ARC 2615 INTERNSHIP REPORT
Throughout this 8 weeks of internship fulfilling my work responsibilities at
Arkitek JFN Sdn. Bhd., I have gained a wealth of knowledge regarding the stages
of planning or building submissions, a tip or two regarding technical requirements
related to authorities, and also experienced the flow of work in an architecture firm.
During my time here, I have been involved in a total of 2 main projects and
also been helping out colleagues with other few projects with various stages.
Main projects:
(i) Interior exhibition design for an intermediate double storey traditional
heritage shophouse at 59, China Street.
(ii) Renovation and extension work of a 2 storey intermediate terrace house
at Lot 2679, No 610, Kenyalang Park.
Side projects:
(i) ArcAsia Awards presentation drawings and report/
(ii) Proposed Medium Cost Housing Development at Lot 2814 Kota
Samarahan Division - Terrace Houses & Low Cost Apartments.
(iii) Proposed Pejabat Residen & Daerah Sundar, Lawas, Limbang Division.
(iv) Renovation and refurbishment work for Sarawak Tourism Board office at
Kuching Plaza.
(v) Proposed housing / lodging facility at Lot 734 Santubong.
In the first few weeks, I was tasked with producing design options for the
interior layout and design of the interior spaces for the double storey
intermediate heritage shophouse. This stepping stone project was given out
and introduced to me during my first office internal briefing with Ar. Mike Boon.
Before entering any sort of design processes, I was first tasked to study and
analysis the preliminary 3D model of the shophouse and also study and
investigate its existing as built drawings in order to familiarize myself with the
interior spaces and structure of the building. Investigation and further deeper
understanding of the building was also carried out through photographic
investigation and research of the existing building taken on site.
Once this is executed, I attended a numerous amount of site visit in order to
actually witness and experience the overall ambiance and what the interior
space of the shophouse has to offer. Apart from that, I was also tasked into
producing a systematic and proper inventory list in order to document all the
existing items and exhibits the client has and intend to exhibit. This includes
documenting it in terms of dimensions, specifications, images and also its
current condition. Client-consultant meeting was also attended in order to
familiarize myself with the client and also a typical CCM procedure.
For the second main project which I was assigned to, I was tasked to study
and analyse existing as built drawings of a 1960s-1970s double storey
intermediate terrace house. This includes studying imperial scaled drawings
which includes cadastral plans, site and locality plans, drawing plans, sections,
elevations and also detailed drawings and detail schedule.
Once doing so, I was tasked to reproduce the drawings into proper technical
AutoCAD drawings using the given and stated dimension and specification
accordingly. Using the completed AutoCAD drawings, I was then assigned to
transfer them into SketchUp and reconstructing the entire building into a 3D
model and thus can be reproduce into drawings and clearer sections.
Along the way apart from these 2 main projects, I was also tasked to help
out other colleagues with other different projects which includes coloring of
submission drawings for the authorities, helping out with detail modelling and
also SPA drawing submission. Besides, I also had the great opportunity to
partake in submitting drawings two different council authorities in Kuching
which are MBKS (Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan) and DBKU (Dewan
Bandaraya Kuching Utara) respectively in order to introduce and familiarize
myself with submission drawings and procedures.
What I have learned most of all throughout this 8 weeks period of internship
aside from technicalities and procedures of an architectural firm is that there is
so much more to a building than appearances and aesthetics. There are many
minute details which I tend to overlook during my academical period when
designing, such as good details and design choices that have become a norm
that it would go by unnoticed by other people who are not in this field, but
should not be so the case for an architect. The ability and skills of being
observant is something that I hope to be able to obtain, acquire and master
someday so I may better myself in order to become a professional architect.
