Long Live the King! The Last Queen’s Day

“There is a warm bond between the royal family and Aruba.”

30 April is not just a day in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It’s a celebration of the bond between the citizens and their queen.

e custom became popular a er princess Wilhelmina was born, celebrating her birthday on August 31rst, known as “Princess Day”. When she became queen, this changed into Queen’s day a er she started her reign.

Her crowning was even proponed not to interfere with Queens Day. When her daughter Juliana became Queen, the date changed to 30 April, Juliana’s birthday.

Our current Queen, Beatrix, who’s Birthday is 31 January decided to keep to date of April 30,in honor of her mother and of course in April the weather is far more favorable for festivities and ceremonies then mid- winter.

is year, Queen Beatrix Announced that she would abdicate her throne to her eldest son, prince Willem-Alex-ander, who will be the rst King a er more than 100 years of Queens ruling the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

So what’s a typical Queen’s day like? In short since it’s an o cial holiday, most people go and attend the festivities organized by various groups. Some of them, like the o cial visits of the Queen are nationally coordinated, others, like the royal fan clubs locally.

Most of the activities are ea markets and traditional Dutch games like koekhappen” (cake-biting) and other outdoor activities. Amster-dam and Utrecht are famous for their ea markets that start on the eve of Queen’s day.

Since the royal family are members of the house of Oranje-Nassau (derived from the Orange region in France), the traditional color to celebrate Queen’s day is, you guessed: Orange.

Everyone and everything gets an orange touch. e traditional tri-color ag has an orange pennon on top (the Queen rules), there’s an orange liqueur and not to mention the “orange tompoezen”, pu pastry lled with custard and topped with orange glazing.

Especially with the crowing of the new King, the web shops are selling anything thinkable related to the royal family and or orange colored. You can almost out t your whole house accordingly.

As of 10 October 2010, the Kingdom o cially consists of four sepa-rate countries that are each other equal. ere are: Aruba, Curacao,

Saint Maarten and e Netherlands. e governor of Aruba is the representative of the Queen on Aruba and as such non-exec-utive head of government.

Historically his role has grown, as he is her representative, to receive and accompany the Queen when she visits plus to manage, and oversee the activities related to the royal family. For instance on 26 of April, it is customary to honor those who have served the Kingdom in a humanitarian way, for instance by volun-

teering a lot with a special decoration or knighthood, traditionally referred to as “lintjesregen” (Ribbon rain).

Anyone in the Kingdom can nominate a person they think made a di erence. A er a special committee has examined the person’s e ort, the decoration is awarded by the governor.

is year, Queen’s day, because of the abdication, will be di erent. On 30 April 2013 Prince Willem- Alexander becomes King and his wife,

princess Maxima will become Queen.

A er the o cial ceremony in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, they will, among other things, tour in an antique sloop through the canals of this city. rough video connections each community can share and follow the activities.

And of course on Aruba, we will participate with the celebrations throughout the Kingdom. e bond between Aruba and Queen Beatrix has always been warm and Arubans see our royal family as the glue that holds the Kingdom together. e same warm welcome and cherished bond was noticeable when the royal couple visited two years ago.

A special committee, formed by representatives from the Governor’s Cabinet and the Council of Ministers , is coordinating all projects and activities. Of course we hope that everyone will put out their ag and decorate homes and windows in Orange or royal themes.

Our future King has requested to in-volve children as much as possible. e celebrations will start on 26 April with a Kingdom wide breakfast on all schools, followed by a morning of fun healthy activities Called the King’s Games”,

with which all schools in the Kingdom (hence also Aruba) will be participating,

Another Kingdom wide activity is the creation of a book, titled “My dream for my county” Anyone in the Kingdom can draw, paint, sketch, write, rhyme or video their vision of the Kingdom. A er a selection, the best creations will be bundled and published and all households will copy. And the videos will be featured online.

e third Kingdom wide activity is the creation of a special song for our new King (koningslied). Online anyone can suggest lines and famous Dutch composers and artist will compose the song. It will be sung by video connection live to our new King from all corners of the Kingdom at the same moment (130 PM on 30 April).

And of course the traditional celebrations will continue. e commu-nity centers ( Centro Di barrio) will organize activities, there will be a shing contest, a miniature sailing contest and much much more fun

activities. Regrettably this year will be the last Queen’s ball and Queens Day.

But next year on the 27 April, you can decorate every-thing orange again, since we will be celebrating King’s day.

Long live the King!

Special thanks to Mr. Martijn Boelen, Ms. Nicole Hoevertsz and Mr. Roel Samson & the governor’s kabinet.

Statue of Princess Wilhelmina

Wilhelmina Park

“ Wilhelmina was the fi rst of three queens to rule the Kingdom of the Netherlands for more than a hundred years..”

Special thanks to Mrs. Yvonne Webb-KockDirector O ce of MonumentsAruba

2013 is a year of changes. Since 16 March 1815, e Kingdom of the Netherlands is a monarchy and has been reigned since 1890 by Queens. In 1890 Wilhelmi-na, with her mother Emma as regent, became Queen and in 1898, when she was 18, reigned by herself. A er her ( Wilhelmina), her daughter Juliana reigned the Kingdom and currently her granddaughter, Queen Beatrix reigns the Netherlands. For over 100 years, the Kingdom of the Netherlands was reign by Queens. is year, Queen Beatrix announced on 28 January, that she would abdicate her throne on Queens day ( 30 April) in favor of her eldest son, Prince Willem-Alexander. He will be the rst King to rule the kingdom. Since the relationship between the Royal House and Aruba has always been one of warmth and joy, we thought in the light of these changes it would be nice to share the story of the one of Aruba’s cherished monu-ments, the statue of Princess Wilhelmina. e statue of Princess Wilhelmina (31-08-1880 – 28-11-1962 reign 1898-1948) in the eponymous park was unveiled in October 1955,by her daughter, the then reigning Queen Juliana. To the statue belongs an elevated base with stairs. e Wilhelmina Memorial Committee initiated the task of constructing and tting. During one of their meetings this idea was already discussed on Monday 2 August 1948. e Committee was formed at the time by C.H.G. Eman, H. M. Nassi, E. Bartels, J. G. de Castro and L.A.C. Lacle. e location of the statue was previously agreed on: in the new to construct park, south of the eastern end of the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard. At rst it was suggested the Queen mother would be portrait sitting on a pedestal of Aruban granite. e honorary committee was formed by Dr. L. C. Kwartsz (honorary chairman), Dr. J.E.M Arends, J.H.A. Eman and J. E. Yrausquin. Furthermore, in January Jan Beaujon, A.AM. Carpay, R Hoom, L. Hope, H. Light Field, Alfred Pinkes, RemigioFranks, Jacinto Erasmus and Willibrord de Cuba were invited to participate. e Working Committeewas chaired by E. Bartels.

rough the mediation of Dr. Umberto Gianesi, director of the Galle-ria d’ArteFiorentina, the Florentine sculptor Angelo Lualdi was cho-sen. Her royal highness Wilhelmina granted her consent and the court agreed which photos the sculptor could use.

e personal secretary of the princess, Miss Geldens, would travel to Florence to give consent to the clay model. Princess Wilhelmina would be portrayed in white marble, a spitting image of the original model. She wears a tiara, jewels and on her le chest an insignia ( is may be the decoration belonging to the membership of the Military William Order MWO. If this assumption is correct it’s a nice reminder of Queen Juliana’s rst royal decree: awarding of the Military William Order to her mother].

In total, the committee needed

assume of A 22,000 for the statue and pedestal to be commissioned and, of course, shipping it to Aruba.. e necessary funds were largely raised by the Aruban population through donations, collections and recruitment parties. e Executive council ultimately guaranteed the missing funds. e ve natural stone steps of the two staircases had to be ordered telegraphically “last minute” before the August before the unveiling could take place. On September 16, at two o’clock at night the Italian cargo ship ‘Etna’ docked in the port of Oranjestad. In one of the crates image of Wilhelmina was safely wrapped, the other crates contained the marble for the base and pedestal. A crane of the Lago re nery put the image on the designated place in the park. e construction of the Wilhelmina happened undersupervision of DOW ( the department of Public Works). e base-ment consists of a marble base plates coated with parts in various kinds of natural stone. Quadrant stairs with ve steps give access to the plateau with the image. On the front is a chiseled text can be read: WILHELMINA Nos Reina Stima 1898 to 1948.( Wilhelmina, our beloved Queen)

Curtain CallThe solution for your windows.

“ e right type of window dressing can set the mood of a whole room in an instant, making your house your home”

Close your eyes and think of light owing from crisp white curtains framing the view of our beautiful azure blue ocean. Or think of modern shades made of those clean materials that keep out the heat, yet lter the light to a delightful ambiance. Curtains or the current virtually endless options in fabrics or materials, window solutions, are essential to creating atmosphere, whether it’s at home or in your o ce. It’s funny how a window solution can set the mood for a whole room. Roman, honeycomb or rolling, horizontal or vertical shades will add a touch of simple e ciency. Lush long embroidered drapes will instantly add warmth and co-ziness to an empty space. Yes, the ru es from the past have moved on to rich washable fabrics that complement a room rather than smothering it. A pattern or bright colors in the fabric can lighten up a dull room in an instant. Somehow

with the right window solution a living room feels more like home and your children’s room more a magic recluse, then just as room. It’s true nowadays the possibilities of styling your windows are vir-tually endless, say Elsje and Carolina Lacle, owners of Curtain Call, it hardly matters what size or shape your windows are. Square, oval, rounded, there can be a customized solution. Since Curtain Call is a spe-cialized company, with over 5 years of experience on Aruba. It’s custom-ary for us to meet with our clients in their home and measure each side of every window you’d like to have dressed. It o en seems like most frames are equal, but in our experi-ence, it’s better to exact. At Curtain Call, we have a wide selection of window dressings, rang-

ing from fabrics to synthetic materials, to natural bamboo and we can virtually create any solution to t your style. We also carry embroidered or patterned fabrics, in di er-ent prints and high quality brands. From simple stripes to intrinsic patterns, there’s an abundance of choice.

And of course, at Curtain Call you can nd anything that accents window dressing, like bars, trims, tabs and tiebacks. When people come to Curtain Call, they know they want quality, but the abun-dance of choice can sometimes be overwhelming. at’s why we help our clients with a personalized consult in our showroom and try to see the best t of window dressing for our customer’s interior. We

deliver quality. Take for instance one of our top sellers at the moment, a pull up curtain that doubles as a sun screen, actually keeping the heat out.

Available in di erent colors and sun lters, it’s a perfect solution to keep your home stylish cool. Of course, living on Aruba, the most famous window dressing are shutters. We carry an updated version of the traditional shutter in di erent types, so we can accommodate almost any budget. Another great window solution is a rolling cur-tain that you can “set” in three modes. Fully closed, privacy mode, or open. But the best thing is of course to see for yourself, which solu-tion would t your home or lifestyle. Since we visit our clients, to get the right t, it’s best to call beforehand to make an appointment.

“Papiamento and Dutch are the offi cial languages of Aruba ”

PapiamentoAruba’s own language

Language is considered the most important unifying factor of a culture. Language carries all thoughts and human experience, culture and identity. Language transfers culture.

e most widely spoken language on the Dutch Caribbean islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao is Papiamento. is year we commemo-rate that 10 years ago (in 2003) Papiamento was recognized as o cial language in Aruba. In Aruba 68.34% of the population have Papiamento as the most spoken language (CBS CENSO 2010). e total amount of speakers in the Dutch Kingdom is about 226.600.

Our image of the world, how we experience reality (live), our norms and values, all are transferred with language. Language is not a neutral instru-ment, for many of us language is anchored very deep in our being. Sense of belonging is very important in a society. It is the language we speak which determines with what culture or class, category or group we feel connected and to which nation we feel we belong. Papiamento is the mother language of the majority of the population of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Papiamento, one of the so called “contact or creole languages”, origi-nated in a situation of contact with di erent linguistic in uences and with a basis in the seventeenth century.

Linguistic in uences came from indigenous languages (caquetio an arowak language), Spanish and its variants, Portuguese and its variants, Dutch, African dialects (grammatical in uence) and later, with the establishment of the oil re nery in1929, from English. e debate on the origin of Papiamento centers on the Portuguese and Spanish in uence, which

was rst and where it came from. Some linguists sustain the hypoth-esis that Papiamento is a relexi ed o shoot of an early Upper Guinea Portuguese Creole variety. e oldest documents in Papiamento are from the year 1775 in Curacao and one from Aruba dated 1803. In the colonial period standardized languages like we have today did not exist, there were many variants and dialects.

According to linguistic scienti c criteria Papiamento is a language in its own right and not a macaronic blend of standardized languages. Papiamento has its own grammar, form of making sentences, its own orthography and it has the status of o cial language.

Considering the social functions of Papiamento, its evolution and social status it has, it is one of the so called, creole languages (relative young), that is most studied and considered unique in comparison with other creole languages. We are one of the few countries in the world, that were colonized, that has not the language of the colonial country, as the language of daily use of the majority of it’s population, we have our own language.

A language that, during it’s history, against all oppression, developed from spoken language, to written language and language of gener-

al cultural use. Dutch as the other o cial language remains the language of instruction in education (since 1936). English is an obliged subject and Spanish can be chosen in education. In a globalized world now-adays the word languages become more important for the economy, trade and to continue with advanced

education abroad. So don’t be surprised, many Arubans can commu-nicate in a minimum of four languages, depending on their education,

working and life experience. In fact Aruba is a multi-linguistic society.

Many languages are considered by UNESCO endangered languages. It is very important for a language to have literature, books of consulta-tion, scienti c books and the function of the language in education is very important, these are the wealth of a language.

As national language and as o cial language we have to give Papiamento the value it de-serves. It is very important to have enough facilities, teachers, correctors and material available to learn the history and to learn to read and write our own language well.

Besides cultural expressions like music, dance, theater, plastic arts, literature is also very important for all societies. Not only for educa-tion, but also for our culture in general litera-ture in Papiamento is very important for our future. “Bon bini na Aruba y un feliz estadia!” (Welcome to Aruba and have a happy stay!).

A pentagon of culture & historyWillem III Tower and Zoutman fortress

“The fortess used to be right on the shoreline and the tower served as a lighthouse”

One of the most prominent landmarks in Downtown Oranjestad is without a doubt the Willem III Tower and Zoutman fortress. Painted in bright white, blue and red, it’s not only a monument penta-gon fortress and tower, but also home to the foundation of the historic museum. Besides a permanent exhibition about the history of Aruba, there are various temporary educational projects to that rotate on a diff erent base.

For instance right now there is an exposition by the local artists Rita Maasdamme with dolls in their various historic contexts, says Ferdi-nand Franca, director. I’ve held this position for two years now and we are trying to expand the public knowledge of the fortress Zout-man and tower as a cultural center. For over 25 years, each Tuesday, most locals and tourist know the Bon Bini ( welcome in Papiamento) Festival is held here in the courtyard, but few know about the other functions or the museum that is housed in the part that used to be the fortress. Th e fortress dates back all the way to 1798. In 1796 the “Comité Militaire” (Army Committee) was founded in Curacao with acting governor Johan Rudolf Lauff er as civil captain, to construct fortress on each of the three Leeward Islands in connection with the international political instability of the time.

Fortress Zoutman was built alongside the Paardenbaai(Bay of horses; now regained land across the Valero downtown )to withstand water based as well as land based attacks and should help in case of internal insurrection. Th e fortress was fi nally completed around 1798 and was named aft er Admiral Johan Arnold Zoutman. At that time, the for-tress lay close to shore. Currently everything you see from the road to the Renaissance Market place has been regained from the ocean

during the last century. Mind you , Aruba is part of the kingdom of the Netherlands and the Dutch are famous for regaining land from sea.

Between 1964 and 1980 the fortress was restored. All the additions that had been added over the years, like bans, sleeping quarters were demolished.A section of the pavement was brought to the surface again at the restoration. -Th is is, together with the walls of the fortress and kitchen with the oven (has been in use until 1936), the oldest and most original part of the fortress.

Architects traced the foundations of the old watch post, barracks and storage facility. Based on old images material a

reconstruction of the three buildings was made on new foundations. Cavity walls gave the ideal thick-ness as a replica of the original walls made of rock and hardcore stone. Th e storage was widened in order to accommodate the new museum function. Enough of the fortress, the Willem III Tower’s origi-nal function was a lighthouse, guiding

ships safely to the Paardenbaai. The lighthouse, was built in 1868 at the main entrance on the West side of the fortress, on request of lieutenant gov-ernor J.H. Ferguson in 1866 to the Governor of Curacao in order to place a town bell. The decision was made to build a lighthouse where the bell could be placed at the same time and where the time could be shown on the hour (this happened until 1933).

The tower was named after William III, King of the Neth-erlands, who would be the last king for more than a century and was lit for the first time on his birthday, February 19, 1868. The kero-sene lamp had been previously replaced by a two pit petrol lamp (an old example of the California Lighthouse) and in 1930 by an acetylene lamp. The tower received electric lighting in 1935 and in 1937 it obtained the form it has until today.

The tower received a fifth floor segment with a town bell on each side. The wooden floors were replaced by concrete floors. The new bell was ordered at Petit & Fritsen (Aarle-Rixtel). The wooden balcony was replaced with a balcony with concrete floor. The lamp was then still situated in one of the corners. In

1963 it was taken away and the tower lost its function as a lighthouse. Nowadays, the fortress and tower is the perfect backdrop for any cultural event. From christenings, to Holy Communion, weddings & birthday parties, you can reserve part or the complete location to throw an excellent party, have a recital, meet with your customers in a different ambiance or present your latest accomplishment. Customiza-tion is available on request. Curious to find out more about this dazzling cultural corner of Oranjestad? Simply call during office hours 588-5199 or come take a look in at our exposition. You’re more than welcome to visit.

Special thanks to Ferdinand Franca.

One of the best things of buying a new home, whether it is a second vacation home, the rst house you will start a new life in, is that it implies a new start. Not as harsh as the New Year’s resolutions, but somewhere you can envision yourself in your new home sitting in a lush tropical garden, or taking up a hobby from that organized garage. And if it doesn’t go as planned, you can always blame the move. A er all packing your whole life into boxes for most never is simple. Here are a few tips to help you move.

Are you moving locally or abroad? If you are moving abroad, check to see how you can transport your stu and how much time it will take to arrive. Shipment overseas can take up to three months.

Friends & family or a professional moving service?Of course everyone has a di erent budget, but try and see what ts best. Even if you’re moving lo-cally you might consider a moving service. Don’t forget to check your insurance to see if your move is covered.

Start sorting & packing earlyGo through any stu you don’t use on a regular basis (like Christmas decorations). Obtain mov-ing boxes and start packing and labeling the boxes. Most people nd it easy to pack by room. E.g. Dave’s stu , Kitchen, etc. Don’t pack any stu you know you will be using soon, but allow some extra time to pack the last items around the house. Organize a yard sale or donate items you aren’t taking with you.

Preparing your moveDo you have the key on Moving day? Is there water & electricity? Did you notify your insurance company and others of your move? Check the internet to see useful checklists on moving

Keep important documents and valuables safeBefore Moving day, prepare a folder of all important documents (title, deeds, in-surance, passports, etc.) and keep them safe. is can either on you while you are moving( carry-on luggage) or in a location (at a friend, bank safe) that you trust.

Post moveDo force yourself unpack those boxes that have been lingering I the corner. Another option is to leave them closed for a few months, open them up, asses if you really really need the stu and organize a yard sale from the items you no longer require in your new home.Good luck moving.
