Assumption
“Compared to the planned travelers, flashpackers who travel without a specific plan will struggle more with the navigation
during a trip abroad.”
Project Goal
Develop an AR glasses based navigation service for flashpackers traveling abroad that 1) enables easy and effortless
wayfinding & 2) does not distract the travelers from their surroundings, but rather enable them to fully observe the
surroundings even during the wayfinding.
Research Goal
1. Develop a behavior pattern of the flashpackers’ information gathering for intra-city navigation and how they actually utilize the information when navigating in real-time using Google Map.
2. Locate the main problems they are facing when it comes to intra-city navigation.
3. Locate the problems the current Google Map service.
4. Develop a use pattern of smartphone during the trip, and locate the related problems.
Research Questions
1. How and when do the flashpackers gather information on the intra-city navigation? And what kind of intra-city navigation information do they search for?
2. What problems do they actually often face when intra-city navigating?
3. How do they utilize the current map application service, especially Google Map during the trip. And what is the problem of the current service?
4. How do they use smartphones during the trip, and what effect does this have on the immersing in the trip?
Pilot StudySemi-structured interview on broad questions on one’s spontaneous travel experience
Main Study1. Survey: Generalization and comparison between spontaneous and non-spontaneous traveler on their intra-city navigation and smartphone use.2. Think aloud: Specific real-time manipulation of Google Map and in-depth interview on their smartphone use during the trip
TriangulationInterview or Focus group interview : participants with various nationalities or cultural backgrounds

Survey Result
General
General: Reason for (not) planning
Free, accidental discovery Anxious, preparation, time and travel efficiency, fulfilling
General: Travel style
Flash packers tend to travel more frequently and alone, and travel less with family.
Travel purpose
Major purpose of traveling is to “relax”. Those who want to relax would be more stressed with fatigue coming from trouble in navigating, such as inefficient travel route (비효율적동선). Whereas, those who want
“adventure” might be less stressed with it.
Intra-city Navigation Information: When?
Flash packers significantly prepared less, meaning they are likely to have less pre-attained knowledge in intra-city navigation. 83% of them search for the navigation at the travel destination and especially 66% search at the
destination, before moving.
Information VS Actual DifficultyInformation gathering and planning Actual difficulties experienced
during intra-city navigation
Information VS Actual Difficulty
Commonly, unfamiliar transportation system, unfamiliar language, unfamiliar road view were the highest reason for their trouble in navigation.
Flash packers had more difficulty due to unfamiliar monetary unit and transportation cost, and less difficulty due to one’s capability of navigation compared to planned travelers.
Navigation During Travel Abroad: Major travel method
Flash packers significantly travel on foot more.
Navigation During Travel Abroad: Unplanned visit
Flash packers tend to more frequently make unplanned visits, thus also the unplanned navigations. Especially, 10% of them did so more than 7 times a day, whereas non of planned travelers did so. For ‘0 unplanned visit’ the
figure was the opposite.
Navigation During Travel Abroad: Main standard for route selection
Flash packers care less about the travel time and more about the preferred travel method, emotional aspects, and the first coming transportation compared to the planned travelers.
Map application experience during travel abroad
Travelers generally use map application during a trip.
Map application experience during travel abroad
Regardless of the type of the travel, ‘Google Map’ is used mostly.
Map application experience during travel abroad:Goal of the use
Map application is used not only to navigate but also to search information of specific place or to record the travel.
Map application experience during travel abroad:Goal of the use
Most travelers turn on their GPS function and wifi/data connection when using the map application.
Google map use during travel abroad
Smartphone use during the trip:Purpose related to the trip
Like the goal of the map use, except taking pictures, smartphone is used not only for navigation but also for information search, contact, or SNS activities regarding travel.
Smartphone use during the trip:Frequency of use
Smartphone use during the trip:Perceived negativeness of the use

6 participantsType A
1. Travels spontaneously without specific plans 2. Traveled abroad more than 2 times to more than 2 countries in the recent year
3. Usually uses Google map for traveling abroad
Type B1. Travels with specific plans and itinerary
2. Traveled abroad more than 2 times to more than 2 countries in the recent year3. Usually uses Google map for traveling abroad
Interview Questionnaire
Interview Goals and Constructions1. Goal : Deeper understanding of travel style and navigation, Google Map experience2. General travel style & Navigation
a. Travel styleb. Planning stylec. Transportation difficultiesd. Comparing navigation between familiar environment and new environmente. Smartphone usage during travel
3. Google Map experiencea. Usage of travel applications and Google Mapb. Conveniences and inconveniences of Google Map
Think aloud Questionnaire
Think aloud Goals
1. Goal : Overall goal of the think aloud questionnaire is to attain understandings of flashpackers’ behavior by watching interviewees how they use functions of Google Map during a trip abroad.
2. Why Google Map? : It is one of the most popular map app people use while traveling (according to our survey result)
3. Why Think aloud method? : We can see what buttons participants tap, what option they select, and all of the process. This helps us to further understand of what services flashpackers need.
Think aloud Questionnaire
Think aloud Constructions
1. We have two tasks given. One is about using Google map, in the situation a destination to visit is already selected. The other is about using Google map in the situation a destination to visit is not selected.
2. The former task asks participants to explain how they use Google Map while moving from their accommodations to a certain attraction.
3. The latter task asks participants to explain how they use Google Map while moving from one place to another freely, based on their travel experiences.
Think aloud Questionnaire
Think aloud Constructions
1. Two tasks will cover the same city, to control variables regarding cultural/regional differences.
2. Non-English-speaking countries are selected for the questions, which are Paris (France) and Osaka (Japan).
3. We will ask one of the two cities for the tasks, considering individuals’ travel experiences.
Think aloud Questionnaire
The first task : Destinations selected
1. The purpose of the first question is to watch participants’ process/standard of deciding transportationswhile using Google Map in their trip
2. The task asks how participants navigate use Google Map, from their accommodations to the certain attraction.
Think aloud Questionnaire
The second task : Destinations not selected
1. The purpose of the second question is to grasp participants’ overall style of navigating while using Google Map app
2. The task asks how participants navigate use Google Map based on their past experiences, freely from one place to another.
Interview Questionnaire
Interview Questionnaire example
1. General travel style & Navigationa. Do you have any preference in form of transportation?b. Were there any inconveniences/ difficulties while navigating on foot when traveling abroad?c. How much do you use your smartphone during travel?
2. Google Map Experiencea. What service/ product do you mostly use for travel?b. What was the most helpful/ useful part of Google Map?c. Were there any difficulties using Google Map?
Think aloud Questionnaire
Think aloud Questionnaire example : The First Task
1. Starting from your hotel room, you are prepared to move to your first destination. Using Google map please speak aloud how you moved from the hotel to your destination. During the task you must say why you selected such options, what buttons you pressed and why you did so. It is ok to make mistakes or take a long time. This is not a test for your skills but to figure out the usage and problems of Google map during travel
a. Accommodations : Paris Marie HouseThe first itinerary of the day : Museum of Orangerie
b. Accommodation : Osaka Marriott hotelThe first itinerary of the day : Osaka castle, Dotonbori
2. Follow-up Questionsa. What is your standard when selecting the route option?b. Was there any inconvenience/ difficulties while navigating through the destinations, in the past
experience of travel?
Think aloud Questionnaire
Think aloud Questionnaire example : The Second Task
1. For type A : Due to spontaneous travel you have not decided on the next destination. Choose where to go next and using Google Map find your way to your destination, and please be aware to speak aloud everything you are thinking.
2. For type B : Arriving at the tourist spot unfortunately it was closed today. Choose where to go next and using Google map finding your way to your destination, and please be aware to speak aloud everything you are thinking.
a. My current destination : Museum of Orangerieb. My current destination : Osaka castle, Dotonbori
3. Follow-up Questionsa. Do you plan out all the specific places to visit such as tourist attractions, food places, and
transportations(routes)? How often are your plans changed?
