SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND WeST AUSTRALIA STUDS
Ah’Kem Arabians SAAh’Kem Arabians is located on the Adelaide Plains at Two Wells, 45 minutes north of Adelaide, SA. The stud started over 40 years ago with the purchase of an Ennerdale bred unregistered Anglo mare, and went on to breed partbreds, Anglos and Arabian Warmbloods. The stud now only breeds purebreds, utilising the straight Egyptian stallion Simeon Sirach, purchased as a weanling from Marion Richmond. Sirach has matured into a magnificent strong bodied, big moving fairytale grey Arabian Stallion. The stud’s mares are by Anaza Bay Shahh, Desperado, Simeon Sohar and Zahriz (100% Crabbet by Sarafire). Sirach’s foals are extremely pleasing from a wide range of mares of different type. These foals exhibit good temperament, Arabian type and big movement inherited from Sirach. The aim of the stud is to breed horses that are instantly recognisable as Arabians, coupled with sound feet and legs, good temperament and ground-covering movement.
Alexandrina Farm SALocated in country South Australia, where the River Murray flows into Lake Alexandrina, we (Melanie and Darren Welsh) have a large property on which we run a dairy herd of 500 stud Holstein cows. Growing up I was fortunate to own a purebred mare. She set the bar very high for any horse wishing to follow in her footsteps. As my interest focused on dressage, horse ownership changed to the direction of the larger breeds. Ten years later and we were back in the possession of a yearling purebred Arabian – never to own any other breeds again! Falzon Four Claim is now successfully competing in dressage and the show ring. The addition last year of a beautiful Desperado filly and now the stunning stallion, Sadiks Psyche, we are a full house! All three horses will be under saddle in the years to come and will provide us with much enjoyment that comes with owning Arabians.
Alphalea Arabians WAEstablished in 1980 with daughters of Ambition in foal from Mulawa and later the colt, Kejome Kamil, a Crabbet/Polish blend including such horses as Abiram and Summer Haze. He was a successful show horse and sire of many supreme champion progeny and endurance horses. In 1989 I (Lusia Abbott) imported the pure Polish stallion, Vivo. His most notable son was Revel, an East Coast Championships Top Five, NSW State Reserve Champion and WA State Reserve Champion. Vivo died in 2002, Kamil in 2004 and Revel died in 2010. In 2005 I purchased a share in Australian Champion Stallion 2006, Sadiks Psyche, and he has left some wonderful progeny. It is with sadness but also pride that I announce the sale of Sadiks Psyche to a performance home with Melanie Welsh of South Australia, where he will begin a serious career in dressage. Congratulations! The remainder of the stud’s mares will now be dispersed.
Lanaryn Arabians WAMelanie and Taryn Bray of Lanaryn Arabians have been breeding quality Arabians and derivatives for over 20 years. We very recently added some new blood to our program with the acquisition of the stunning, black straight Egyptian colt by Al Kha-Zar (US), Fairview Jamil Al Kha-Zar. We have a small, exceptional group of mares that have been carefully selected. All are A class show winners and carry the bloodlines of today’s most inspirational stallions, El Shaklan, Padrons Psyche, WN Dasjmir and Born in the USA. In 2008 we registered the name Braylea Show Horses to distinguish our derivatives and show hacks from the purebreds. After breeding derivatives that have won at the highest levels, we have decided to concentrate on the Arabian Riding Pony. So now, we have secured three beautiful riding pony mares from the famed Silkwood Stud. We are situated in the picturesque Swan Valley close to wineries, cafés and restaurants.

Marbling Arabians WAThere are many reasons why we chose to bring the Arabian horse into our lives and we frequently hear stories that are heartfelt and inspiring. The conception of Mrs Nola Cameron’s Marbling Arabians, some 50 years ago, was no different. The ideal mare was Silver Fire and her family. The interesting, and probably the most important point is, although 50 years has passed, Mrs Cameron’s ideal has not. Qualities that have allowed the survival of the Arabian for thousands of years have not been compromised. Careful and selective breeding has accomplished and maintained generations of beautiful Arabians, all so alike, an achievement that is earning Mrs Cameron the reputation of one of the true Arabian breeders of the world today. Situated two hours south of the Perth airport, we always enjoy showing our horses to visitors.
Revlis Park Arabians SARevlis Park Arabians comprises Margaret Potts, and her daughters Carolyn and Josie, and they have owned Arabians since the 1960s. Their horses have competed in all facets of competition, including hacking, harness, endurance and pony club. Carolyn and Josie are both well-known National Panel Judges and have judged all around Australia, including the Australian Championships. The stud, whilst only small in numbers, is exceptionally high in quality with the twice-Australian Champion winner, Fames Presence, the stud’s current stallion. Previously, they stood the stallion Fad Bravo US. His daughter Tunamara Majeeda is an outstanding show mare with multiple supreme awards in SA. She will be bred in the 2012 season. The Fames Presence gelding, Haranni Fames Standing Ovation is an outstanding gelding that has been SA Horse of the Year for the past two years. He has many supreme awards to his name and will shortly be coming out under saddle.
Sheridan Park SATemperament is number one for Sheridan Park! We are a family run stud and we breed a few foals each year from select Egyptian bloodlines. We believe one Arabian should be able to compete in a variety of disciplines safely. We also want it all! An Arabian is not beautiful to us if it isn’t also correct in body, legs, feet, movement and temperament, as well as classical in type. We have been very spoilt in having Abraxas Amir US, he has shown us what a truly classical Arabian is. His progeny are now being broken in and are absolute delights under saddle, more reliable than horses that have been there and done that for years. They crave human attention. We have an incredible mare band based on straight Egyptian (SE) and Egyptian bloodlines. We have three SE stallions, eight SE mares, eight purebred mares as well as five derivative mares.
Sundale Stud WASundale Stud was founded in 1961 by the Late Mrs Wynne Young. During the 22 years Wynne was breeding horses under the Sundale prefix, she produced several very successful palominos and Arabian derivatives. Nowadays the stud is run by her daughter Jan Henley and grand daughters Natasha and Melissa Ellery. Sundale Stud’s focus is firmly on breeding quality Arabians and Arabian derivatives, who with trainable temperaments and natural athleticism have the ability to succeed at the highest level in halter and saddle classes, but also in the demanding sports of dressage and endurance. The commitment to this focus has been well rewarded over the past 15 years, with horses successfully competing on both the east and west coast and looks set to continue with the emergence of foals sired by Sundale’s resident sire Pembrooke Park Marquiss, who is not only stamping his authority in open competition, but producing quality offspring. PrometheusBorn in 1952 by Genghis Khan from Kassie. The NSW Department of Agriculture bred Prometheus and one of his major show wins was Supreme Champion at the Sydney Royal Show in 1958. He was the sire of 23 purebreds. Bob Hawkes of Currawong Stud brought him to South Australia in the late 1960s.
KaramaThis filly was born in 1965 and was sired by Count Manilla (GB) from Atalanta – making her a full sister to Attila and Pirouette. Karama made her home with Bob Hawkes (South Australia) and she produced ten foals. Probably the most well known would be Ilinya (by Prometheus) and Farreyna (by Tafadin). Farreyna was the dam of the stallion Baskeer (by Baskhan US) and Ilinya went to West Australia where she produced 12 foals for the Yamegi Stud, including Yamegi Winbye (by Yamegi Faris) – winner of the inaugural Dora Maclean Perpetual Trophy.
Banacek CascadeJudy Clemens brought Banacek Cascade to West Australia where he quickly made his mark on the show scene. He was shown successfully under saddle and also competed in endurance riding until injured. Affectionately called Banny, this stallion sired by Bandom from Selina Cascade was born in 1976 and lived until 2004. He sired 22 purebreds and many excelled in the endurance field.
MalikaMalika came from the wonderful family of Crystal Fire (GB) and Our Queen. This unassuming little mare was brought to West Australia by Doug Wilkerson and when the occasion arose, was promptly bought by Jean Muir for her Fawley Stud. Malika lived to the grand age of 30 and along the way she produced nine foals – three fillies and six colts. Seven of Malika’s foals were sired by Sahib (Count Manilla GB x Scherzade GB) and Jean retained the three fillies sired by him. The Crystal Fire action was very evident in this mare. AHN

Jodie LuckLocation: Birdwood, SA.Occupation: Horse Stud Manager and Owner.Stud: Almazaan Stud (2009). Your first Arabian horse? Purebred gelding Rrampage (Espakhan x Mirrigen Kara). A true character, he was extremely smart and taught me plenty. What bloodlines are your Arabians? A mix of bloodlines. I look for excellent conformation and balance and then this relationship to movement in the horse. Then I check bloodlines regarding inherited performance lines and strength of type. My aim is to breed excellent riding horses. How many Arabians do you own? Four purebreds, ten derivatives. What do you do with your Arabians? We are heavily involved in endurance riding and our breeding program aims to produce top quality endurance horses. We strongly believe in producing a versatile horse with the conformation, movement and temperament to master a variety of disciplines. Favourite horse activity? I love all aspects including riding, watching the horses at play, especially the foals, or working one-on-one with them in the round yard, so rewarding. Favourite non-horse activity? Spending time with my family, gardening and reading. Most treasured horse related possession? The memories and experiences I have had with my horses over the years. Irreplaceable! Favourite SA horse event? 2011 Tom Quilty Gold Cup held at Mt Pleasant. Goals for the future? To ride a homebred horse for a Quilty Buckle. Breeding horses that can achieve many years of competing at whatever discipline chosen is a foundation goal for the stud. What’s on your bucket list? Would love to hike the Kakoda Track, Papua New Guinea.
Tammy SwannLocation: Baker’s Hill, WA.Occupation: Stud Manager, Farm Assistant. Stud: Taju Arabians, daughter stud of Ruoak Arabians (2001).
Your first Arabian horse? Partbred Arabian stallion Taju Koffi and Crème (by Kuzrum – bred by grandmother of Ruoak Arabians), from my station mare, M’selle. He has been an endurance horse, sire of quality, strong horses with amazing temperaments. What bloodlines are your Arabians? Egyptian and Crabbet with a touch of Polish in the later years. How many Arabians do you own? Fifteen purebreds, 12 derivatives. What do you do with your Arabians? Endurance, working farm horses and general pleasure plus we like to show for education. We breed stock for other people to enjoy. Favourite horse activity? Watching the foals grow and handling them, so rewarding. Favourite non-horse activity? Spending time on our station on the Nullabour, working cattle and enjoying open spaces. Most treasured horse related possession? Sixty plus horses! Favourite WA horse event? State Endurance Championships. Goals for the future? Ride one of our own horses to win a Quilty. I know they can do it! What’s on your bucket list? A trip through the Rockies and up through Canada and a cruise into Alaska.
Karen BruntLocation: Hillier, SA.Occupation: Real Estate Agent and Property Manager.Stud: Odyssey Arabians (1987). Your first Arabian horse? Woodlyn Shari, Arabian mare purchased in 1984, mainly Crabbet breeding. She produced our first palomino stallion, Odyssey Golden Sundance, and he features in the pedigrees of our palomino derivatives. What bloodlines are your Arabians? Our derivatives are predominantly Crabbet/English breeding. A couple of purebred broodmares by Ralvon Progress. My current interest is breeding straight Egyptians and we are pleased with our straight Egyptian stallion, Tarong Shazeer. How many Arabians do you own? Ten, with three foals due next season. What do you do with your Arabians? We breed, show and sell our stock. Favourite horse activity? Exhibiting our stallions and foals at shows. My favourite show is the Australian Championships. Favourite non-horse activity? Currently working on an interior design course, with an interest in property development and renovation.
Most treasured horse related possession? Australian Champion trophy awarded to our homebred stallion, Odyssey Golden Legend. Favourite SA horse event? All breeds shows, particularly outdoor events where my horses’ palomino colour shines! Goals for the future? Develop a straight Egyptian herd. We are always trying to breed more beautiful palomino derivatives. What’s on your bucket list? Work on inner city developments, and travel to some of the international Arabian shows!
Kathi McdonaldLocation: Coblinine, via Katanning, WA.Occupation: Stay at Home Mum for the moment!Stud: Catrin Arabians (2004). Your first Arabian horse? Ros Skybird (Chip Chase Nile Consort x Ros Starfire), a gift from my aunt in 1996. She was a major show winner in WA in her youth and my introduction to Arabians and showing and breeding. She was a beautiful mare in looks and temperament and the dam of the first foal I bred. Sadly she was lost to colic before giving us a daughter to go on with, something I regret. What bloodlines are your Arabians? All members of the Naadirah family, blended with Egyptian and El Shaklan bloodlines. How many Arabians do you own? Six purebreds. What do you do with your Arabians? Enjoy them! We like to show in both halter and saddle, and I have just started competing in dressage with my stallion. I am thinking about tackling a social endurance ride or two this year. Favourite horse activity? Competing and socialising at Arabian shows. Teaching the children about horses. We will be starting pony club this year with my young son, Alec. Favourite non-horse activity? Spending time with my children and having some peace and quiet “me” time to read or go shopping. Most treasured horse related possession? My signed copy of ‘Naadirah – the Arabian Dream’, Lady Wentworth’s ‘The Authentic Arabian’. Favourite WA horse event? WA Arabian State Championships. Goals for the future? Breed an Australian Champion in halter and under saddle, and introduce a small Anglo and Arabian Warmblood breeding program to the stud. What’s on your bucket list? World Championships in Paris, and visit New Zealand, Canada and Great Britain. AHN
