Holy Week is the oldest celebration in the life of the Christian Church. It consists of many services, all designed to help us reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Holy Week services begin with Maundy Thursday. Maundy is taken from the word mandatum, meaning law or command. So, during this season, focus on the command to love one another. Focus on the basin and the towel - the call to servanthood that Christ gives each of us. The call is to community! We will celebrate Maundy Thursday with our Liv- ing Last Supper Service. I can still hear the haunting question – “Is it I?” from the lips of all those in the upper room so long ago. This year we will add a Good Friday service at noon on Friday, April 19 th . This will be a simple service, in the darkness, to remind us that there was darkness on the face of the earth for three hours that day. Early Friday morning you can join me at the Sarasota Ministerial Asso- ciation’s Stations of the Cross walk in downtown Sarasota. What a great way to begin this holy day! Saturday is a quiet day as we reflect on Jesus in the tomb. Then we come to Easter Sunday. While the Resurrection is one of the central doctrines of our Christian faith, the resurrection does not stand by itself. The resurrection would not have happened had it not been for Good Friday and the cross. The resurrection is the visible sign that the work of Christ was finished, and it is the declar- ation that God asserts Jesus to be both Lord and Christ. He is risen! He is risen, indeed! The classes are from noon-1:00, in the Fellowship Hall. “Soups that you love” will be served, by the Fellowship Committee, at the beginning of each session.

Maundy Thursday: The Living Last Supper

The Living Last Supper will be performed in our Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m., on Maundy Thursday, April 18. This dramatization, inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting, imagines the inner thoughts of each disciple as he expresses the turmoil in his heart and mind. Music performed by the choir, and hymns are interspersed with the monologues.

The service concludes with communion served by the “disciples” themselves. Please plan to attend this inspiring service in preparation for Easter.

Presbyterian Women

From the Church Library Northminster is blessed to have a wonderful prayer team led by Jeanne Peters. However, not everyone is a prayer warrior. I can best relate to Jodi, one of the diverse characters in the Yada Yada Prayer Group books, when she says “Feels like I’m still in prayer Kindergarten.” This Christian fiction series not only offers insight on how to pray, but also has a powerful message about trusting in the Lord. All seven of these enjoyable books are available in the church library along with other books about prayer at 248.3 in the Non-fiction section.

One Great Hour of Sharing Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. The three programs (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Presbyter-ian Hunger Program, Self-Development of People) supported by One Great Hour of Sharing, all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope. Offerings for One Great Hour of Sharing will be received, in special OGHS envelopes, on April 14 and 21 (Palm Sunday and Easter.)

Treasure Chest is SPARCC’s upscale resale store, located at 1426 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. They accept men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories, small appliances, decorative items, dishes and flatware, furniture, art, antiques, and collecti-bles. All proceeds are used to support SPARCC’s programs and services. If you have items to donate, you may take them to the store. Call them at 941-953-7800 for more information.

As a result of the Kids Against Hunger meal-packing last month, we sup-plied 6,000 packed meals to Beth-El to distribute among the farmworkers and their families. We continue to support All

Faiths Food Bank with dona-tions of canned and boxed food items. Usually, there is a monthly pick up and Northminster strongly sup-ports this agency in helping to feed local families who are in need.

The Blessing Box contin-ues to be of good use for those who are in need of food for their body and the word for their soul. Bible Missions USA’s Gospel of John (in English and Spanish) is one of the items placed there for the taking for those in need.

Food items and bottled water are needed on a continuing basis to sup-port this ministry to our neighbors. Donations can be left in the red tub in the Nar-thex.

Bible Mission, USA Following the success of their translation of The Gos-pel of John into contempo-rary English and Spanish, Bible Mission, USA has translated The Gospel of Mark into conversational English and is beginning the Spanish translation.

The Great American Cleanup! The Great American Cleanup began as a litter cleanup campaign designed to beautify our en-vironment by creating cleaner public spaces through litter removal. Due to our location, the church property is continually collecting plastic bags and food wrappers/containers. We will clean up, along with our DeSot0 Acres neighbors, on Saturday, April 13, by picking up litter from our campus and parking lots. Grab your work gloves and a rake or grabber, and help spruce up the church property. Trash bags and recycling containers will be supplied.
