A reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. (2 Cor 5: 11-21)Your blessings Father

Brothers and sisters, Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuadeothers; but we are clearly apparent to God, and I hope we are also apparent to yourconsciousness. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you anopportunity to boast of us, so that you may have something to say to those who boastof external appearance rather than of the heart For if we are out of our minds, it is forGod; if we are rational, it is for you. For the love of Christ impels us, once we havecome to the conviction that one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died forall, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for theirsake died and was raised. Consequently, from now on we regard no one according tothe flesh; even if we once knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him sono longer So whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away;behold, new things have come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us tohimself through Christ and given us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God wasreconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against themand entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ,as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciledto God. For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we mightbecome therighteousness of God in him. Praise be to God always.

Then he saidto Thomas, "Put your finger here andsee my hands, and bring your hand andput it into my side, and do not beunbelieving, but believe." Thomasanswered and said to him, "My Lord andmy God!" Jesus said to him, "Have youcome to believe because you have seenme? Blessed are those who have notseen and have believed." Now Jesus didmany other signs in the presence of (his)disciples that are not written in thisbook. HOMILY OF POPE FRANCIS, Holy Saturday, 19 April 2014

The Gospel of the resurrection of Jesus Christ begins with the journey of the women tothe tomb at dawn on the day after the Sabbath. They go to the tomb to honour thebody of the Lord, but they find it open and empty. A mighty angel says to them: “Donot be afraid!” (Mt 28:5) and orders them to go and tell the disciples: “He has beenraised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee” (v. 7). Thewomen quickly depart and on the way Jesus himself meets them and says: “Do notfear; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me” (v. 10). “Do not beafraid”, “do not fear”: these are words that encourage us to open our hearts to receivethe message. After the death of the Master, the disciples had scattered; their faith had been utterlyshaken, everything seemed over, all their certainties had crumbled and their hopes haddied. But now that message of the women, incredible as it was, came to them like aray of light in the darkness. The news spread: Jesus is risen as he said. And thenthere was his command to go to Galilee; the women had heard it twice, first from theangel and then from Jesus himself: “Let them go to Galilee; there they will see me”. “Donot fear” and “go to Galilee”.Galilee is the place where they were first called, where everything began! To returnthere, to return to the place where they were originally called. Jesus had walked alongthe shores of the lake as the fishermen were casting their nets. He had called them, and they left everything and followed him (cf. Mt 4:18-22).To return to Galilee means to re-read everything on the basis of the cross and itsvictory, fearlessly: “do not be afraid”. To re-read everything – Jesus’ preaching, hismiracles, the new community, the excitement and the defections, even the betrayal – tore-read everything starting from the end, which is a new beginning, from this supremeact of love. For each of us, too, there is a “Galilee” at the origin of our journey with Jesus. “To goto Galilee” means something beautiful, it means rediscovering our baptism as a livingfountainhead, drawing new energy from the sources of our faith and our Christianexperience. To return to Galilee means above all to return to that blazing light withwhich God’s grace touched me at the start of the journey. From that flame I can light afire for today and every day, and bring heat and light to my brothers and sisters. Thatflame ignites a humble joy, a joy which sorrow and distress cannot dismay, a good, gentle joy.In the life of every Christian, after baptism there is also another “Galilee”, a moreexistential “Galilee”: the experience of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ whocalled me to follow him and to share in his mission. In this sense, returning to Galileemeans treasuring in my heart the living memory of that call, when Jesus passed myway, gazed at me with mercy and asked me to follow him. To return there meansreviving the memory of that moment when his eyes met mine, the moment when hemade me realize that he loved me.Today, tonight, each of us can ask: What is my Galilee? I need to remind myself, to goback and remember. Where is my Galilee? Do I remember it? Have I forgotten it? Seekand you will find it! There the Lord is waiting for you. Have I gone off on roads andpaths which made me forget it? Lord, help me: tell me what my Galilee is; for you knowthat I want to return there to encounter you and to let myself be embraced by yourmercy. Do not be afraid, do not fear, return to Galilee! The Gospel is very clear: we need to go back there, to see Jesus risen, and to becomewitnesses of his resurrection. This is not to go back in time; it is not a kind ofnostalgia. It is returning to our first love, in order to receive the fire which Jesus haskindled in the world and to bring that fire to all people, to the very ends of the earth.Go back to Galilee, without fear! “Galilee of the Gentiles” (Mt 4:15; Is 8:23)! Horizon of the Risen Lord, horizon of theChurch; intense desire of encounter… Let us be on our way!
