ENVISIONING THE CHURCH WOMEN WANT A Conference on Women and Church Join Catholic women and men of all ages, to celebrate and explore the past and future of women in the Catholic Church. Keynote speakers include Elizabeth Johnson and Miriam Therese Winters. The conference is April 16-17 at Boston College. For more information including workshop topics please visit www.bc.edu/church21 or contact Lynn Campbell, 549-0300 x36. .

Catholic Corner Why is Eucharist a sacrifice? “Lord, accept this sacrifice at your hands…” We say this at every mass at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Have you ever wondered what is being sacrificed? Jesus died on the cross long ago, and we know that his sacrifice WAS pleasing to God and that the Father DID accept that sacrifice. So, what sacrifice is being offered at mass? When we celebrate Eucharist, we remember Christ’s sacrifice, and we participate by offer-ing OURSELVES to God and service of God’s Kingdom. By aligning ourselves with Jesus’ self-sacrifice at the Last Supper and on the cross, WE are the sacrifice! The gifts of bread and wine on the altar represent US mounting the cross with Christ so that we may offer our-selves to the Father through him, with him, and in him. At the Last Supper and through his life and death, Jesus gives us a command and an ex-ample (“do this in memory of me”) of life lived in service of and communion with (1) God and (2) the community/world. Eucharist nourishes us by modeling the union with Christ and our brothers and sisters that we should seek to live out in our everyday lives. To learn more about Eucharist, come to the class today at 9:15 or Monday at 7 pm. - Mary Ellen Foley, M.Div.

A Prayer for the Church

God, our Father, we pray to you for the Church of your Son Jesus. Let her be resplendent with the beauty of Jesus. Let her avoid painting herself with the vain beauty of the world. Let her not be disfigured by the wrin-kles of old age ; let her represent for all people the hope of the future. Let her face be purified from every stain of pride; let her show preference for the poor and the humble. Let her be holy and spotless; let her not be maimed by error. Let her be beauti-ful as one betrothed, all dressed for her spouse; let her shun the unseemly “adornments” of money and power. Lord Jesus, you have loved your Church, and you have given yourself up for her; we pray to you: guide this Church that she. In turn,. will love all people, and put herself at their service.
