Rabbi Michael Ragozin
The Future of Shirat Hayam
Coming by Phillip Larkin
On longer evenings,
Light, chill and yellow,
Bathes the serene
Foreheads of houses.
A thrush sings,
Laurel-surrounded
In the deep bare garden,
Its fresh-peeled voice
Astonishing the brickwork.
It will be spring soon,
It will be spring soon —
And I, whose childhood
Is a forgotten boredom,
Feel like a child
Who comes on a scene
Of adult reconciling,
And can understand nothing
But the unusual laughter,
And starts to be happy.
Spring is approaching. Crocuses are flowering, new buds are appearing on trees, birds are chirping, and squirrels are frolicking. The earth is awakening from her dormant winter. And we are called to begin anew, seeking our own new burst of color and renewal of vigor.
Our calendar enshrines this source of spiritual energy in Passover, also known as Hag Ha-Aviv, the Festival of Spring. To the rebirth of the natural world, we add the layer of memory, recalling our slavery in Egypt and the miraculous birth of our people, as Pharaoh let us go and we emerged from the sea.
As we prepare for this foundational holiday, our question is: Who or what is our Pharaoh? Who or what oppresses us and inflicts us with hardships, holds us back and keeps us constricted?
Spring reminds us that yesterday is over, today is the only reality, and potential exists only in the future. But, to name our Pharaoh is no easy task. We see the challenges inherent in this self-reflection personal growth in Moses’ despair. After Moses’ initial visit to Pharaoh, life is made harsher for the Israelites with the collective punishment of no straw being issued, but the same quote of bricks. Moses is overcome with a sense of despair: Moses appealed to the Lord, saying, "The Israelites would not listen to me; how then should Pharaoh heed me, a man of impeded speech?" (Exodus 6:12)
Aware of the challenges, we ritualize this rite of rebirth, because though we may not succeed, not trying is even worse. And, we are emboldened by the confluence of nature and history. Not only is nature renewing herself at this moment, but also on this very day thousands of years ago, we, our people, were created anew, a free people with all the blessings and newfound responsibilities associated with our new status.
We will begin our Passover seders by affirming: At this moment we are slaves. Let us seize this opportunity to reflect on our personal Pharaoh, so that we can follow with conviction: Next year we shall be free.
Hag kasher v’sameach – wishing you a joyous and kosher Pesach,
Rabbi Michael

Dr. Howard Abrams, President
The Week That Was
We all have reasons that keep us connected to Congregation Shirat Hayam, and for me there have been a number of memorable, moving, spiritual and/or uplifting moments that have touched me and make me realize what a special place we have collectively built and how important it is to ensure that we all do everything we can to continue growing. In a seven day stretch last month, we witnessed four separate, yet connected, events that brought all of this home to me in a way that continues to make me shake my head in amazement and appreciation.
It started with what seemed to be a routine part of Katie Tassinari’s Bat Mitzvah when her great aunt presented her with a tallit (always nice), in fact one that they had purchased on a recent family trip to Israel (even nicer). It’s not usually a speaking moment, but Aunt Charlotte took the opportunity to pass on some incredibly moving and inspiring words that set the tone for the rest of the service. It was impossible not to be swept up in the love and connection of that moment.
The next day, we hosted a funeral service for Ralph Kaplan, attended by over 700 friends and family. From the ceremony led by our Rabbi and Cantor with an additional Masonic moment, through one eloquent speaker after another, we heard details of this remarkable man’s life and the incredible legacy he leaves behind. How fortunate we have been to have had him as part of our congregation, our Jewish community and yes, our world. Even with all that, I was unprepared to see his 10-year-old great- granddaughter stand up with her cousins and read a wonderful and touching tribute she composed herself, based on her survey of what each of them liked the best about Papa Ralph. There could not have been a better way to honor his memory.
My day wasn’t done. After another quick turnaround (kudos to Barri, Gus and crew), we hosted Rabbi Dan Gordis at an AIPAC event. I’m still trying to figure out how he managed to combine scholarship with humor and chutzpah to present one intriguing idea after another about Israel and Zionism in ways that I had never quite considered before. It is not an accident that he is such a sought after speaker—and here he was, in our very own sanctuary.
Lastly, the week ended with Shabbat Olam Poland, showcasing once again our special Cantor Elana and her talented musicians, followed by a wonderful meal and a moving presentation by Polish scholar Katka Reszke.
In my mind’s eye, these events constitute a highlight reel of who we are and want to continue to be. For those of you who shared any of these, you know what I mean. In case you missed them, don’t worry, I know that there’s more to come, so don’t miss out.
L’shalom,
Howie

Diane J. Levin, Executive Director
What’s Your Shirat Hayam Story?
In a recent feat of daring worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster, the Jewish Agency of Israel airlifted to safety 19 of the last remaining Jews in Yemen. These Yemenite Jews carried with them a Torah scroll estimated to be over a half-millennium old. This tale of escape to freedom from an inhospitable land is one compelling story among many in the history of the Jewish people.
That these refugees bore away with them this centuries-old scroll resonates deeply for anyone who loves Judaism. The Torah is of course the text of our sacred traditions, the source of Jewish law, and an enduring symbol of the Jewish people’s relationship with G-d.
Yet, in the simplest terms, Torah is our story – in fact, The Story. The collection of the greatest stories under heaven, Torah is our souls’ compass, speaking to us in a language that we understand from our youngest years. We all respond to stories; they move us, touch our hearts, fire our imaginations, and tap the wellspring of memory. Transmitting knowledge and important ideas, stories are the medium through which one generation passes its cultural wisdom to the next.
It is because of Torah that we are a nation of storytellers, as scholars have written and Jewish grandchildren can attest. Stories are bound up in our cultural DNA; it is our stories that make us uniquely Jewish. As storytellers, Jews are unsurpassed. So it is unsurprising that so many great writers – Saul Bellow, Philip Roth, Cynthia Ozick, Isaac Asimov, Rebecca Goldstein, Neil Gaiman to name a few – have been Jewish.
And we have the best stories – stories of heroic men and women who battle giants, wrestle angels, build arks to divine specifications, or speak with G-d. And we don’t just tell these stories like other people do, we transform them into participatory theatre, so that the telling of these stories blurs the line between performer and spectator. Last month we celebrated Purim, a glorious, freewheeling party, when we wear costumes and gather to hear the story of a Persian queen with a secret Jewish identity who halts a plot to kill her people. As this goes to press, we’re gearing up for Passover, the mother of all Jewish storytelling performances, when we join with family and friends to relive our liberation from Egyptian bondage, imagining it as if we were there ourselves to experience it. We’ll meet up 49 days later at Shavuot to recall the awe of receiving Torah when our ancestors huddled at the foot of Sinai as the mountain smoked and thunder cracked. Each year we re-enact these stories, never tiring of their retelling.
And we, this nation of imaginative storytellers, continue to invent new stories all the time. In fact, right here at CSH, we have plenty of great stories – more than 10 years in fact of creating stories together. This year we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary and with it our story of the merger of two synagogues, and the visionary leadership that united them to become the spiritually vibrant and inclusive, caring community we are today and a role model for other Jewish communities.
As a Jew, I’m irresistibly drawn to stories myself and love hearing them. So, inquiring minds want to know…what’s your Shirat Hayam story? Your story, or your family’s? Maybe it’s a simchah you celebrated here. Maybe it’s a new friend you made. Maybe it’s a d’var Torah that inspired you to take action, or a song that stirred your soul. If you have a Shirat story, I hope you’ll share it with me at [email protected]. We’d like to compile your stories for a future issue of the Wave.
Kol tuv,
Diane

Hillary Canner, Preschool DirectorSpring is here and the Center for Early Education was crazy with March Madness. We have celebrated themed weeks: Marching, Music and Masks; Tiaras, Tutus and Trains; Basketballs, Boats and Bananas; Pajamas, Penguins and Purim; and Whales, Wings and Wild Things. We paraded around in our Purim costumes and noshed on Hamantashen. Happy children are feeling festive and enjoying learning and play with their friends. We are looking forward to making our preparations for Pesach. We will be spring cleaning our classrooms and making sure that there are no crumbs of chametz.
We are planning our summer camp program, 9 Weeks of Wonder. We will have wading pools and sprinklers, and all kinds of water fun in the mornings. In the afternoons, we are lining up specialists to host, weeks of theater, rocket science, oceanographic studies and more. We will be studying the art of illustration, root systems and following and making maps. Each week, experts in the fields of Drama, Science and Art will help the children to learn through discovery. We are opening up our afternoon sessions to children in the K-2 grades. We have developed a fun and interesting program that will fill the hours of 3:00-6:00 pm with adventures and fun.
The year is flying by. It is hard to believe that we are looking at plans for the summer. Registration for the Preschool year 2016-2017 is open to the public. Our infant and toddler rooms are at capacity and we are planning to expand our toddler program into another room. There are a few spots in our Preschool that are still open, so do not delay. Well, for us, that means that you aren’t thinking about membership until our year is almost half-way through. We are here 365 (this year, 366) days a year and your membership helps us keep our doors open and provide the quality of programs and services you have become accustomed to. When your big white envelope comes in the mail on May 1, please open it.

Early Mystic Minyan - 8:45 am weekly
As it says in the Mishnah, the early mystics would gather together and sit for an hour before even attempting to formally engage in prayer. So too at CSH we offer the Early Mystic Minyan as an option for practitioners of meditation to come and sit as we begin to open up the space of our Sanctuary on Shabbat and of our hearts in the early quiet hours before the crowds arrive. It is a time to gather one’s self and one’s thoughts together through individual prayer without words, while Native American flute music is played.
Renewal Minyan - 8:45 - 9:50 am weekly
The Renewal Minyan is an attempted synthesis of keva – the traditional structure of tefillah (Jewish prayers) with kavanah – spiritual depth within the prayer itself. During the Renewal Minyan we are committed to traversing the Shabbat morning tefillot structure (Birkot HaShachar, P’seukei D’Zimrah, Shachrit), but not necessarily davening (praying) each and every prayer along the way. Our aim, again, is to strike a balance between breadth and depth, and within a one-hour period that is a fine balance, to be sure.
Traditional Minyan: Traditional Prayers 9:00 am weekly
The great thing about being Jewish is to be part of a tradition that is thousands of years old! But if you can’t read Hebrew, don’t know the words, or maybe can’t carry a tune, tradition can feel a little daunting. Come and join us in a safe, welcoming space to discover the beauty of traditional Jewish liturgy, prayer and song in a user-friendly format.

The CSH clothing drive has become a steady source of income for Shirat Hayam, while it benefits the community - local and globally. CSH is paid by the weight of the load, so those heavy shoes and drapes you want to get rid of... bring them over! In addition to clothing and shoes in any condition, you may include decorative pillows, backpacks, purses, belts, hats, bed linens and stuffed animals... it’s not just clothing.
The clothing collection bin is the beginning of a journey into the world of Textile Recycling. The vast majority goes to the used clothing market that supplies affordable clothing, shoes, accessories and household linens to both domestic and developing nations. What cannot be used as wearable clothing is turned into industrial wiping rags. If the material is unsuitable for wiping rags, it gets ground up into tiny fibers that are used for insulation, soundproofing and stuffing. The clothing, shoes and accessories are going to the very same markets that all other charities and clothing collectors go to. The Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Protection announced a public relations campaign to encourage people of Massachusetts to donate or recycle their clothing, shoes, household textiles and accessories.
So you see, none of it goes to waste. This program has a multi-tier benefit to us, our neighbors, and our global community. Thank you for contributing to its success. Please tell your friends that our bins are always open. Hopefully, spring cleaning is just around the corner. Remember CSH when cleaning out your closets!!
Thank you.

Chesed Committee Nancy Sarles, Chair
Shalom,
Please join our Chesed Committee to assist our congregation members at times, both urgent and ongoing, with the generous energy of our congregation.
Chesed is our opportunity to give and receive a helping hand. Please volunteer for as little as a few hours a year to care for the needs of our members.
Chesed “Reach Out” program is to assist in emergency situations with meals, rides, child care or Shiva. Chesed “Reach In” program is to address our members’ more ongoing needs such as a phone call, a visit, a meal, a ride to services, a new member buddy, new parent outreach, or simply being in touch and lending a helping hand.
I invite you to email me with your name, email address, and phone number where you can be called on to help.
As a Chesed Committee volunteer, there are no meetings. All communications are by email and phone, when needed.
Please call CSH if you have any needs we can help with.
With lovingkindness,
Nancy Sheena Sarles
