PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3 PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3
World Day of Prayer for Vocations: April 26, the 4th Sunday of Easter and also known as
“Good Shepherd Sunday,” is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. On this weekend, the
Church reminds us of our need to pray, as Jesus told His disciples, that “the Lord of the harvest
may send out laborers in his harvest” (Lk 10:2). For over fifty years the universal Church has
celebrated this Sunday as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In this way she reminds us of
our need to pray, as Jesus himself told his disciples, so that 'the Lord of the harvest may send out
labourers into his harvest'. Jesus' command came in the context of His sending out missionaries.
He called not only the twelve Apostles, but another seventy-two disciples whom He then sent out,
two by two, for the mission. Since the Church 'is by her very nature missionary', the Christian vocation is necessarily
born of the experience of mission. Hearing and following the voice of Christ the Good Shepherd, means letting our-
selves be attracted and guided by Him, in consecration to Him; it means allowing the Holy Spirit to draw us into this
missionary dynamism, awakening within us the desire, the joy and the courage to offer our own lives in the service of
the Kingdom of God.
Priestly vocations are necessary in the Church, because “without the priests the Church could not live this fundamental
obedience that lies at the heart of its existence and its mission in history, that is, obedience to the command of Jesus:"
Id, therefore, and make disciples of all Nations "(Mt 28: 19) and "Do this in commemoration of me"(Lk 22:"19; CFF. 1 Cor
11, 24), i.e. the mandate to proclaim the Gospel and to renew every day the sacrifice of His body delivered and His
blood poured out for the life of the world ". The problem of the shortage of priests affects all the faithful, not only be-
cause it depends on the religious future of Christian society, but also, the vitality of faith and love from each parish and
diocesan community, and is testimony of the moral health of Christian families. Where there are numerous vocations to
the religious and ecclesiastical state, is generously lived according to the Gospel ". Pope Benedict XVI in his apostolic
exhortation “Sacramentum Caritatis” # 25 affirms: “The pastoral care of vocations needs to involve the entire Chris-
tian community in every area of its life. Obviously, this pastoral work on all levels also includes exploring the matter
with families, which are often indifferent or even opposed to the idea of a priestly vocation. Families should generously
embrace the gift of life and bring up their children to be open to doing God's will. In a word, they must have the cour-
age to set before young people the radical decision to follow Christ, showing them how deeply rewarding it is” the
lack of vocations could response to deficiencies in our personal lives, the weakness in the faith of our parish, regarding
the young men and women, omissions and lack of interest. To deal with the problem of vocations we need to increase
our hope in God's faithfulness, that will give us pastors according to your heart (cf. Jer 3, 15) and rely on the grace of
God, beseeching the Lord of the harvest that send out laborers into his harvest (cf. lk 10: 2). But on our part is required
to create a vocational culture, i.e., cultivating favorable field for the seed of vocation take root, grow and flourish. This
field is characterized by gratitude, openness to service, affection, understanding, forgiveness, and responsibility.
Parish Vocation Promotion
“It is my hope that the local Churches and all the various groups within them, will become places where vocations are carefully dis-
cerned and their authenticity tested, places where young men and women are offered wise and strong spiritual direction. In this way,
the Christian community itself becomes a manifestation of the Love of God in which every calling is contained.”
Pope Benedict XVI, Vocations, the Gift of the Love of God Fr. Mariano Varela, IVE

grey amada. Señor, gemimos en la orfandad, dános
vocaciones, danos sacerdotes y religiosos santos.
tu dulce y Santa Madre.
Oh Jesús danos sacerdotes y religiosos según tu corazón.
Amén.
