1PM-2PM You Were Expecting Viral Conjunctivitis/ Johnson/62864-ASThis course reviews basic morphological and functional characteristics of viruses with specifi c emphasis on the adenovirus and its role in eye disease. Current diagnostic and therapeutic treatment approaches are examined. Novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are presented to enhance the clinician’s ability to diagnose and treat adenoviral conjunctivitis.

2PM-3PM The ABCs of Omega-3s for Dry Eye and More/ Johnson/62944-PHThis course reviews the biochemistry of omega-3 fatty acids, examines various supplements on the market, and discusses their role in the treatment of dry eye and other diseases in optometric practice.

3PM-4PM OCT Angiography/Johnson/62866-PDNew technology is transforming the way we see the vessels of the retina and choroid. This course reviews the anatomy of the retinal vasculature, introduces OCT angiography, and presents cases to aid providers in the application of the technology to patient care.

4PM-5PM Judicious Prescribing of Dangerous and Controlled Substances/Johnson/63043-PHThis course give providers an overview of narcotic pain killers used in optometric practice, examines indications and contraindication for their use, and discusses federal and state laws regulating the prescription of dangerous and controlled substances. Sunday, April 267AM Registration and Breakfast 8AM-10AM Contemporary Management of Open Angle Glaucoma/Marrelli/66779-GLThis 2-hour course will present what’s new in the diagnosis and management of open angle glaucoma. Topics in the diagnosis side include IOP monitoring outside of offi ce hours corneal hysteresis macular imaging with OCT 10-2 visual fi eld testing in early glaucoma new visual fi eld strategies. For management update, topics include new medications and how to implement them into the current drug regimen drug delivery devices laser trabeculoplasty and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery MIGS.

10AM-12PM Maximizing the OCT in Glaucoma/Marrelli/64369-GLThis 2 hour course covers retinal nerve fi ber layer, optic disc, and macular thickness OCT scanning utilized in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. A systematic strategy for interpretation is provided, and common pitfalls such as artifacts are reviewed. Progression detection using progression software is presented. Numerous case examples are utilized to show the clinical relevance of this technology.

2020 Spring Congress SpeakersDr. Jeff ry Gerson graduated from Indiana University school of Optometry in 1997, after which he went on to do a VA residency concentrating in low vision and ocular disease. He has been in several diff erent practice settings, including a retina referral practice where he participated in several large clinical trials. Currently, Dr Gerson is in private practice that is a collaboration of both OD’s and MD’s. He see’s primary care patients, and has an emphasis on retinal care in his practice. He enjoys having 4th year optometry interns with him and the challenges that they present. He still participates in clinical trials and utilizes many diff erent diagnostic modalities. Dr. Gerson is a frequent lecturer in the US and abroad, and writes regularly for optometric publications. When not at work, he enjoys travelling, working out and spending time with his family.

Dr. Spencer Johnson received a B.S. in Neuroscience from Brigham Young University, and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He is currently an associate professor at the Oklahoma College of Optometry where he teaches courses in neuroscience, healthcare systems, and epidemiology. Dr. Johnson is a principal investigator in the NIH funded RAPID study to evaluate the effi cacy of povidone iodine in the treatment of viral conjunctivitis. He has lectured at national, regional, and state association meetings throughout the United States and Canada. Prior to his career in academia, Dr. Johnson worked in the refractive surgery industry, and owned a private practice.

Dr. Danica Marrelli received her doctor of optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO), and completed a residency in hospital-based optometry at the Baltimore VA Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. She is currently a clinical professor at UHCO, where she serves as Assistant Dean of Clinical Education and staff s the glaucoma, retina, and general eye disease clinics. In the classroom, Dr. Marrelli teaches in the ocular pharmacology, glaucoma and case-based learning courses. Dr. Marrelli became a diplomate in the ocular disease section of the American Academy of Optometry in November 2009 and is the secretary of the Optometric Glaucoma Society.

Tucson VA Residents: The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), based in Tucson, Arizona is a highly affi liated tertiary-care referral system serving veterans in Arizona, surrounding southwest States, and Mexico. The eye clinic at SAVAHCS is shared jointly between optometry and ophthalmology, which provides the residents with the opportunity to manage a spectrum of ocular disease. Additionally, SAVAHCS hosts the Southwestern Blind Rehabilitation Center, which provides world class programs for visually impaired veterans from seven western states. Low vision care is provided in both a comprehensive multidisciplinary inpatient and outpatient setting.

Dr. Katherine Anderson is a resident optometrist at Southern Arizona VA Health Care System. Her primary clinical and patient care interests include management of ocular disease, care of geriatric patients, and low vision rehabilitation. Dr. Anderson completed her Doctor of Optometry degree at Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition & Dietetics at the University of Maine, Orono.

Dr. Brandon Betts is currently an Ocular Disease/Low Vision optometry resident at the Southern Arizona Veterans Aff airs Health Care System. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry in 2019 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Organismal Biology from the University of Arizona. Dr. Betts is a native of Glendale, Arizona, and enjoys music production, sporting events, and travelling in his spare time.

Dr. Puja Patel is originally from India and moved to the United States at the age of 7. She has always been interested in the medical fi eld and working with underserved communities. Currently she is an Ocular Disease/Low Vision optometry resident at the Southern Arizona Veterans Aff airs Health Care System. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York, College of Optometry. In her free time, she loves spending time with her loved ones, playing with her dog and spending time outdoors.

Dr. Kathleen Phan is currently an Ocular Disease/Primary Care optometry resident at the Sierra Vista Community Based Outpatient Clinic. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University in 2019 and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking with her German Shepherd and trying new foods.

Dr. Gregory Yamaguchi is currently an Ocular Disease/Low Vision resident at Southern Arizona Veterans Aff airs Health Care System. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics/Applied Sciences from the University of California, San Diego. He received his Doctor of Optometry from Midwestern University Arizona College of Optometry in 2019. He enjoys golfi ng, basketball, and going on food adventures during his free time.

Dr. Jacquelyn Yi currently is an Ocular Disease/Primary Care optometry resident at the Sierra Vista VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2019, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona in 2014 with a major in Physiology and a minor in Music. Dr. Yi is a native of Tucson, Arizona and in her spare time enjoys drawing, cooking, listening to music, and playing the fl ute
