AsyourcurrentTreasurer,myfocushasbeentomaintainfiscalstrengthoftheAssociation,maintainoptimallong-termreservemanagement, maintain a transparent budget developmentprocess, and to monitor the Association’s strategic financialoperations to benefit the membership now and for futuregenerations of members. Given the opportunity to becomePresidentoftheAPA,Iwillcontinuetoworkdiligentlytopromotethewell-beingofourpatients,toadvocateforourmembersandAssociation,andtoenhancediversityofmemberswithAPApolicydevelopmentandleadership.AsoneofthefewNativeAmericanpsychiatrists in the APA, I realize the importance of diversityissueswithinourmembership.Wecontinue to facesignificantchanges in health care that can adversely affect our patientsandmembers. Together, wemust continue to work effectivelywiththepublic,politicalleaders,andthemediatopromotethewelfareofourpatients.Major themes if Ihave theprivilegeofservingasAPAPresidentwillincludethefollowing:• Continued advocacy to realize full parity and increasedfunding formentalhealthserviceswhich includesworkingwithnationalandstatepolicyleadersregardingthepotentialimpactofinsurancecompanymergers

Iunderstandcredentialingandscopeofpractice forpsychologists,viewissueswithalegalperspective,andstandupforminorityandmajorityviewpoints.IoffermyrelationshipswithAPAmembersacrossthecountry,avitalelementinmovingAPAforward.AsSpeaker, I representedeveryAreaandComponentof the APA and the position of Trustee-At-Large has similarresponsibility.AsSpeaker,IservedtwoyearsontheBOTwhichincludedayearontheExecutiveCommittee.WhileontheBOT,Iintroducedamotion,onbehalfofAEC,regardingMaintenanceofCertification.Thismotion,whichpassed, representedacentralconcern of APA members. I serve on CAGR and Co-chair theVA Caucus. I helped guide an Action Paper, which originatedfromamemberof theVACaucus, tobecomethefirstpieceoflegislationintroducedbyAPAinmanyyears.IhelpedmaketheVACaucus an example of howan individual APAmember hastheability to influenceAPApolicy. Iserve locallyontheBOTofthe Tulsa Medical Society and the Oklahoma State MedicalAssociation.AsamemberofthelegislativecounseloftheStateMedicalAssociation, Ihelpedachieve tort reform,parity, truth-in-advertising and limit expansion of scope of practice. I haverepresented Oklahoma in the AMA, helping to achieve betterrecognition for the role of psychiatry inmedicine. Sincefinishingtrainingtenyearsago, Ihaveworkedacrossclinicaland community settings through Massachusetts General Hospitaland held an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School.Mywork has focused on populationswith unmet needs, includingthe incarcerated, returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, andincapacitated persons. InaddressingnewissuesthatcometotheBoard,IwanttobuildonmypastAPAinitiatives:

1. That the APA set the standards of psychiatric care. Thisgoal isprimarilyachieved throughAPAPracticeGuidelinesofwhichIhavebeenapartthroughouttheirdevelopment.

2. That the APA champions the needs of the private practitioner. This goal has been pursuedwithmotions onparityandcontinueswithmyAssemblymotionlastsummerthat the APA take actions to blunt the impact of priorauthorization.

3. That the APA’s major product, the DSMs, be comprehensive and be current. Ihavehadan impactoneachof thepastfourDSMs.MyrecentmotionasksthatthenexteditionoftheDSMbemorecomprehensivethanDSM-5

4. That the APA’s governance be inclusive of all important interests of psychiatrists.OncetheAssemblyonlyconsistedofDBrepresentatives.Residentrepresentationwasaddedwhen I was Speaker. Subsequently in the forefront ofrepresentation in the Assembly for minorities, especiallygetting recognition for women and gays. I moved therecognitionofallied/subspecialtyorganizations.
