President’s Report 2019 - 2020 The Hobart Jazz Club just keeps going from strength to strength and I feel that is due to the dedication of our committee and our members. We are facing challenges the same as all clubs these days, reduced funding, not enough people to carry the flag but we always seem to come through.

We did all our usual things last year; including 11 club nights featuring 14 bands, our fundraiser featuring 3 bands, 3 festivals featuring roughly 65 groups adding up to around 300 musicians and jazz jam did 12 performances at the Duke supporting live music mentoring of our new up and coming musicians AND…and we are doing even more this year; with the biggest thing being Strategic planning. We need to discuss what we are doing now, where we are going in the future and with who. Over those years I have had many people from other jazz clubs contact me to ask about the different things we do; how do we make it work? I remind them that the club is only as good as the members and committee; the relationships you build with musicians, the learning institutions and the community. If we want to keep this social, artistic genre happening you must give in order to get back. So I invite people who want to have their say to our strategic meeting happening on Tuesday 31s March. Leave your name with Carol if you want to attend.

I hope we will continue to give you, our members, a good time…our monthly get togethers have been very successful and the variety interesting and diverse. We support both the youngsters and the experienced musos. Hot August Jazz just keeps on keeping on. Finding the money each year is always a challenge…but we manage. Thanks to Christine Bailey for her tireless efforts with Hot August. Taz Jazz is moving to Scamander this year; Scamander is under new management and it’s being renovated, management have been very helpful and friendly. It’s always good to catch up with others from across the state over this weekend. Please make sure you have booked. If you are a muso intending to play at Scamander please contact Viv Curtain. And Ross Jazz Jam is another opportunity to meet with likeminded folk. Just a short drive to meet once a year and enjoy fine food and music with good company. Ross is on This Sunday 15th March from 11am.

We are pleased to have the Tasmanian Conservatorium of music again supporting our Jazz Jam on the third Tuesday of every month at the Duke of Wellington. Free entry and meals and drinks available for purchase. All musicians are welcome; you can catch up with JJ on Facebook. Thanks to Brian Parkinson for his time and effort in organizing this. We have been putting together the history of the Hobart Jazz Club. We pretty much have it all finalized however we have not yet been successful with any grants to produce the work. If you have contacts or ideas on how to achieve this please talk to me.

It’s now 12 years we have been at Claremont RSL? Thanks to bar staff who look after our most important needs…and please give a round of applause for them, the RSL Club and the kitchen staff. At this point I also want to mention our volunteers, we always need an extra pair of hands, so to you who kindly offer help when we ask we are so grateful. Thank you.

We will continue with our mission is to “Promote Australian Jazz and Jazz in Australia”. From me to you – thank you thank you thank you…your support is invaluable. I know we will continue for a long time to come to have this social and musical interaction with people who have a common interest and pleasure: Jazz. Kaye Payne
