This is something General Manag-
er, Tim Bryant, has wanted to do for quite some time so why not start 2013 off with a different twist for some good ole Pro Late Model racing and let’s see how it goes. I think the fans are going to like it.
Also in the lineup tonight are the
Modifieds, Beef O’Brady’s Sportsman and Butler U-Pull It Bombers. Need I say any more about these three classes? We know how exciting they always are.
By the way; if you haven’t heard
yet, Steve Buttrick DID NOT win the Sportsman feature last Saturday night in Mobile, but he did put on the best show of the night. As usual he was up front in his blue #33 but got spun out. When the green came out he began his march back through the large field and all eyes were on him as he gave the fans the excitement they all came for.
Tonight the Pro Late Models will make
their first appearance of the year here. They will open their season with 50 laps of “Hard Nose” racing.
Let me explain though, this “will not” be a 50
lapper all at once. The new format for Allen Turner Pro Late Models this year is a bit differ-ent than before and it’s been put together for the fans. We will qualify them and line them up for a 20 lap sprint race, and then we’ll give them a break to make some necessary adjustments to the race cars. During their break we will run some other classes and return with the Pro’s. This time around all cars that are on the lead lap will be inverted and they will be lined up for a 30 lap finale. Each race will pay points and good money to win.
This format ran last week in Mobile, and
was well received. Bryce Dulabhan won the 20 lap event in his first race in the Pro Lates, and 5 Flags favorite Junior Niedecken won the 30 lap finale. (Story inside).
#4 April 26, 2013
He managed to make it back up to second
but ran out of laps before he could knock Mobile’s Mark Barnhill off his perch. Barnhill is the only driver to win a race in 2013 at Mobile or Pensacola while competing against Buttrick. Will it happen again tonight?
Drivers are compet-ing on both tracks
for the new Gulf Coast Championship, where the points are combined. The stand-ings are posted on our web site.

It’s not how fast, but how far on a battery charge their unusual vehi-cles can go. Teams from Tampa to California are set to test their ideas of power in an electric car.

The NAPA 150 2 weeks ago here was a decisive win for University of Florida student Ben Kennedy of Daytona Beach. He won after leading every lap from the pole. Third place finisher Johnny VanDoorn from Michigan blazed his way to a podium fin-ish in his first NASCAR attempt. Sandwiched in between the pair was novice Gray Gaulding from Virginia. It was the best finish in the K&N series for the 15 year old rookie.
Kennedy and VanDoorn have both been here for the past two Snowballs. Young Gray saw 5 Flags for the first time...and all agree. Let’s do it again.
So, if they have access to Super Late Model cars, we can expect to see them back here. Speaking of the Snowball Derby, we are now accepting re-quests for renewals of reserved seats for the 46th Snowball.

“You gotta keep it wound up,” PLM veteran Wayne Niedeck-en Jr. says. “You better be on it when they drop the green.”“Junior” Niedecken, a longtime favorite here, was on it last week at Mobile International Speedway. After a strong showing in the opening race, Niedecken cap-tured the second half to pull his No. 99 into Victory Lane for the first time in quite awhile. “I think a lotta people are excited to see me win again,” said Niedecken, “I hadn’t given up. I didn’t forget how to win or how to drive.“Technology really has changed in the last seven years. Either you’re on it or you’re off. It took a little while for me to get a good grasp on it.” Read all of Chuck’s story on line at www.5flagsspeedway.com
