Lesson 3: What is Piety?

But the (behavior of) righteousness is:

اب  ْك ال  الئكة و  اآلخر وال و ْي ال من آمن بالله وين  لاو

(That of a person) who believes in Allah, the Day

of Judgment, the angels, the divine books and the

Prophets.

And gives his wealth due to His (Allah’s) love to:

(poor) relatives, orphans, poor, (needy) traveler,

those who ask for financial help, and those is

slavery.

َقام الصالة وآتى الزكاة  .And establish the prayer and pay the Zakatو

ذا عاهدوا  وفون بعهدهم  And (the people) who fulfill their responsibilitiesوالwhen they enter into a contract

Those who are firm and patient during suffering,

adversity and at the time of war.

قون  ت  ك هم ال و ك اذين صدقوا و These are the people who are truthful and these areوthe people who are righteous (and pious).

Have you noted that all understood and implied words are not described in clear words in the Arabic

language. That’s why we have added certain understood words in the translation which are shown in

brackets. In the Classical Arabic, understanding the implied words or sentences is left at the intellect of 

the addressee. In ancient times, people did not like to listen every understood word and the language was

considered ineloquent if too many words were used.

His throne (control of universe) is more vast than

the heavens and the earth. Guarding of both of

them (heavens and earth) does not fatigues Him.He is the exalted, the supreme.

distinctive from error.

Whoever renounces the forces of evil and believes

in Allah, has grasped the firm hand-hold which will

never break.

And Allah hears all and knows all.

out of darkness and leads them into the light.

Evil forces are the guardians of those who do not

believe. They bring them out of the light and lead

them into the darkness.

Hisham described the Hadith to us, (he

derived it) from his father, (his father

derived it) from Hakeem Bin Hizam رضى اهللا

'،ىلفسلا د ر من ال ا خي د العل .'Upper hand is better than the lower handال

،ى ر الصدقة عن ظهر غ .The best charity is that a person remainsrich after giving charityوخي

One who avoids begging, Allah protects

him.

ه اهللا  غ غن ي الزكوة.')،ومن يست 1361(And the one who wants to be financiallyبخارى ،كتاب independent, Allah makes him independent.

In this Hadith, the Prophet   وسلوآلعلياصلى motivated rich people to spend in Allah’s way. He also

stirred poor people to avoid begging and asked them to make a target to become financially independent.

The Prophet asked to start charity from kith and kin. If a person wants to spend on poor, he should start it

from his poor relatives. A person should not give all his wealth to poor because it will make him poor.

Think about it!

• Why this Hadith is still authentic although the wordعن 

is used in its  سند

? Actually the narrators are

reliable people. They are not famous for the habit of hiding names.

• What is the meaning of 'upper hand' and 'lower hand'?

Both Muhammad Bin Muthanna and

Muhammad Bin Bashar described this

Hadith to us: (in the words of Ibn

Muthanna)

:Muhammad Bin Ja’far described thisحدثنا مح د بن جعفر Hadith to us.

 بن  ة عن منصور ،عن إبراهيم ،عن ه ا حدثنا شع

الحارث؛

Shu’ba described this Hadith to us, (he

derived it) from Mansoor, (he derived it)

from Ibraheem, (he derived it) fromHammam Bin Al-Harith:

..That a man praised Uthmaanأن رجال جعل ي دح عث ان 

 قداد  ع د ال ه.ف ت وكان رجال.فجثا على رك.ضخ ا

Miqdad proceeded, he bent his knees (to

pick pebbles, although) he was a fat man.

.Then he put these pebbles on his face.

 ان  ه عث إن رسول اهللا:ما شأنك؟ فقا:فقال :صلى اهللا عليه وسلم قال

Uthman said to him, 'What happened to

you?' He said, 'Verily, Allah’s Prophet صلى

اهللا عليه وسلم said.'

'احين ،فاحثوا في وجوههم التراب د لا م . 'إذا رأي

)،قئاقرلا و دهزلا باتك ،ملسم3002(

'When you see people who praise, pour dust

upon their faces.'

Miqdad Bin Aswad   عنارضى was one of great companions of the Prophet   وسلوآلعلياصلى . He is one

of the earliest converts to Islam. Probably, the guy may had praised Caliph Uthman  عنارضى

to get

some benefit. In Islam, praising the rulers in front of them to get some benefit is highly discouraged.

Miqdad did so to discourage that person. In that Bedouin society, expressing hatred in this way was a

normal thing.

Think about it!• Why praising someone is discouraged in this Hadith?

• What type of praise is forbidden?
