Pre-Film Activity for Today:TKAM Quote Reaction Partner Discussion

"Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing

you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes

you do.“

- Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee:

 To Kill a Mockingbird

What is Atticus’s message to his children with this? What life-lesson is he teaching them?

Discussion:

How do you define courage?

Who do you identify as a courageous person (other than Atticus) in life or literature?

Do you agree or disagree with this definition of courage?

Row Work for This Week: ROW WORK due on Thursday– I will collect

this!ROW #5:

In the novel, Harper Lee uses BLACK & WHITE IMAGERY to stress the problems and separateness of the two races in the 1930s as a way to point out the continued separateness in the 1960s.

Identify 4 places in the novel where she uses this imagery and explain its impact on the reader:

TWO YOU MUST DO: 1.) Jem’s attack on Mrs. Dubose’s white Camilla flowers & what Mrs. Dubose stood for/what was Jem symbolically destroying???

2.) and the mud/snowman….

Next, explain the impact of the director’s decision to FILM the novel in black and white versus color.

Page 15: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Row Work for ROW #6: What’s in a NAME?

Discuss the real meaning of character’s name

Connect it to the character and that character’s

actions in the novel – explain it

Discuss why the name is “symbolic” -- what it

it is symbolic of

Discuss why Harper Lee chose that name and how it helps readers better understand the story?

NAMES:

1. Atticus

2. Robert E. Lee Ewell

3. Mayella “Violet” Ewell

4. Last name “Finch”

5. “Arthur” Radley

6. Nickname “Scout”

Page 16: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Today’s Film Segment will be short- 25

min.

Be thinking about your

row assignment as you watch….

Page 17: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Post-Film Activity for Today:

Stand up for…in TKAM I can name 3 characters who

have demonstrated courage [theme] and explain how they did so

I now understand the whole “Mrs. Dubose-Jem” incident through the lens of courage and why the flower in the box for Jem is a sign of Mrs. Dubose’s forgiveness [theme] of Jem for ruining her flowers

If I had been Mrs. Dubose, I would have forgiven Jem: Discuss

I believe Atticus did the right thing in having Jem read to Mrs. Dubose:

? Did he “repay” for the damage he’d caused?

? How did he get to see real courage – not a man with a gun—courage in personal strength to do the right thing?

Pre-Film Activity for Today:

Stand up for…in TKAM I now understand why

Scout’s behavior at the dinner table was wrong and was punished by Cal in the kitchen:

With a partner, brainstorm 3 possible problems that Atticus and his family can anticipate experiencing as Maycomb residents learn he is defending Tom Robinson

I agree with Atticus: Failure to do his job and defend Tom Robinson to his full ability would mean that he could not “hold his head up”– not for himself or with his family…Discuss

How does Jem’s behavior indicate he is maturing? Discuss:

Page 21: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Pre-Film Activity for Today:

TKAM Quote to Ponder

"Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open."

- Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee in

To Kill a Mockingbird

How does this demonstrate that Atticus is “an advocate

for truth and justice,” a THEME in the novel?

Discussion:

How can you tell he believes strongly in standing up for what he believes in?

It can be so hard, sometimes, to stand up for the right thing, do the right thing:

WHY?

Why is the Atticus character so, so important in this book in conveying Harper Lee’s message about racism?

Page 22: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Today’s Film Segment

Don’t forget your ROW

WORK assignment!

Due Thursday

Page 23: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Post-Film Activity for Today:Stand up for…in TKAM

I agree that there are some things which are truly innocent and need protecting

I believe my society attempts to protect the innocent among us

Remain standing if you believe our society is mostly successful at protecting the innocent: Discuss

I agree with Atticus: one should not hurt or kill things which only provide joy and beauty [ mockingbirds ] in our world

I can identify with the symbolic mockingbird because I have seen this happen in my world– an “innocent” was hurt in some way: emotionally, physically, or other

Page 24: April 6-10 Finishing TKAM. Monday, April 6th Tentative Plan for This Week: 1. Monday-Wednesday: Pre and Post-film discussion activities and finishing.

Pre-Film Activity for Today:TKAM : Journal Response – 10 minutes

"The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a

person's conscience.“

- Atticus Finch, by Harper Lee,

To Kill a Mockingbird

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???

Address these when writing:

What is one’s “conscience” ? What is Atticus saying here and WHY is it important for his kids to understand this?

Do you agree or disagree and why?

What “message” is Harper Lee trying to send to readers in the 1960s????
