Archdiocesan Priest Retirement Collection
The Archdiocese is truly blessed by the service of many holy
and dedicated priests, especially our retired priests, who have
served our Archdiocese so faithfully. We currently have over
fifty retired priests, many who continue to serve in our
Archdiocese in many ways.
The annual retirement collection is used to support the
medical and retirement expenses of these priests. Your
participation in this collection is a way to say “thank you” to our retired
Archdiocesan priests for their many years of service to us, the Church of the
Archdiocese of New Orleans. Your support will benefit the priests for many
years to come.

Third Sunday of Easter
“And it happened that, while he was with
them at table, he took bread, said the
blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.”
Luke 24:13-35
The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains what the
Church teaches, everything from abortion to worship. The book
reflects nearly 2000 years of Church teaching. Yet that is not how
we started. We find the original teaching of the Church in the
first reading today. Peter on Pentecost stood up before the
people of Jerusalem and said: ‘God sent Jesus to suffer and die.
Jesus rose from the dead so that all who believe in Him might
have eternal life.’ That is the kerygma or core of our faith.
Yet to believe in something is one thing. To put that belief
into action is another. We as Catholics manifest our faith in many
ways: prayer, fasting, private devotions, corporal and spiritual
works of mercy and the list goes on. However, the focal point of
our relationship with God comes when we gather with the faith
community for Mass.
Mass embodies our experience with God. We meet God in
Word and Sacrament. Our participation at Mass allows us to put
our faith into action. While the Mass has developed over the
centuries, the Mass remains consistent to the key elements
found in today’s gospel. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus
heard that Jesus has risen from the dead. They are confused.
Along comes Jesus unknown to them. He first shows how
everything that happened fulfilled Scripture (Liturgy of the Word).
Next he reveals Himself in the breaking of the bread (Liturgy of
the Eucharist). Finally they rush back in the dead of night to tell
others of what they experienced.
The Mass represents the most important way that we as
Catholics experience God in our lives. All too often we as
Catholics focus on the Eucharist and neglect the Word. Both
elements help us encounter God. But there is a third part of the
Mass that many people seem to forget. This part gives the Mass
its name. At the end the priest blesses the people and then tells
them to Go forth and proclaim the love of God. In the Latin Mass
the priest would use the words, ‘Ite, Missa Est’ or ‘Go! You are
sent.’ As Christians we gather as community to worship and pray.
Nourished by the Word of God and the Body and Blood of Christ
we go forth to proclaim the Good News. We want to tell others,
as the two disciples did, of how we have come to know Jesus.
Our Catholic faith began simply. People, moved by their
experience of knowing Jesus Christ, gathered together to worship
and pray. They broke bread together. Then they went out and
told others of Jesus and what He taught. As the centuries
progressed the Church found it necessary to elaborate on these
core teachings. What has not changed has been what we believe.
For 2000 years that has remained the same. It is proclaimed
every time we celebrate Mass when we affirm that “Christ has
died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” That is the message
proclaimed 2000 years ago and the message we proclaim today.
The challenge comes in professing Christ not just with our lips
but with our very being.

Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church
The road to Emmaus is one of my favorite Gospel stories
because it shows a Jesus that is masterful at reaching people.
First, when he comes upon those walking on the road, he asks
them what they are talking about and then asks them to
explain. How often are we too eager to just start talking at
people when we feel they need to hear what we have to say?
Jesus offers an invitation for them to share first. Allowing them
to share first opens them up for what Jesus will do next.
Second, Jesus takes time to interpret for them the words of the
prophets. He gave them their turn, and now it is his. Not only
wise, but a movement of respect. After a long walk, they invite
Jesus to stay with them and dine. Third and finally, Jesus breaks
bread with them and they are able to see that he is no ordinary
traveler. He is the risen One. He could have just told them who
he was, but allowing them by their experience to uncover who
he was had the greater impact.
Jesus demonstrated to us in these actions how to be gracious
and impactful when sharing the good news. If we are to be
good stewards and fruitful disciples then we must imitate him
in this regard. This Easter season let us practice the following:
1) Allow others first to share what they have to say. 2) Then be
willing to take the time to explain fully or to the best of our
ability our faith. And 3) help
others find a way to experience
firsthand the message you have
shared. No one can understand
love without witnessing love. In
this way, your words and deeds
will become a pathway to Jesus
for others.
