Robust vs. Resilient

How do you contemplate building something robust enough to withstand 10,000 years of unknowns?

Robust: Solid, immobile, strong, un-bending, …

vs.

Resilient: Adaptable, flexible, fault tolerant, …

Is this relevant to Enterprise Software or PLM ?

Page 16: Aras ACE Conference 2013 PLM Keynote by Peter Schroer

Resilient PLM

The 10 year PLM system Transparent – no hidden meaning, secret decoder ring. If

you found a DB without the software 10 years from now, could you still extract your product structure / data

Evolvable – nothing platform specific, because we don’t know what Microsoft, Google, Oracle (and the vendors that don’t exist yet) will be doing 10 years from now

Adaptable – because company processes will surely change in the next 10 years

Resilient PLMAras Report Card – the 10 Year PLM System

Already been 13 years, and we did pretty well…

Netscape IE-6,7,8,9 and 10 FF Mobile Java Windows NT/2000/2008/2012 Cloud Progress DB Oracle SQL Server Transparent data model, vaulting files without

hashing the contents

and AML …

Resilient PLMAras Report Card – the 10 Year PLM System

AML was / is the Resilient secret sauce. Backward compatible, consistent syntax, change tolerant,

Proof Point: US Army Arsenal – 13 years with Aras Innovator, 9 major versions, and the integrations / customizations made in the beginning still just work. AML queries from 2000 will still run today against the latest version Innovator server.

Resilient PLM

So why bring this up now? What does the Next 10 Years look like for your PLM

project? Hardware to support end-user count growth

Vault file storage space requirements

What-if more remote sites are added, is the network ready

New functionality, new departments, new workflows,…

Does PLM survive a management change? Acquisition?

What-if if the CAD software is changed? ERP is changed?

Are we designing and deploying in way that is resilient?

Resilient PLM

ACE 2013 – let’s talk about what Resilient PLM means, and how we do it right

As we deploy PLM together; focus on Phase 1 success, but we better have a plan for Phases 2 … N

DOMORE

The Aras approach:

“Do More… with More”

Page 22: Aras ACE Conference 2013 PLM Keynote by Peter Schroer

aras.comCopyright © 2013 Aras. All Rights Reserved. Slide 22

DOMOREWHY ?External drivers, “Do More” is the only reasonable response to global competition

Your competitors are innovating processes

Your dependency on global suppliers is increasing

Global economy is in flux

Joe Barkai will expand on this in the next session

Page 23: Aras ACE Conference 2013 PLM Keynote by Peter Schroer

aras.comCopyright © 2013 Aras. All Rights Reserved. Slide 23

DOMOREWHY ?Internal drivers, “Do More” is a critical call to action Don’t rest on your laurels; management has a short

memory: “what have you done lately” The Phase 1 go-live party hasn’t even finished and users

are asking for enhancements User expectations accelerate with success If you don’t provide the solution, users will find their

own work-arounds

Page 24: Aras ACE Conference 2013 PLM Keynote by Peter Schroer

DOMOREHOW ? Aras enables Do More No IT limitations – scalable architecture leverages

distribution, replication, and the power of the Cloud Rapidly expanding suite of solutions from Community Community lead – not limited by 1 vendor’s vision or

ability to deliver Open architecture, aligned with standards, easier to

integrate other software and processes

DOMOREWHAT ? Examples of non-traditional PLM approaches

Xerox – Compliance

Sonnax – Incoming Inspection

Woodbridge – Sales Quotes

Getrag – ALM

Honda – Supply Chain Coordination

GE – MBOM and Manufacturing applications
