As kids leave, encourage them to sign up for GO Local with their family and friends! Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As you interact with kids, affirm them. Say something specific you appreciate about their personality, or something positive you see in their character. Today is a special lesson, because we’re preparing kids and their families for something special happening in two weeks: On May 12-13, there are NO CROSSROADS SERVICES. Instead, encourage everyone to sign up for GO Local, invite their friends to join, and show God’s love to their communities! God wants us to love and support one another. GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away, while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they’re going to hear.

MUSICAL PAPERS● Scatter large sheets of tear-off paper in a large open area.

○ Sheets of paper should be about 2-3 feet long○ Count the kids in your room. You’ll need 1 sheet for every 5 kids you have.

(If there are 60 kids, you’ll start with 12 sheets.)● Play some music and let kids move about around the open area, stepping anywhere

except on the papers.● When the leader stops the music, everyone finds a paper and steps on it as quickly

as possible:○ Two or more kids can be on the same paper.○ To be considered “on” the paper, a kid must have at least one foot fully on it. ○ The other foot may not touch the ground outside the paper.

● When the game continues, the leader removes one piece of paper, and kids continue moving around.

● Continue playing and removing papers until you cannot possibly squeeze any more kids onto the remaining papers!

● Tip: If you want, add some chairs to the game. These can be additional places for kids to go when the music stops (in addition to the sheets of paper).

Before you go to Large Group, you can ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader’s instructions.

The goal of this lesson is for kids to understand that when we show love in BIG ways, we are revealing God’s love to others in a way that makes them want to experience it!

● Welcome: Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids’ Club. It’s great to see you here! That was a really fun game we played together during Connect Time. You guys did a great job! Ask: What did you have to do to play that game? (Let kids respond.) Yep, everyone had to try and get on a big piece of paper, even when there was barely any paper left, and you had to squeeze together to fit!

● Ask: Did you have to work together to do that, when there was barely any room left? (Let kids respond.) Sure! Even though you started out on your own, you ended up sticking together so everyone could try to fit!

● Say: Today we’re talking about what it means to be on a team, and how you get more things done when you work together!

● Say: For example, if you were on a basketball team, what would happen if everyone on the team just stood around and talked about how to win? (Let kids respond.) You’re right, nothing would happen! I don’t think they would ever win! If a team wants to win, they have to actually work together and DO things.

● Say: Let’s check out a movie clip of two people who have to work together in a really intense situation. As you watch, pay attention to how, and why, they have to help other.

● Video: Star Wars / The Force Awakens

WELCOME

Main Goal: Welcome kids and review Connect Time.

WORKING TOGETHER

THE EARLY CHURCH

● Ask: So how did Rey and Finn work together in that scene? (Let kids respond.) Yep, they helped each other escape the bad guys by getting in the Millenium Falcon, and helping each other pilot it!

● Ask: Do you think either one of them would have escaped if they were alone? (Let kids respond.) Probably not! They were only able to do it because they helped and supported each other.

● Ask: Now, what if they had just talked about their escape plan, but didn’t actually go do it? What would have happened? (Let kids respond.) Yes, they would have gotten caught!

● Say: Every team that’s trying to accomplish something is like that. You can’t just talk about what you’re going to do if you want to get it done...you have to actually go DO it!

● Say: Today we’re talking about the greatest team we will ever be a part of: the church! Can anyone tell me what you think I mean when I say, “the church”? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it’s everyone in God’s family! People who are following Jesus, and changing the world!

● Say: Let’s check out a video and see what the early church was like, back when people first started following Jesus. As you watch, focus on the things that are the same as the church today, but also the things that are different!

● Video: Bible Theatre / Acts: The Early Church● Ask: So…first of all, did the early believers follow Jesus

just by talking? (Let kids respond.) No way! They actually DID things to follow Jesus! They ate together, prayed together, shared their stuff, gave to the poor, and showed love to those who need it! They also loved to hang out and have fun, just like we do in Kids’ Club!

● Say: Because Jesus’ followers worked together to actively love the people around them, something pretty awesome happened. Let’s read a verse from the book of Acts to see:

● Slide: Acts 2: 47b Every day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.

● Ask: So what happened? (Let kids respond.) Yep, every day, more and more people became part of God’s family. They saw the church working together to show love and serve others, so other people wanted to be a part of the church too! They couldn’t resist it!

GO LOCAL 2018

HOW CAN WE SERVE?

● Say: God’s love is BIG. It’s extreme. He sent his only son Jesus to die to take the punishment for what we’ve done wrong, and that was the most extreme love the world has ever seen! So when you’re a follower of Jesus, you’re part of a team that goes out and shows others what extreme love looks like.

● Ask: So now the question is….how can WE show EXTREME love to the world? What can we do in our everyday lives to act like the early believers did?! And not just by telling others about it, but by DOING it?

● Say: There’s something pretty cool happening in two weeks, and it’s the perfect way for you to be part of a team that goes out in the world, and shows love in BIG ways.

● Say: In two weeks, May 12-13, there will be no Kids’ Club or Crossroads services. Instead, we’re all going to do GO Local! Has anyone ever heard of Go Local before? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: It’s going to be a chance for us, the CHURCH, to work together, and show love to our community! Let’s check out a video and see what it will be like:

● Video: Go Local ● Say: This is what the church looks like: people coming

together and showing God’s love through action. Not just by talking, but by DOING. So make sure to ask your family if you can join GO Local. You can even invite your friends to join you, even if they don’t come to Crossroads!

● Say: Now we’re going to give you a chance to think of your own ideas. Think about what you heard in the video about the early believers, and about what you saw in that GO Local video. As we watch another video, imagine what you could do to serve others, and show them what God’s love is like.

● Video: Ask Shrimpola / Service● Ask: Did anyone think of some ideas of how you could

serve, and go show the world what Jesus is like? (Let kids respond.) Great thought, thank you!

● Say: Let’s watch a music video, and as you watch, try to think of one specific way that you want to show EXTREME love this week. One way that you can show God’s love through action.

Page 6: April 28-29, 2018 Acts Corinthians 16:19; 2 Timothy 4:19 ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · encourage everyone to sign up for GO Local, invite

WORSHIP AND PRAYER ● Music Video: All That You Need● Music video: Good Good Father● Pray: Ask somebody to ask God to help us look for

opportunities to shock people with extreme love this week.

Page 7: April 28-29, 2018 Acts Corinthians 16:19; 2 Timothy 4:19 ...49gwb73j4zuj2z3clp19vafg-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/upl… · encourage everyone to sign up for GO Local, invite

Goal: Kids will (1) understand how people in the church loved and supported other believers, (2) recognize that the way they loved, revealed God’s love, and (3) identify ways they can show God’s love to others

Why? As followers of Jesus, part of our job is to reveal God’s character through our actions.

Tip: Check for allergy alert stickers before you begin today’s activity!

GET TO KNOW KIDS● Go around the group and have each kid say (1) your name and (2) if you had $1000

to do something kind for someone, what would you do?

RESPOND TO THE STORY1. Tell me about the early church. How did they show extreme love to others?2. What was surprising about how the early church worked together as a team? 3. How has God shown us extreme love? How has he served us?

WORKING TOGETHER● Split kids into small groups.● Give each group a bag of 100 toothpicks and a bag of marshmallows.● Say: People in the early church worked together to serve others, and to show love to

the world. Let’s work together and see who can build the tallest tower! (then debrief):○ Could you have built it that tall with just a few toothpicks and marshmallows?

Why not? Why is every piece important?○ Why is it important to work together as God’s family? How could we

accomplish more by doing things as a team? GO LOCAL

● Give each kid a GO Local card. On the blank side, kids should write or draw one way they want to show EXTREME love, and serve someone else this week.

● Next, point out the information on the other side of the card: They can sign up for GO Local at crossroads.net/golocal by April 31. Encourage kids to show it to their family, and join the rest of Crossroads as we serve our cities on May 12-13 (remember, we’re doing this instead of church that weekend!)

● Encourage kids to invite their friends to join! This is something that ANYONE can do!
