Jackie Robinson, a new two-part, four-hour documentary directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film tells the story of
Jack Roosevelt Robinson, who rose from humble origins to break baseball’s color barrier and waged
a fierce lifelong battle for first-class citizenship for all African Americans that transcends even his
remarkable athletic achievements.
ENCORE PRESENTATION
ENCORE PRESENTATION
“Jackie Robinson is the most important figure in our nation’s most important game,” said Ken Burns. “He gave us our first lasting progress in civil rights since the Civil War and, ever since I finished my Baseball series in 1994, I’ve been eager to make a stand-alone film about the life of this courageous American. There was so much more to say not only about Robinson’s barrier-breaking moment in 1947, but about how his upbringing shaped his intolerance for any form of discrimination and how after his baseball career, he spoke out tirelessly against racial injustice, even after his star had begun to dim.”
This six-part documentary series directed by Ken Burns and co-produced with his longtime colleague, Dayton Duncan, who also wrote the script,
is the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the
nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone.

Marian Kolodziej was on one of the first transports to enter Auschwitz. He was given number 432. He survived and never spoke of his experience for 50 years. After a serious stroke in 1993, he
began rehabilitation by doing pen and ink drawings depicting the experiences he and others endured in the concentration camp. These drawings, in their
skeletal detail, are a gripping depiction of the pain, death, and horrors of the camp. While most of the drawings represent the memories of a young man’s hellish experiences in Auschwitz, some tell stories
of small acts of kindness and dignity.
HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE
ENCORE PRESENTATION
Friday, April 15 @ 9:30PMThis is the true story of how Jewish prisoners
held in a concentration camp during World War II fought back against the Nazis — not with guns or
bombs — but through song, dance and laughter. In 2005, Lisa Peschel, now a theater studies professor
at the University of York, discovered a collection of cabaret scripts — "Laugh With Us"— originally written by four 20-year-old prisoners held in the Czech concentration camp of Terezin. Located
outside of Prague, Terezin effectively served as a way station, housing Jews before the Nazis sent them to Auschwitz and other death camps. In the face of this horrific darkness and uncertainty, the
Jewish prisoners wrote and enacted comedy shows in a make-shift cabaret. The poignant and inspiring documentary follows a modern-day theater troupe
from Minnesota as they travel to Terezin and attempt to re-stage the shows.
Samuel Willenberg, now 92 years old, is the last living survivor of the Treblinka death camp in
Nazi-occupied Poland. This documentary focuses on one man's personal odyssey to reflect the
enormity of the genocide inflicted upon Poland's 3.5 million Jews, at the time the world's largest Jewish community, and seven times greater than
the Jewish population of pre-war Germany. Samuel Willenberg's story is one of survival against
staggering odds and though heart-rending and horrifying, it is ultimately one of triumph.
Wednesday, April 20 @ 9PM
Friday, April 22 @ 10PM
Friday, April 29 @ 10PMThis program documents a project to preserve yellow
stars that were painted during the Holocaust on a synagogue exterior wall in Normandy, France. Intended
to serve as a testament to that terrible chapter of history and a reminder of the dangers of intolerance, the recent, tragic increase in anti-Semitism in France
gives this story current significance.
