downtown Realty Office or restaurant!

The majority of our painting opportunities will come from June 5th thru September 4th. I will be adding a few early ―plein air escapes‖ where we will carpool and leave the area. In April, I want to go up to Skagit Valley for the Tulip Festival, this may not be on a Friday- it will be subject to our very fickle weather and the blooms of the tulips. This will probably be mid to late in the month, as the cool weather has delayed the blooms. I will try to give as much notice as possible. If you do not wish to paint- that is fine- it is a great opportunity to take photos for future works and to observe and be with other artists. I would like to have lunch at the Food Coop in Mount Vernon, noted for their affordable, healthy and delicious lunch counter.

In May, we have 2 opportunities. I have just received notice of a plein air ―Garden Tour‖ event in Federal Way on Saturday, May 9th (more information to come, email Anne if you are free/interested) and I want to take a group to paint at Scenic Beach State Park. It is in the Seabeck area west of Silverdale on Hood Canal, and has a lovely view of hanging valleys across the water with the Olympics so close you can almost touch them! This has been a good year for snow, so they should look great- we just need to hold out for clear skies! This will be another ―last minute‖ email notice as the weather is critical. It is not worth going if it’s so foggy or cloudy that you can’t see the mountains, or so cold & breezy that you can’t paint!

Our opening event for our Gig Harbor area will be to paint at the end of the Harbor adjacent to the new His-torical Museum on Friday June 5th. The goal is to set up by our special PAL Painting Sale venue in the former ―Ship to Shore‖ store, and help draw attention to the event. We should plan to paint there longer, so bring a lunch, bring cards to hand out, and if you’re participating in the Sale event- by all means help set up the Sale first! There are lots of good vistas to paint at that location- it will be a really fun start! Watch for a complete painting schedule in the May newsletter! Start packing- let’s go painting!

Pal Board Minutes—March 24, 2009, 10:00 a.m., Uddenberg Building, Gig Harbor, WA. Present at meeting:

Myrna Binion, Cec Anderson, Rhene Johns, Christy Camerer, Russ Camerer, George Milliken, Harry

Sundberg, Virginia Alvarez, Judy Schiner, Judy Buskirk, Chris Cotton, Sherry Weitzel and Anne Knapp

March Minutes (see newsletter)

Myrna Binion reported that Aiden Fogarty and George Hineman did our annual audit of the Treasurer’s

books and found them to be in good condition.

Anne Knapp presented Art Festival Posters from the local high schools and 6 were chosen as good prospects

for graphic and artistic choices to present to the general membership at the coming meeting.

Judy Buskirk visited the Board Meeting to suggest a PAL presentation of an Artist Trust Workshop in Gig

Harbor. There was discussion about the costs, venue and interest. George Milliken made a motion that PAL

send Judy to a workshop to learn more about it and that PAL will pay the fee of $50 for her attendance. It was

passed. Judy will report back to the board at a future date. Judy will coordinate any workshop prospects with

Mimi VanBallenberghe in her role as Workshop Chair.

Judy Schiner and Chris Cotton also visited the Board to report on the ongoing process of hanging Bi-Monthly

art shows at TCC. They have recently worked with volunteers to paint the walls at TCC to make them more

presentable and feel the show now has a better appearance. There was discussion regarding the need to pre-

sent our membership in the best possible way to the community. Art hung should be of good quality. The on-

going problem of people forgetting to pick up their work on the designated dates will be addressed by Judy

and Chris. If paintings are left more than 2 months, they can be donated elsewhere. A contract will be pre-

sented to artists who hang in the show to clarify expectations. The work must be in a medium screened by

PAL. There was discussion about painting tags—Christy Camerer offered to assist with making new tags.

George Milliken has been looking at the possibility of PAL having a ―Show‖ or ―Sale‖ at the old Ship to Shore/

Kayak sight in Gig Harbor. There was discussion of possibilities of building use and cost. George, Christy

and Rhene will look into the details and discuss the building use with the realtor. If not rented, the building

might be available for our use during the Maritime Gig Festival in June.

It was decided to show Donna Trent monetary appreciation for the use of her art studio for workshops. A

$100.00 amount will be presented to her at the meeting.

Rhene Johns discussed PAL Show venues in Gig Harbor. TCC, the Library, Kimball and Key Bank are the

only current sites. The Boys and Girls Club will open in the Fall and the Museum may be available in the fu-

ture.

Virginia Alvarez reported the Festival has gained vendors and the screening is proceeding according to plan.

Carol Valstyn’s health has improved and she is doing well. She has taken in $1440.00 in screening fees and

the Festival Screening will take place on April 4, 2009. We will not print the map and insert in the Gateway

this year because of increased costs.

Cec Anderson reported the Prospectus is ready for the Regional Show. There were questions regarding ship-

ping of paintings.

Officers are needed to fill the positions of President and Program Co-chair for next year.

Minutes presented by Anne Knapp due to absence of Mary McInnis, Secretary

Sent by Anne Knapp—The "US Open Plein Air Competition" is held on Whidbey Island, usu-ally the 2nd week of September. It is a fundraising event for Coupeville Arts Center. Anyone can come and take part- there is a fee, you bring any canvas or board you intend to paint on and it gets stamped on the back- their goal is to have everyone painting something "fresh" for the event- I think you have up to 5 days. You frame your favorite pieces (up to 4). The artist sets the price they need/want to get for their art work- allowing for a percent that goes to the Art Center, plus you should al-low for the $50 coupon that they give to all the people who pay to attend the event. You bring your framed pieces to the barn Sat morning- and they will decide it it's good enough for the show- (and where you're positioned in the show- the further back you are in the barn- the better the juror per-ceives your piece- my observation).

At 11 am you come back and take home any work that was not accepted. Then at 5pm you come to the gala- wine and hor d'ouevres served to artists and patrons by restaurants and caterers from the area. They have an infor-mal announcer who explains the silent bidding process and encourages bids and announces when sections are closing.

They set up a sheet for each artwork with title/artist- a mi-numum bid (the reserve price set by the artist) then set in-crements ($25) per line, so people can competatively bid- so you might get a higher price. There's a "buy now" high-est price- so IF someone really wants it- they can cut to the chase and just buy it outright. They give out ribbons for top pieces- and have a whole list of "best painting of..." catagories.

The arts center helps artists find cheaper spots to stay if you contact them I've stayed with other artists at the old fire hall. Very basic- but Kitchen helped keep food costs down. It's fun getting to know other artists, & it has been a pretty good show to sell from.

The Arts Center makes money from the entry fee, the patrons who come to the gala pay $50 to attend- then they get a $50 off coupon if they buy a piece of art (which encourages them to buy), most of the food wine is pro-vided by local businesses, I don't know if they pay to rent the barn or that is donated (it is owned by neighbor to Art Center director)- they do own the exhibit panels, and I think they only give out ribbons- no cash prizes, so costs are minimum, then they make a percent off any sales the night of the event and the next day (when art exhibit is open to the public). Pretty clever all in all and I think we need to do it down here in Gig Harbor and partner up with Gig Harbor City Marketing folks!!!
