Robotics Team 302 has qualified to compete in the Michigan FIRST Robotics State Championship. The competition will be held at Saginaw Valley State University on April 12-15. The Dragons, currently ranked 6th in the State, are well prepared to take on the challenge coming off three weeks of successful competitions. In addition, event awards were received for Entrepreneurship, which recognizes a team for their comprehensive business plan to scope, manage, and achieve team objectives. Engineering Award, which celebrates an elegant and advantageous machine feature. It’s been five years since The Dragons have qualified for States and they are very excited to take on the challenge.

Lake Orion High School donates $5,000 to Cell Phones for Solders

Thanks to strong student participation and the generosity of local businesses, Lake Orion High School’s “Cell out for Soldiers” in January raised a total of $5,000 for the national Cell Phones for Soldiers charitable organization. This group provides phones and calling cards to soldiers overseas so they can stay in-touch with their loved ones back home. Earlier this month, the school’s Leadership Workshop class that managed the Cell Out presented a symbolic check to Principal Steve Hawley and the high school staff to thank them for their support. Lake Orion Successfully hosts Student Council State

Conferences in Grand Rapids!

Lake Orion's student leadership class set the bar to a new high as host of this year’s Michigan Association of Student Councils State Conference in Grand Rapids earlier this month. Our students arranged for Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio to be a keynote

speaker at the event, which included 2,000-plus high school leadership students from more than 100 schools across the state. This was the first time Coach Dantonio had ever addressed such a large group of teenagers and his message to push through challenges and “win” every day fit perfectly with the crowd, made up of leaders in their schools and communities. He shared his own leadership experiences with the students, stressing the importance of setting goals and the importance of communication. Lake Orion’s leadership class planned the entire weekend event, from establishing the theme “Free to Lead” to selecting the speakers and organizing group exercises and small group presentations. Several LO students also were recognized individually, including Lindsey Hodge, Unsung Hero Award; Madison Stephens, Ryan Kolp, Emma Modock and Jessica Laconis, Award of Excellence; and JP Gurgel, Exceptional Service Project Nominee.

Lake Orion High School Choirs Exceptional Success

LOHS choirs were showered with high, high praise all day at district festival. All four choirs had beautiful moments to share and the judges really appreciated their performances. The scores reflected all of the judges’ comments. For the first time that I know of, LOHS has four choirs invited to State Choral Festival (all receiving “1’s”). The choir groups are: Campus (youngest group), Una (combined band and choir ensemble), Chorale, and Chamber.

At the state solo and ensemble, the LO Choirs had 6 ensembles and 8 soloists that competed. Every single one of them shared some wonderful music with poise, heart, and professionalism. All 8 soloists received 1st division ratings! The soloists at the event were: Anna Trzcinski, Mark Snider, Mikala Bart, Megan Lareau, Melissa Gabriele, Alex Walters, Taylor Barker, and Maya Maurer. All choirs received excellent sight-reading scores including two perfect sight-reading scores (Chamber and Una). Three of the 6 ensembles re-ceived perfect (90 out of 90) scores for their performances (Chamber, Una, and Chorale Treble 1).

Lake Orion’s Chamber Choir has been selected to perform at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival! This is a huge honor! MYAF is an annual celebration of the best arts students in the state. Not only was Chamber selected for this honor, but their performance was considered so good that they bypassed the selection committee altogether as Michigan’s automatic bid! MYAF also invited Chamber to be the featured choir at MYAF’s prestigious opening ceremony! With this invitation, our choirs have now been features on every state-wide platform that Michigan offers (American Choral Directors Association Michigan State Confer-ence, Michigan Music Conference, and MYAF).

SOS - Students Offering Support

Lake Orion High School students reach out to support peers. The purpose: break down barriers and stigmas surrounding mental health issues and youth suicide by providing ongoing peer-to-peer support, strategies and resources to all students related to maintaining mental health, reducing depression and other forms of unhealthy living.

The goal of the SOS program is to have an ongoing student-to-to-student system of support in place to provide help to anyone in crisis. Superintendent Marion Ginopolis said it is clear that our students want to be a part of the solution and, if they are not involved, the district is underutilizing a valuable resource.

Now it is third year, the SOS team has gone from class-to-class multiple times, educating more than 3,500 students at Lake Orion’s high school and middle schools about crisis warning signs and valuable information and resources about how and where to seep help. The SOS team is 270 plus students strong in grade 9-12. More than 3,500 high school students in grades 9-12 and 700-plus middle school students have received the SOS lessons. The Lake Orion SOS was recently recognized by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners with a proclamation to honor its dedication and commitment to making a difference. The Lake Orion SOS team has conducted presentations on the program at the Oakland University Student Leadership Conference for two years in a row. Channel 4, “Click on Detroit” recently aired a special news broadcast about the SOS program: http//www.clickondetroit.com/news/Students-issue-new-type-of-S-O-S-to-help-prevent-suicides/20480480.

It is important to note that the SOS students’ roles are NOT to act as counselors or to evaluate whether a person is in crisis; rather their role is to inform a school counselor or administrator who can follow up and get that person the help that they need.

For further information about the SOS program, contact Superintendent Marion Ginopolis (248-693-5414) or LOHS Counselor Michele Novak (248-693-5638).

Assessment Information

ACT vs. SAT What is the difference?

Colleges in Michigan accept both SAT and ACT scores. Universities nationwide accept either test. ACT is a test of achievement, based on curriculum and measures “classroom” intelligence. SAT is a test of aptitude and tests more of a “general” intelligence. The tests also differ regarding format, subjects tested, scoring, level of math, guessing and whether or not they include a career component.

The remaining 2016-2017 test dates are listed below. Colleges consider the highest score if a student takes the SAT/ACT more than once.

Applying to College FAQ’s

When should I start?

The summer before your senior year is the best time to start. Most students do the majority of their application work in the fall of their senior year.

How do I begin?

Find out what goes into an application and begin collecting the materials you need. Create a folder for each college you are applying to. At the front of each folder, put a checklist of what you’ll need for the application and when it’s due.

How many colleges should I apply to?

Five to eight colleges is the recommended number. They should all be colleges you’d be happy to attend. It’s good to apply to some colleges that are a bit of a stretch for you and some that you feel will likely admit you. But most should feel like good, realistic matches.

Should I apply early?

It depends. If you are sure about which college you want to attend, early decision or early action might be the best choice for you. If you’re not sure, keep in mind that some early application plans require you to commit early. You may want to keep your options open.

Should I use an online or a paper application?

Check with the college to see which is preferred. Most colleges prefer online applications because they are easier to review and process — some even offer a discount in the application fee if you apply online. Applying online can also be more convenient for you — it’s easier to enter information and correct mistakes. Whichever method you choose, be sure to tell your school counselor where you have applied so your school transcript can be sent to the right colleges.

Should I send additional material?

It’s best if you can express everything about your qualifications and qualities in the materials requested. Colleges spend a great deal of time creating their applications to make sure they get all the information they need about each applicant. If you feel it’s absolutely necessary to send additional material, talk to your counselor about it.

Some arts programs may require portfolios or videos of performances. Check with the college to find out the best way to submit examples of your work.

Is it OK to use the same material on different applications?

Definitely. There’s no need to write a brand-new essay or personal statement for each application. Instead, devote your time to producing a great version of basic application parts.

What is the Common Application?

The Common Application is a standardized application used by more than 525 colleges. Instead of filling out eight different applications, you can simply fill out one and submit it to each college.

Be aware that you may need to submit additional or separate documents to some colleges. You also still need to pay individual application fees for each college.

Counseling News cont.

Should I apply to colleges if my admission-test scores or grades are below their published ranges?

Yes. The admission scores and grades that colleges show on their websites are averages or ranges — not cutoffs. There are students at every college who scored lower (and higher) than the numbers shown.

Remember that colleges consider many factors to get a more complete picture of you. For example, they look at the types of classes you take, your activities, recommendation letters, your essay and your overall character. Colleges are looking for all kinds of students with different talents, abilities and backgrounds. Admission test scores and grades are just two parts of that complete picture.

Should I even bother applying to colleges I don’t think I can afford?

Absolutely. Remember that after financial aid packages are determined, most students will pay far less than the "sticker price" listed on the college website. You don’t know if you can afford a college until after you apply and find out how much aid that college will offer you (if you’re accepted). Fill out the FAFSA anytime after October 1st. Even if the aid package the college offers is not enough, you have options. Many colleges are willing to work with students they have chosen for admission to ensure that those stu-dents can afford to attend. *https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/get-in/applying-101/applying-to-college-faq
