The Coshocton Min-isterial Association and Women Of Witness Co-shocton are joining to-gether to host an exciting and powerful experience on Thursday, May 7—The National Day of Prayer be-ginning at 6:00 p.m. on the Courtsquare. As part of the program, 365 people,

reading from their own bibles, will face the four directions while reading a pre-assigned portion of scripture. This will allow the entire bible to be read in 15 minutes. The Chris-tian band, 7 Days, will pro-vide live music as part of the evening program. "We hope everyone in

Coshocton will attend and share in this 'His Word to the World' event," said Kathy Hendricks, presi-dent of Women of Witness Coshocton. "We will also be praying for the specific needs and issues facing Co-shocton and it's residents. We welcome everyone to take part."

Anyone who would like to participate in the bi-ble reading can sign up at the Good News Bookstore by May 1. "We want to be able to assign the 15 min-ute readings ahead of time so the readers can get com-fortable with their scrip-ture passage before the day of the event," added Hen-dricks. "As we focus our hearts and minds on the faithful promises of God, we ask that everyone keep the power of prayer at the forefront. We believe that His love will transform our community according to His perfect plan and pur-pose."

For more information, contact Hendricks at (740) 294-7291.

The Sport Zone provided the setting for the annual Relay for Life cancer sur-vivor’s dinner on Thursday, April 23. Sarahann Jen-kins, survivor chairperson, who coordinated the event, said about organizing the evening, “I was scared. I didn’t want to ruin it. Then I became excited and ner-vous – the whole program was great. Lots of laugh-ter, music and speeches – this is what we needed to hear . . . a lot of people think when they have can-cer that it is the end. This evening proves there is life after cancer. This helps heal emotional and mental wounds. It allows cancer survivors and their caregiv-ers to share their views at the tables. They know it’s

not the end of the world – I’ve felt that way. But when I saw the Coshocton Relay for Life here I got involved because the committee cares. The best thing we can do is make a new friend and share your knowledge. This has helped me more . . . I feel a part of everyone’s life – people here want you involved. That’s what it’s all about!”Charlotte Hinds, who is a breast cancer survivor, and is currently going through radiation treatment, said about the event, “I think it’s wonderful, bringing people together that have cancer”. Hinds mother, Janice, said, “I went to one of these in Florida but they didn’t go to this extent. Olive Corder, mother of Janice and Char-

lotte’s grandmother, who battled lymphoma cancer for 10 years, has been can-cer free for 15 years, said, “I think it’s wonderful that they’re doing this. I’ve been coming for three years – I wouldn’t miss it for the world”. Hinds added, “The support that I’ve received from my mom and Grand-ma has been lovely!” Later Hinds added, “This was a terrific evening and I had the chance to meet some-one that had the same can-cer I had. A lot more people were here than I thought. Cancer has affected a lot of people in Coshocton – I hope the number is lower next year”. Pastor Craig Redecker led the attendees in prayer be-fore a delicious meal of chicken breasts, ham, po-tatoes, bread, vegetables and cake for the survivors. Local singer Bobbi Moody sang two special songs, with the audience particu-larly enjoying her rendi-tion of ‘Telephone’. Moody certainly hit the high notes, not only in tone but also in emotion. Special speakers for the evening were Jim Eckelberry and Mary Ma-son, both cancer survivors. Eckelberry told those gath-ered that, “I consider my-self an old warhorse. I first has cancer in 1957 and then again in 1988. I was always confident of the outcome.

When you get comfortable, you get thrown a curve. My outlook changed in 1986, “Having cancer was okay. And then another curve came . . . my sister called and told me she had colon cancer. I took on the role of support person and checked on her weekly. I was her source of insight and infor-mation. She is now cancer free. Then I got thrown another curve last spring. I had a cyst removed from my thigh. The doctor said, “I’m sorry to have to tell you that you have cancer again”. Eckelberry contin-ued, “My definition of hope is, H is for Help, O is for being obsessive, become educated and informed, P is for Prayer, for strength and E stands for each day is a gift – savor it. I was con-sidered cancer free after six months. Eckelberry found out he was cancer free after six months and concluded by saying, “Remember when we get thrown the curves, it’s how we react to them that counts”. Leisa Kent, who has battled cancer twice, once in 2006 and again in 2007, said, “I’ve been to Relay, partici-pating with the Buehler’s team for two years and also with the post office team be-fore that. I’ve just never felt such support from friends, family and community, especially our church fam-

ily. (Kent attends Roscoe United Methodist Church) I’ve met many new people through this – it’s nice that we’re all working together to find a cure for cancer”. Pastor John Jenkins light-ened up the crowd with several one liners and jokes that had everyone laugh-ing together on a night of serious reflection but also a sense of accomplishment. Mary Mason told those in attendance that “she was shocked” when she was diagnosed. I wanted to get out of that doctor’s office. Luckily, I have a wonder-ful son-in-law – and my daughter, they are my pri-mary care-givers. I had ro-botic surgery – don’t settle for less than the best when it comes to the care for your cancer”. Mason added, “Ask questions. My doc-tor told me that I made him

work very hard. As cancer survivors, education is the key. No one should die of cancer. Let’s smash cancer by asking questions and getting answers. Let’s have smiles and giggles for the rest of your life!”Caregivers were given a Relay for Life ball cap as a token of appreciation – along with a hearty round of applause as the evening concluded. Guests also had the opportunity to see the 2009 Relay for Life quilt, which is being raffled off to raise funds for this year’s Relay. Chances are 6 tick-ets for $5.00 or 1 ticket for a $1.00. The winning ticket will be drawn at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at the Coshocton County Relay for Life. A goal of $2,000 has been set for the quilt, which was donated by the Coshocton Canal Quilters.

Cancer Survivors gather at Sport Zone

Members of the West Lafayette Lions Club, along with Club SCION, held

their annual music festival at Ridgewood High School on Friday, April 17. Per-

forming bands were Sticks and Stones from Newark and Salt Creek, a bluegrass group that hails from Hol-mes County. Club SCION President Shelley Howell explained that the word “SCION” means offspring or descendant. The club supports the youth of the Ridgewood School Dis-trict. Howell said, “We’re a small but mighty group of ladies. We just feel that the community needs to sup-port our youth – especially right now. Six of us are past graduates of Ridgewood and one of our members married a graduate. We’ve

done the Pet Parade at the West Lafayette Homecom-ing for 15 years”. This year’s homecoming will be on August 7 and 8 with the Pet Parade on August 8. For information on entering this year’s parade, interested per-sons can call 740-545-6528. West Lafayette Lions Club member John Hardesty said that the groups have given over $6,000 to Ridgewood graduating seniors over the past four years. Glenn Hill is President of the West Lafayette Lions Club.

Imagine a place where you can sit back and relax with not a care in the world. In one hand is a glass of fine wine while you overlook a beautiful country scene. You are surrounded by good people and good wine and the stress of everyday life just melts away. That’s the kind of ex-perience the new Heritage Vineyard Winery has to offer. Randy and Tina End-sley of Warsaw recently opened their new Heritage Vineyard Winery to the public on Saturday, April 24 at 11 a.m. This fami-ly-owned winery offers

their guests seven differ-ent American and French hybrid wines, with more to come later, as well as a plate filled to the edge with a variety of cheeses. The atmosphere is very peaceful. Guests can go outside on the front or back porch to enjoy a calm sum-mer evening, but there’s also plenty of room inside. A Gathering Room is also available by reservation for weddings or parties. No dinner is offered yet, but Tina Endsley says that may come in the future. They are also considering a sum-mer barbecue night out on

the back porch, but again, this is currently just an idea. Also, when visiting the winery, don’t forget to buy a souvenir before leav-ing. Beautiful wine glasses with “Heritage Winery” written on the side are for sale as well as many other gifts. Guests don’t have to leave after their wine-tast-ing. They can also stay in the Guest House, by reser-vation only of course. Tina offers a continental break-fast for all of her guests and they can enjoy the beautiful scenery of northern Ohio a little bit longer. “We hope our guests have a fun, relaxing day and enjoy some good wine,” said Endsley. The Heritage Winery is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. It is closed January and February, except by request. It will also be open later on summer weekends. For more information, visit their web site at www.heritagevineyardwinery.com. To make reservations for the Guest House, call (740) 824-4314.

Heritage Vineyard Winery opens its doors to the public

The Heritage Vineyard in Warsaw opened its doors on Satur-day, April 24 at 11 a.m. The vineyard is located right across from the Gospel Hill Ministry on Township Road 45. This pic-turesque scenery can be enjoyed when visiting the winery or also by making reservations to stay over in the Guest House, owned by the Endsley family for the past ten years.

C o s h o c t o n Business and Profess iona l Women (BPW) mobilized on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 to call attention to the wage gap in which women, on average, are paid 78 cents for every dol-lar paid to men. April is symbolic of the point into the next year that a woman must work in order to earn the wages paid to a man in the previous year. Because women typically earn less, they must work longer for the same pay. Over a work-ing lifetime, this wage disparity costs the aver-age American woman and her family an estimated $523,000 in lost wages. BPW/USA encour-ages employers to take ad-vantage of the Equal Pay Self-audit that is available at www.bpwusa.org . The wage gap affects working-women and their families and impacts future plan-ning; lower wages follow women into retirement during which they receive lower pension and Social Security benefits based on their previous salaries. Coshocton BPW mem-bers accepted a Proclama-tion from Coshocton Mayor Steve Mercer, to call atten-tion to the continuing wage disparity and to educate women and men about

solutions to wage discrimi-nation. It also acknowl-edges Tuesday, April 28th as Equal Pay Day in Co-shocton. The Proclama-tion will further encourage the business community to review their pay practices to ensure that women are not discriminated against in Coshocton, by performing an Equal Pay Self-Audit. “Women and their fam-ilies can no longer afford to be shortchanged. Equal Pay will continue as a BPW legislative priority and Co-shocton BPW is commit-ted to working toward an end to the wage gap,” said Coshocton BPW President Roma Vance. “We encour-age businesses to pay wom-en fairly, push for laws that will enforce current equal pay legislation and educate women on how to negotiate for higher salaries.” Coshocton BPW Equal Pay Chair Liz Herrell stat-ed, “Tell your legislators to celebrate Equal Pay by

co-sponsoring the Paycheck Fairness Act (S 182). The Pay-check Fairness Act will update and strengthen the Equal Pay Act, closing loop holes and im-proving the law’s effectiveness.” Coshocton BPW members Tomma Borden-kircher, Emily Kobel and Liz Herrell appeared on the WTNS

Radio Talk Show on Mon-day, April 27 to talk about equal pay. On Equal Pay Day, April 28th members passed out Pay Day candy bars with Equal Pay facts taped to them at COTC Co-shocton Campus and also in front of the Court Square. Founded in 1919, Business and Professional Women/USA is a multi-generational, nonpartisan membership organization which promotes equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, educa-tion and information. Es-tablished as the first organi-zation to focus on issues of workingwomen, BPW/USA is historically a leader in grassroots activism, policy influence and advocacy for millions of workingwomen. Contact Membership Chair Liz Herrell at 740-294-0199 or at [email protected] for more informa-tion. Membership is open to men and women, employed and unemployed.

Coshocton Equal Pay Day 2009

Accepting a Proclamation for Equal Pay Day is Eva June Kiser, 43-year BPW member; Lois Murphy, Mayor Steve Mercer, Marilyn Lauvray, and Liz Herrell.

The Coshocton City Schools will be presenting the sec-ond annual “Rock the Arts”, “A Celebration of Educa-

tion”, at Coshocton High School on Saturday, May 2 beginning at 10 a.m. The day’s activities will include

live music, games, corn hole tournament, concessions and lots more! The event is free to the public with the exception of concessions, face painting and tattoos. While you have lunch you can relax and enjoy live per-formances in a cabaret style environment. The event is coordinated by Myrtle Beall, art teacher at Coshocton with assistance from Jon Cotter-man and a very involved “Rock the Arts” committee. Dawn Shook explained that, “The kids have been fantas-

tic and have worked very hard on this event. We invite the community to come out and see how successful the arts and music program is at Coshocton City Schools while also enjoying some great food, art and music”. Scheduled entertainment includes Andrew Frank on the keyboard, Dan Baker on the keyboard, Sam Schmitt on guitar, a pajama fash-ion show, Half Moon Un-plugged, Dal Hae Kong on piano and the Pomerene Center for the Arts “Draw

The National Association of Letter Carriers, in con-junction with the United States Postal Service, will be collecting non-perish-able food items on Sat-urday, May 9 throughout Coshocton County. Items like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice will be collected for fami-lies in need throughout our community. The collected items will be split between New Life Ministries and The Salvation Army. You can help this cause by plac-ing your food donation at your mailbox on Saturday, May 9 before your letter carrier arrives. The asso-ciation has asked everyone to not donate expired items or items that are in glass containers. Known as the day that “your letter car-rier carries more than the mail”, May 9 promises to be a day that everyone can contribute to families in need throughout Coshoc-ton County.

NoticesFriends of the Animal Shelter to Open Thrift Store & Adoption Center in May. Friends of the Animal Shelter will open a new Thrift Store and Pet Adoption Center in May in the former Main Office Supply store location, according to Sandi Guinther FOTAS President. “The purpose of the Thrift Store is to raise money from donated household items to support the Pet Adoption Sponsorship program which was started by ‘Friends’ last September. FOTAS has been able to rescue nearly 200 dogs from the local Shelter since the program’s start Sept. 5th, 2008. However, funds are limited, and we needed a way to earn regular income to keep the program going. We have been looking for a site for months and finally found one that would work well for both purposes. The project would not be possible if not for an anonymous local grant,” Guinther said. Homeless pets adopted from the Shelter costs the group $40 per dog. In addition to that fee, FOTAS will be getting them spayed or neutered, heartworm tested, and for cats feline leukemia tested before adopting them out at the store. The adoption fees will reflect these costs. The Coshocton Animal Medical & Surgical Center of Coshocton has provided special pricing for these rescue animals. If the animals are not adopted within one or two weeks locally, they will be placed in rescues in larger nearby cities for adoption, so that more animals can be moved from the Shelter. The store will open first, and animals added within a two week period after the store opens. This will give us the time needed to organize and train volunteers who will be running the store Tuesday through Saturday if enough staff is available. Dedicated volunteers are needed to make the project successful. Anyone who would like to donate their time to Coshocton’s homeless pets can contact Guinther for a Volunteer Application daytime hours at 622-4184 or 622-9735 evenings. Donations can be dropped off at 504 Main Street weekdays from Noon to 1 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to Noon until the store opens.

“Come Learn With Us”. Childcare Cen-tral Preschool is accepting enrollment applications for the 2009-2010 preschool program. Children must be 3 years old by August 1, 2009 for the 3 year old class and 4 years old by August 1, 2009 for the 4 and 5 year old classes. Call 623-0443 to schedule a personal tour of the facility at 619 Main Street. We are located between the old YWCA and the former Serenity Tea House. Spaces are limited so enroll early to secure your child’s opportunity for a wonderful learn-ing experience.

Hydrant Checking. The Coshocton Fire Department will be checking hydrants in the city, weather permitting beginning on May 4, 2009. The duty shift will notify WTNS Radio and the The Tribune which area of the city they will be checking each day. The residents in the area that is being tested may experience some discoloration in their water. Just let your water run for a few minutes and it should clear up. The hydrants are tested each Spring and Fall to ensure that each hydrant works correctly. Thank you for your patience.
