Dear Readers,Welcome to the April issue and we have some exciting news for you this month. We have recently acquired a sister publication called the SP4 Magazine which is delivered monthly to homes in the SP4 postcode north of Salisbury. For local businesses, we are offering further discounts to promote your services in both magazines.

You will have seen our new “Kids Corner” over the last few months and we have been running competitions with fantastic prizes. This month will regrettably be the last competition due to the low number of entries we’ve been receiving. It’s the old adage “use it or lose it” unfortunately, in the same way that we need to support our local businesses to ensure that they are still around in years to come.

Happy Mothers Day to my wonderful and much loved mum and have a great Easter everyone!

Best wishes,

Downton Leisure Centre has shown its commitment to the government’s Change4Life campaign by investing

£40,000 in new gym equipment to help keep the local community active and healthy. The leisure centre is creating opportunities to get fi t whatever your age or fi tness level. Making a change4life is a commitment to building a more active lifestyle and combining it with a balanced diet. With the brand new equipment and support from helpful and friendly staff, the leisure centre is ready to help you build an active routine incorporating nutrition and exercise. They create a specifi c programme designed around you and your goals and mix it with many other ways of keeping active. Carol Tanner of Downton made a change for life in 2010 and lost over 9 stone, and even completed a 400 mile charity cycle ride across the UK in October last year. She now runs 10km and other races competitively.“I was determined to get fi t and more active and the staff at the Leisure Centre gave me the support and motivation I needed to stick at it.”

The Centre offers extensive group exercise programmes with sessions that are designed for all ages and abilities including studio cycling, aerobics, kettle bells and abs back and core. The facility also has two indoor tennis courts and a multi-use sports hall for football, badminton and basketball.

It is now even easier to keep the whole family active this Easter with a holiday programme for children between 5-15 including a whole range of activities from Archery, Badminton, Cricket and even Kayaking (held at Calshot Activity Centre).

There is also plenty to keep your kids active during term time. Multisports sessions provide the opportunity for 5-11 years to take part in informal coaching sessions, ranging from football, tag-rugby, cricket, badminton, hockey, netball and many more. Teenzone sessions allow 11-15 year olds to use the gym after school whilst being supervised by our fi tness instructors. Junior studio cycling and junior circuits are also a great way to stay fi t and healthy.

To make your change for life, call the centre on 01725 513668 or pop in and see us on Wick Lane, Downton, SP5 3NF.

This season’s most fashionable colours for interiors are strong and bold: daring blacks and metallics, vivid citruses and a

range of sorbet-like Fifties shades. Yet colour can be complicated: stray away from safe neutrals and who hasn’t ended up in a fog of indecision? Our guide to using colour will help you avoid clashes and select the shades that work best for you.

Colour is a hugely dynamic tool, affecting the way we feel in a powerful, albeit often subconscious, way. And we each have our own feelings about colour, so that one person’s warm and intimate room is another’s nightmare of brash, clashing shades. All of which makes using colour a rather daunting undertaking. But never fear: there are some simple guidelines to follow.

Painting a room a new colour is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to introduce a fresh look. If you’re not sure where to start, there’s a wealth of inspiration to be found in books or magazines, and the paint manufacturers themselves can be a great help, whether in the form of brochures showing their colours in action, a website with the facility to paint a virtual room or colour cards that demonstrate which colours work best together. If you’re wary of using too many different colours, but would nevertheless like to introduce some contrasts, a good rule of thumb is that darker and lighter shades of the same colour are always good together (simply look vertically up and down the paint charts).

So far so good. Then, to narrow your choices down, you’ll want to consider the colours of your existing furnishings, the practicalities of how you live (darkish colours are useful in a busy hallway which might suffer from knocks and mud splatters, for example) and the architecture of your property. The latter informs not just the suitability of certain colours – perhaps historic colours for older properties, for example – but also their shades, as you may be able to get away with bolder and/or darker colours in large and light rooms.

Another consideration is where to put

which paint colours. Bear in mind that hallways, stairways and landings are linking areas; when you stand in them you may be able to see a number of different rooms, so you should consider how their colours will work together. As a general guideline, restful colours, such as pale blues, lilacs and pinks, often work well in bedrooms, and bolder shades in dining rooms: red is a classic choice, in particular. In a hallway you could make a strong statement with a vibrant colour that introduces the house to visitors, or opt for something paler that will maximise the sense of space. Conventional colours for bathrooms are watery blues and greens, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t opt for something completely different. Colours for living rooms should generally be chosen to work around the existing furnishings – you might pick a colour from a favourite cushion, vase or painting, for example; and the same goes for kitchens, where you’ll already have cabinets and worktops that will dominate a scheme. Finally, in children’s bedrooms and playrooms you’ll probably want to use a mix of fun, bright colours that are lively and stimulating.

Asda’s spring range features citrus-coloured accessories for a fresh look in the living room (0500 100055; www.asda.co.uk)

Colour Confidence 8 | www.downtondirectory.co.uk | 01725 511098 | [email protected]

Experimenting with paint colour is essential, as it can be diffi cult to get it right fi rst time. Always paint sheets of white card with your chosen samples and tape them up around a room, to observe in different lights (what looks like a lovely purple in daylight, for example, can become black after sunset). In a living room you’ll want the colours to work in both daylight and artifi cial light, whereas in bedrooms and dining rooms it is more important that they look attractive at night-time. Take care with colours that are on the edge between two different shades, as these change more than any others in different light conditions, and while this can be dramatic, it may not be quite what you expect. And be careful to buy the right undercoat – it really does affect the end result.

If the thought of colour everywhere just sounds a bit too much, there are several ways in which it can be introduced in more subtle ways. You could paint just one wall a strong shade, for example, with the others in co-ordinating neutrals. Or how about some beautiful wallpaper, an oversized stencilled motif or easy-to-apply wall stickers? Alternatively, keep walls white or very pale and add colour elsewhere. Changing a duvet cover or a tablecloth, for example, will instantly transform an otherwise neutral bedroom or dining room, while new cushions, vases and pictures will do the same for a living room. Get handy and paint a chest of drawers or a side table, or make a loose cover for a sofa or chair: think laterally and this is where, for not too much effort and expense, it’s possible to ring the changes and make colour work creatively for you. It’s as simple as black and white.

Dark grey walls and fl ashes of amethyst make for a sophisticated, yet restful and cosy, bedroom. All products are from Marks & Spencer (0845 302 1234; www.marksandspencer.com)

Things are growing fast at the Trussell Trust at the moment. We’re on target to launch our 100th UK foodbank in April and we’re looking at having fed 3,500 people in the local area in the past year. We’re excited that we’re stretching to meet the increasing need for our services, but we urgently need more funds to underpin the growth! A simple way to help this happen is for people to join our events and get sponsorship. We’re holding a ‘Pedal Against Poverty’ spin-bike event at the Downton Cuckoo Fair on 30th April in partnership with Downton Leisure Centre. We did this last year and the idea is that people sign up to ride a static spin-bike raising £1 for every minute that they’re on the bike. Whether you sign up

for 5 minutes or 5 hours is up to you! There will be at least two spin-bikes so people can challenge a friend to a race, or you can just hop on and see how far you can go - we’ll be setting an overall target distance soon to give everyone something to aim for (last year we did a virtual cycle tour of our UK foodbanks). We’d love anyone and everyone to sign up and have a go, or turn up on the day – last year participants ranged from politicians to school pupils.

We’re also holding a ‘Ladies Night’ on 6th May at The Trussell Trust in Salisbury where we’ll be selling the designer and vintage clothing donated to our shop plus lots of free pampering opportunities, jewellery making classes, mocktails, raffl e etc. Tickets cost £3 to include a free mocktail and cake.

It’s the perfect evening out! To fi nd out more visit www.trusselltrust.org, call 01722 411244, or email

April Fool’s day: a time for practical jokesand having a laugh at the expense of others. Luckily, there’s no need with our top ten humorous books - great for giving and guaranteed to tickle the funny bone (no itching powder or whoopee cushions required).

Simon’s Cat by Simon TofieldFor anyone who has a cat, Simon Tofi eld’s animations, based upon a mischievous cat’s antics pre-meal time, are hugely funny. From screen to page, nothing is lost in this collection of comic strip drawings, which will have feline fans everywhere grinning from ear to ear.

F In ExamsThe Best Test Paper Blunders by Richard BensonThe clock is ticking and you haven’t got a clue what the right answer is. Either that, or you fancy blagging an A* with your hilarious wit. Here is a collection of wrong (but very amusing) answers taken from test papers on a number of subjects.

1000 Unforgettable Senior Moments by Tom FriedmanDon’t be put off by the fact that the author only managed to remember 246, you still get value for money with this hilarious collection of anecdotes, from when Jimmy Carter left the codes he needed to launch a nuclear missile strike in his suit jacket pocket (at the dry cleaners) to the time Emerson forgot Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s name (at Longfellow’s funeral). It’s nice to know you’re not the only one, isn’t it?

The Life of Fly by Magnus MuhrYou may think that the life of a fl y must be fairly dull, buzzing around and getting swatted all the time, but Swedish photographer Magnus Muhr has shown the world

otherwise. This collection captures what they really get up to: from sunbathing and sports to performing their own version of Riverdance.

The Book of Bunny Suicides by Andy RileyIt’s a hard life being a rabbit, and the long, dark days result in a great many taking their own lives. Always keen to come up with a more memorable way to end it all than their hundreds of siblings, here we see the methods favoured by the likes of Flopsy and Peter. Have tissues at the ready.

A Simples LifeThe Life and Times of Alexandr Orlov by Aleksandr OrlovHerein lies the history of the nation’s favourite meerkat. From escaping the Kalahari desert and enduring a war with Mongis Khan, we learn of how Aleksandr and his family made their name by fi nding ‘cheep insuranz deels’ for the people of Great Britain. Fully illustrated and hugely entertaining for any Compare the Meerkat fan.

The Tommy Cooper Joke Book compiled by John FisherCrammed full of tricks, one-liners, jokes and wit from the great comic, this book is a delightful and fun collection. Recounting the time Tommy’s friend drowned in a bowl of muesli (due to a particularly strong currant) and culinary advice such as how to prevent rice from sticking (cook each grain separately), this title is sure to have its readers in stitches.

NEW RELEASE 101 Things to Do Before You’re Five by Sally NortonOut now in paperback, this hilarious book captures all those disgusting and awful things we do when we’re small. A great gift for new parents, and indeed anyone who was ever young and stupid enough to share the dog’s dinner.

Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) would like to thank

Salisbury’s shoppers for their generosity at last month’s street collection. Four-legged ex-racers raised a total of £180.35. GRWE press offi cer Stuart Parslow said the charity was deeply grateful for the contributions.“It proves again that we are a nation of animal lovers – and also how engaging GRWE dogs are. It’s a fantastic total considering we live in such diffi cult times, the people of Salisbury have been so generous.”

The money collected will go towards rehabilitating unwanted ex-racing dogs, as well as rescuing lurchers and greyhounds found straying or handed in to pounds. “GRWE is staffed completely by volunteers, which means the money goes straight into caring for the dogs.” Stuart explained.

Volunteers and their dogs will be out-and-about again this month. On Saturday 23rd April they will be at the Tesco Store, Southampton Road, Salisbury and on Saturday 30th April they will be at the Downton Cuckoo Fair where greyhound goodies will be available to buy at the stand so please stop by to say hello and browse.

If you would like to fi nd out more about retired greyhounds, please visit the website www.grwe.com or call 07000 785 092.

I’m not messed up and I’m not whining as day to day life is pretty darn good. More than good in fact. I wake up each morning

at dark o’clock to receive a body blow by a urine soaked four year old, but after 40 baby wipes and a striptease we’re all good again. Well, until the baby wakes up and clambers around on top of me like she’s boulder climbing looking for a pint of gold top in the dark, but really, it’s just marvellous. Of course it’s 5.20am and there’s a long day ahead but I’m not whining, really I’m not as life, as I said, is just dandy.

My husband thinks I cook like Nigella, my four year old loves me most of the time, in between hating me more than cold sprout sandwiches, and the baby, well I’m clueless what the baby thinks of me, apart from seeing a bottomless mug of milk on legs. I sail throughout the day barely needing to lift a fi nger in order to get the children dressed, fed, washed and entertained. Oh no, that’s what my husband thinks. Silly me. My day, as you know, is a frenzied tornado of activity just to end up with a house that looks much the same as when I woke up, hence why my husband thinks its so easy. Nothing ever looks any different.

Anyway, I’m not a whiner as you know and even though I could write a book on the injustice of my husband’s comments I won’t. I’ll save it and perhaps when he’s unwell one day and can’t get out of bed I’ll read it to him. Twice.

The point of my ramblings is that I cope well with the treadmill of motherhood, I love it, I love my tadpoles and I even enjoy, to an extent, the ‘job’

of being a housewife. For weeks and months at a time I breeze through the day and fl op exhausted onto my bed at 9pm where my husband has to heave my legs the last bit of the way and I slip into a coma for a couple of hours before it all starts again. But, sometimes, just occasionally, in the middle of washing up or ironing I fi nd my body involuntarily buckles into two like a folding deckchair and I fi nd myself on the fl oor with my rubber gloves on and tears dripping off my chin. It happens so fast I think I’ve fainted but I recognise the symptoms and feel the black knife slashing through me. I want her back, I want her here, I need to lean on someone, I need to be the child again and have someone look after me. And not just someone. I want my Mum. I’m forty two, all grown up with my own bedroom and everything and I’m allowed out as long as I want but for twenty three years now I haven’t felt that warm blanket of fl uffy, unconditional love wrapped tight around me. That feeling of no matter what I do, it’ll always be alright and I’ll always be adored and that everything I do is amazing. I know not all mothers treat their children like that, but mine did.

Almost every person I know relies on their Mum, sometimes to an alarming degree, and their life looks all safe and cosy with them in their lives and I envy that feeling of utter safety.

Eventually I pick myself up off the fl oor and fi nish off the washing up, wipe the surfaces round and put the kettle on for the 15th time (as I have a lot of time to kill remember) and pick the baby up and give her a big, wet Mumsy squeeze and off the day trots again. Just a 10 minute relapse, nothing to report really. There’s still time to make sprout sandwiches for lunch and a wholesome and unhealthy dinner with lots of butter and bacon in it to keep husband happy.

It may be six months before my deckchair collapses again and in that time my life is truly spiffi ng. Really.

Local Mum and writer, Hayley Thornton.

My Mum died at the age of 42. I was 19 and my brother was 21. She died whilst out on a bike ride. A lorry hit her.

April is all set to be another busy month – both in Westminster and in the constituency, with my House of Commons Defence Select Committee duties again due to take me out of the country early in the month. It is part of the privilege of carrying out Parliamentary and constituency duties that one suddenly becomes in great demand and engagements are impossible to confi ne to daylight hours – as my recent night out with Salisbury Street Pastors and my participation in Alabare’s sleep-out amply demonstrated! As a result, I am looking forward to taking the opportunity to spend a couple of days of quiet time with my family over Easter.I received a large number of representations on the subject of the forestry review, from people in the south of the constituency who enjoy their proximity to the glorious New Forest. I hope that the 300 or so people who took the trouble to write to me – by far my largest postbag on any single issue - feel pleased that their advice has been heeded.Democracy has done what it is meant to do – namely, function as a two-way conversation - and that is something we should all feel satisfi ed about. What went on was a consultation in its truest form. The people made their views known and through myself and my colleagues, their efforts have been rewarded. At a time when we are spending £120m a day, just to service the interest on our national debt, there had to be more compelling ways to save £200m (over ten years)! My advice surgeries, which take place most weeks, continue to be well subscribed. Being available to my constituents is very important to me. Unfortunately, there is never enough time to accept every one of the dozens of kind invitations I receive each week – much as I might like to. But, when constituents come to me needing to discuss the problems that face them in their individual lives, I make it a point never to be ‘too busy’.I am holding a bumper pre-Easter surgery this month and my offi ce is always happy to make arrangements for me to visit constituents in their homes or contact them by telephone to discuss pressing matters of concern.I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a peaceful and joyful Easter.

Spring Clean your Garden!

With the fl owers blooming and new leaves appearing on the trees, April is a time when most

of us like to have a bit of a tidy-up and revitalise the garden for summertime. Whether you’re preparing for the growing season, or simply wanting to improve the look of your garden, we have some great ideas to give your green space a good spring clean.

Tools of the tradeBefore you tackle your garden, have a quick sort through your tools. Give them a clean, decide what needs to be replaced and scrub off any rust, before rubbing on a little vegetable oil to keep them in tip-top condition. Check your mower and hedge trimmer to see if any blades need sharpening or replacing and throw away any old chemicals cluttering up your shelves, which may even present a health risk.

Throw out the old plantsStart by removing dead annuals or plants showing any sign of disease, and pull up invading weeds - but don’t add them to your compost bin. Any bulbs which have fi nished fl owering will need deadheading, but don’t remove the leaves as they will provide the energy for next year’s growth. Some shrubby plants with woody stems, such as buddleia and lavender, will need to be pruned in order for new blooms to appear on the freshly-cut branches.

Clean your deckingBarbeque season is just around the corner and if you are doing a bit of entertaining, you’ll want your decking to scrub up well. Start by picking a dry day and go over the wood with a stiff broom or multi-purpose

pressure washer. Now that the deck is free from any clutter and dirt you can focus on cleaning the wood using a dedicated product, fi nishing with a good rinse to remove all traces of the chemicals. Allow the deck to dry completely before replacing the furniture and other items.

Patios, paths and rough edgesA little touching up here can make the world of difference. Start by trimming overhanging grass from the edges of your patio, pathways and borders, and check to see if any stepping stones have sunk below ground height – if they have, raise them so that loose soil won’t cover them when it rains. Brush off any old leaves from your patio before giving it the once-over with a pressure washer. If you don’t mind a bit of graft, scrub with a specialist path and patio cleaner. Finally, pull out any invasive weeds from the gaps between the patio stones, and lift up encroaching moss.

Bring your grass up to scratchIf all the trudging around in mud hasn’t done your garden any favours, it’s well worth investing in a lawn fertiliser, which will make your grass lovely, thick and green – as well as preventing weeds and moss from forming. If you have a real problem with the latter, fi nd a feeding product which incorporates weed-killer. At this time of year, aeration is also important: you don’t need any

fl ashy equipment – by piercing holes with a pitchfork about 4 inches deep evenly across areas where the lawn is suffering, you’ll improve drainage which will do wonders for the grass.

Be house proudDon’t neglect the exterior of your house. Wash your windows, and if they have wooden frames, you may want to give them a fresh lick of paint. Clear out dead leaves from the guttering and check that nothing is blocking the soakaways. Throw away any old children’s toys or clutter, and remove cobwebs.

Treat garden furniture To prolong the life of your garden furniture, it will need a yearly service to remove any rust spots and prevent against decay. Your wooden furniture will benefi t from a good rub down and coating of varnish or teak oil. To remove rust spots, scrape away with a steel wool pad, and use a dry paintbrush to remove particles left on the surface. Finally, apply a waterproof sealer, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Prepare the soil If you plan to grow some fruit and veg, purchase a soil-testing kit from your local garden centre. Once you know what kind of earth you’re dealing with, you can improve its quality by adding various nutrients. Beds and vegetable patches will benefi t from the removal of stones, twigs and plant debris, a good dig, and the addition of some organic matter such as rotted-down horse manure and a layer of mulch.

Get growingThe weather is warming up and now is the ideal time to cultivate some seedlings. Start off with some tomatoes, sunfl owers, salad leaves and chillies, and place them somewhere warm, ready for the sun when summer comes. Clean all your old pots with a scrubbing brush, re-plant your window boxes and, fi nally, sit back and enjoy!

What do Apple, Google, Microsoft, Panasonic, Sony and LG have in common? They – along with seemingly every other electronics fi rm on the planet – would like to connect your TV to the Internet.

So why on Earth would you want such a thing? The short answer is choice: depending on the system you choose, you can access video on demand from every broadcaster you can think of, rent videos, watch YouTube or catch up with people on Facebook from the comfort of your sofa.

There are three main kinds of connected TV kit:There are connected TVs, such as Sony’s Bravias, Panasonic’s connected Viera sets, Samsung’s Internet@TV and LG’s SmartTVs. There are set-top boxes such as Apple’s Apple TV, Internet-enabled Blu-Ray players and Google TV devices such as the Logitech Revue. And then there are games consoles: Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. Of the three options the consoles are the most limited: they’re designed for gaming fi rst and foremost, so any TV-related features are pretty basic. In the case of the Wii you get access to BBC’s iPlayer, and that’s about it.

TVs and set-top boxes are much more interesting, but there are big differences between different fi rms’ offerings. Apple TV does YouTube and iTunes movie rentals but not services such as iPlayer or LoveFilm; Microsoft’s Xbox 360 offers Sky (if you’re a Sky subscriber) but doesn’t offer iPlayer

or YouTube; top-end Samsung TVs offer not just Facebook but video chat using Skype; Google TV devices offer CNN and all the major UK catch-up services such as 4oD and ITV Player, not to mention regional variations including uTV’s uPlayer. There are also important differences in the way TVs and set-top boxes handle your existing media, such as home movies. Sony equipment, Windows PCs and other devices can communicate via the DLNA standard (Digital Living Network Alliance,

a standard for transferring media between different bits of kit), but the Apple TV can only access your content if it’s on a PC or Mac running iTunes. If you don’t fancy

leaving your computer running all the time, then the Apple TV isn’t for you.

If that sounds enormously complicated, that’s because it is: we’re in the very early stages of connected TV, and as a result there are lots of competing visions of the future. You’d need to be pretty brave to drop £1,000-plus on an Internet-enabled TV when it’s not entirely clear which technology will triumph. That doesn’t mean you can’t join in the fun now, though: set-top boxes and connected Blu-Ray players give you the fun of connected TV without the expense of a whole new set. An Apple TV is £99, Logitech’s Google TV-powered Revue should cost around £200 and an Internet-friendly Blu-Ray player such as Samsung’s BD-C6900 is around £250 online. If you buy one of those and Internet TV t u r n s out to be a passing fad, at least you’ll still have a top-end player for your Blu-Ray discs.
