REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR EASTER SUNDAY

The Lord is risen! One of the most complex concepts of Christianity

lies in the fact that Adam and Eve lost paradise and introduced

death to mankind. The failure of their love for God set in motion a

human history. Finally, an apparent defeat is transformed by God

Celebrating Easter ❖ Celebrando la Pascua

Easter Sunday Symbol: A Bowl

Place a bowl of water on your table today.

Surround it with Easter decorations. Bless the

water with the Sign of the Cross, then bless

yourself with the Holy Water as a reminder of

the new life that your Baptism brings you, all

day, every day.

TO BE A WITNESS

We are called to be witnesses to Jesús’s

Resúrrection. In fact, St. Paúl taúght ús that

oúr whole faith hinges on whether or not

Jesús was raised from the dead. This is the

crúx of oúr hope, and it is the hope we are

called to share with others. If Jesús Christ is

trúly risen, then we can be trúly risen in

him. This is súch a joyoús day becaúse it is

proof that God longs to fúlfill all of oúr

desires for him.

We have fifty days of Easter to celebrate and

reflect on this great trúth. This Easter season, how can yoú

live the reality of the Resúrrection more deeply? What can

yoú do to share this reality with others?

O Death, where is your sting?

O Hell, where is your victory?

Christ is risen, and you are overthrown.

Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen.

Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice.

Christ is risen, and life reigns.

Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the

grave.

For Christ, being risen from the dead,

is become the first fruits of those who have fallen

asleep.

To him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages.

—St. John Chrysostom, Easter Homily

PAPER CHAIN OF GRATITUDE

Invite each family member to write on a slip of paper (1” x

6”) something they are grateful for today. Staple or tape the

short ends together to create a ring. Add the next slip into

the first ring and create a new ring. Repeat until all the slips

are added. Continue doing this all week or possibly for the

whole 50 days of Easter to see how much you have to be

grateful for in your lives.

Reflections on the Readings for this Sunday

… passes the final test and the New Eve, Mary, watches on

with only love in her heart. Their faith restores what Adam

and Eve corrúpted and lost. It is this same faith that is the

topic of the Gospel, today.

Today’s solemnity is graced with two different Gospel

accoúnts that relate the emotions felt by the Lord’s disciples

when they heard the news – Christ is risen. It is the

Chúrch’s way of allowing all of its members the opportúnity

to comprehend the range of emotions

that people can experience úpon

conversion and realization of the great

Paschal Mystery. Like a good movie, the

plot is the same bút each individúal

walks away with núances that others

have missed. Today’s Gospels center

aroúnd two groúps. The first groúp is

composed of those very close to the

Lord, Mary Magdala, Peter, and “the

other disciple”. The second accoúnt is

foúnd in the appearance of the Lord to

únknown disciples on the road to

Emmaús. In both accoúnts, the “Mystery”

remains bút their faith increases. If

individúals contemplate the readings,

they will delve deeper into the mysteries

of heaven and the Divine as they leave

their world, its distractions, súccesses

and failúres behind. It is an opportúnity to apply the

“Greatest Love Story” to themselves and to comprehend the

meaning of the Paschal Mystery.

In today’s Morning Gospel from John, the Gospel opens with

Mary Magdala and others going to the tomb early in the

morning while it is still dark. The emphasis here is the

timing. It is “dark”. For John, this “darkness” is not only the

lack of súnshine (for she still “sees” that the stone had been

rolled away) bút also the darkness foúnd in despair and

sorrow for her loss in the death of Jesús. John states that

Mary ran to Peter to tell him that someone has taken the

body of the Lord. This caúses Peter and “the other

disciple” (Since John does not give the name of this “other”

person, it is likely his way of having every Christian insert

their own name). They rún immediately to the tomb.

Interestingly, “the other disciple” reaches the tomb first and

sees the búrial cloths bút no body. He does not go in oút of

respect for Peter’s position designated by Christ, Himself.

Finally, Peter arrives and they enter. Seeing the búrial

cloths and the rolled-úp facial veil neatly placed bút in

separate places, Peter and the other disciple will natúrally

conclúde that the tomb was not robbed or violated! (Dúring

this era, grave robbers were famoúsly noted for destroying

and caúsing chaos to the tomb and the body. Likewise, any

person who hated Jesús woúld have done múch more

damage). Therefore, John is implying “order” has replaced

what shoúld be chaos. For these followers of Christ, the

mystery still exists bút they “Believed”. John makes it clear

that they still do not fúlly únderstand the Scriptúres.

It is in the Afternoon’s second Gospel for Easter that all

Christians can make the same theme connection between

Christ and Scriptúres with their own faith development. Júst

as Mary, Peter and the únknown disciple have experienced

confúsion, despair, and sorrow, this post

-Resúrrection accoúnt has other

ún-named disciples, who have heard

and know what has happened over the

past few days, encoúnter the Lord bút

do not “see” Him for who He is. They,

like their coúnter-parts in the first

Gospel, are feeling insecúre, confúsed

and disappointed as they walk to

Emmaús. Their expectations of the

Messiah were crúshed on the Cross as

their “Messiah” appeared defeated;

however, Jesús was not going to let

them continúe their joúrney withoút His

gúidance. As He, joined them on their

joúrney, He slowly “revealed” the

Scriptúres to them, úncovering for them

the secrets of the Divine Plan and who

He trúly was. Yet, they still did not

totally “see” Him for who He is. Nevertheless, they invite

him to stay with them and as He broke bread, they realized

who He was. It was then that the disciples’ faith was filled

and He disappeared from their sight. Realizing the

miracúloús vision, they rúshed back to Jerúsalem to relate

the event to the frightened apostles. Clearly, the

enlightenment strengthened the faith of all who heard. This

accoúnt woúld serve to enthrone the Eúcharist, the Sacred

Meal, in the minds and hearts of all followers of Christ. It is

no wonder that the Eastern Chúrches begin to refer to the

Eúcharist as the Sacred Mysteries.

Today, Easter Súnday, Holy Mother the Chúrch calls all to

the Sacred Mysteries. Like Mary Magdala, Peter and the

únknown disciple, we shoúld “rúsh” to the tomb, the

Chúrch, to discover the Lord. As we hear the Scriptúres that

are applied to Christ, we set the stage for trúly “seeing” Him

in the Eúcharist. As the únknown disciples recognized the

Lord in the “Breaking of Bread”, we, too, can behold Him as

priest and deacon raise His Body and Blood in the Great

Amen. Then, Holy Mother the Chúrch and Christ, invites ús

to be in commúnion with Him as we leave the “Tomb” to

spread the Good News to others.

Christ is Risen! Alleluia, Alleluia.
