Given the opportunity to becomePresidentoftheAPA,Iwillcontinuetoworkdiligentlytopromotethewell-beingofourpatients,toadvocateforourmembersandAssociation,andtoenhancediversityofmemberswithAPApolicydevelopmentandleadership.AsoneofthefewNativeAmericanpsychiatrists in the APA, I realize the importance of diversityissueswithinourmembership.Wecontinue to facesignificantchanges in health care that can adversely affect our patientsandmembers. Iserve locallyontheBOTofthe Tulsa Medical Society and the Oklahoma State MedicalAssociation.AsamemberofthelegislativecounseloftheStateMedicalAssociation, Ihelpedachieve tort reform,parity, truth-in-advertising and limit expansion of scope of practice. 1. That the APA set the standards of psychiatric care. Thisgoal isprimarilyachieved throughAPAPracticeGuidelinesofwhichIhavebeenapartthroughouttheirdevelopment.
2. That the APA champions the needs of the private practitioner. This goal has been pursuedwithmotions onparityandcontinueswithmyAssemblymotionlastsummerthat the APA take actions to blunt the impact of priorauthorization.
3. That the APA’s major product, the DSMs, be comprehensive and be current. Ihavehadan impactoneachof thepastfourDSMs.MyrecentmotionasksthatthenexteditionoftheDSMbemorecomprehensivethanDSM-5
4. That the APA’s governance be inclusive of all important interests of psychiatrists.OncetheAssemblyonlyconsistedofDBrepresentatives.Residentrepresentationwasaddedwhen I was Speaker. Subsequently in the forefront ofrepresentation in the Assembly for minorities, especiallygetting recognition for women and gays. I moved therecognitionofallied/subspecialtyorganizations.
5. That the Area 3 Trustee increase the involvement of Area 3 Members by electronically polling the District Branches about issues before they are addressed by the Board.
