FROM FR. MCNEIL
Joachim Seth Adoboe-Herrera
Christ is risen! He is truly risen! On this Easter Sunday, I join
our pastor, Fr. Troha, Fr. Pizmoht, Deacons John, Paul, George,
and our entire parish staff in wishing you a most blessed
Easter Day and Easter Season. May the light and joy of the
resurrection be with you today and every day.
Rather than “Happy Easter!” many of those with roots in Eastern Europe
and especially Byzantine Catholics greet each other today with “Christ is
risen!” to which the response is “He is truly risen!” I think this is a far
stronger greeting; it is a profession of our Easter Faith and calls to mind
the empty tomb rather than chocolate bunnies and jellybeans. I hope to
remember to use this salutation throughout the season and I encourage
you to do likewise.
As I’ve often said in homilies – as I know many priests have – having a
crucifix in our churches and in our homes makes no sense unless the
resurrection really happened. Had Jesus’ apostles and disciples stolen
the body – and they don’t seem to have been that brave – to make the
bizarre claim that Jesus had been raised, would they have had the
courage to profess that they had seen and talked and eaten with him
after the resurrection in the face of torture and execution?
Though people have denied the resurrection for two thousand years, we
know it to be a fact. Had Jesus’ death been the end, we would be the most
foolish of people. Paul says very clearly in 1 Corinthians 15:14 And if Christ
has not been raised, then empty (too) is our preaching; empty, too, your
faith. We worship not a dead man but a man who died and who has been
raised up to live forever and a man who is also truly God! It is amazing,
and it is true. By his rising, he has broken the power of death and offers us
a share in his own risen life, the indwelling of the Trinity in our hearts and
souls.
We cannot, therefore, experience anything but holy joy when we reflect
on this reality. It is our call from God to be joyful even in the midst of our
sufferings here on earth. We can be saddened by sickness or failure or
the death of loved ones, but joy is to be far deeper than these feelings.
Joy comes from our absolute conviction that God doesn’t just love “us,”
but that He loves me. His love for me will sustain me and lift me up and
His love is so passionate that nothing I can do – not even my greatest sin –
can stop His love for me.
May this Day and this Season fill each of us with joy and may we share that
same joy and the same risen life of grace with all whom we love and all
whom we meet.
Christ is risen! He is truly risen!
Fr. McNeil

EASTER SUNDAY
Alleluia! The exclamation rings out across the land, and we who are
disciples of Jesus Christ pause to reflect on the reality that he rose from the
grave and, in turn, conquered death. In today's colleges and universities, in
pulpits of every denomination, and in books and journals, there are those
who say it is unimportant whether or not he really rose from the dead. They
say that the facts do not impact the moral of the story. Of course, two thou-
sand years of Christianity give evidence that they are incorrect. What the
faithful of many generations have experienced and given testimony to is not
something built on an idea. It is not a philosophy or a self-help psychology.
The church is a direct result of real events in the course of human history.
Without those real events, we simply follow a man who showed us a different
way to live. Instead, we follow a God who emptied himself into a human form,
suffered the pain of torture and death at the hands of those he had created,
and then shattered the chains of death so that we in our human form may
follow suit. Today, humanity is redeemed. It is time to face the facts! @LPi

EASTER 2021
Happy Easter! It’s time to
rejoice! Let the joy of the Lord
fill your heart. I can’t help but thinking of what the
Blessed Mother went through during the thirty-
three years she spent with Jesus on earth. I am
sure there were so many joyful and sorrowful
moments that they experienced together. Then -
Good Friday came, when Mary watched her beloved
Son being crucified on a cross for us. She held her
son’s lifeless body in her arms. I can’t imagine her
sadness. However, she knew Easter Sunday would
come in three days. Her Son would rise from the
dead. She was overjoyed! Jesus is risen! Through
his death and resurrection, he saved many souls,
including you and me. You are priceless to him.
Once we pass through this life, he wants us to spend
eternity with him, his Mom, Saint Joseph and all the
Saints in heaven. Our joy will then be complete.
