Notes from the Road Down deep, I knew I shouldn’t have asked my bread machine to knead that chilled blob I’d stuck in the fridge to slow its rising. First it strained. Then it stopped. Then the drive belt broke. But if it can be taken apart, someone probably has, and posted the video on YouTube. A $6.31 charge and a few days later, I had a new belt in my hands and a Sunbeam model 5891 spread across the coffee table. It went back together easily enough, though I dearly missed the long-shafted Phillips I have in Georgia while driving 15 little screws deep in its guts. Finally just one was left: a ma- chine screw that secures the heating element to a ceramic insulator. And no variation of angle, no change of force, could get its threads started. There’s supposed to be a nut back there, and it had slipped. Contemplating the pain of taking it all apart again, I asked myself, “Does the element really need the sup- port?” Nah. No force could come at it to press it up or down. Elements in some electric ovens sit cantilevered out for decades, and they’re okay. Three good words to live by are “do it right,” though, and it seemed I heard them as I hesi- tated, short-shafted screwdriver in hand. Then I bent to the task. I wish knowing what to do to make a congregation thrive were as clear as repairing a bread machine. I wish it were as easy. But if we don’t know what to do, we should try to find out. (Maybe there’s a video!) If it takes a long time, if it stretches us, if it scares us, still … for the Risen One who breaks bread with us … let’s do it right. What I’m listening to: the Band of Heathens’ reincarnation of Ray Charles’s rendition of “America the Beau- tiful” ( https://soundcloud.com/thebandofheathens/10-america-the-beautiful ). I still believe, Lord; I still believe, sis- ters and brothers; I still believe, O my soul. Doug

Notes from the Road

Down deep, I knew I shouldn’t have asked my bread machine to knead that chilled blob I’d stuck in the fridge to slow its rising. First it strained. Then it stopped. Then the drive belt broke. But if it can be taken apart, someone probably has, and posted the video on YouTube. And no variation of angle, no change of force, could get its threads started. There’s supposed to be a nut back there, and it had slipped. Contemplating the pain of taking it all apart again, I asked myself, “Does the element really need the sup-port?” Nah. No force could come at it to press it up or down. Elements in some electric ovens sit cantilevered out for decades, and they’re okay. Sunday School July 8 The Middle Room class will discuss Chapter 10 (p. 170), “#Interference”, in David Rice’s book, #Gospel. Repetition. Repetition. Repetition. This Sunday, the “Conversations That Matter” group will discuss chapter 10 of Celeste Headlee’s We Need to Talk: How to Have Conversations That Matter. Spoiler: she sug-gests that repetition generally does more harm than good. Do we agree? Ours is a conversation someone may join at any time, so please know you’re welcome.

Golden Boys will meet at 8am on Tuesday at My Daddy’s Cheesecake. Please join us for breakfast & conversation.

Believe it or not, it’s time to sign up to serve in AUGUST!! Please check out the schedule & see where you fit.

Please send all email to the church to

[email protected] . Please do not use the outlook address. Thank you.

From the Search Committee We have continued to have a great deal of feedback on the congregational profile questions, and we thank you so much for your participation. We have one last set of ques-tions for everyone, and they will be in the bulletin inset on Sunday, July 8. How do we make decisions and carry them out as a congregation? How are we relevant to the community, Disciples mission, and the world? How do we show God’s healing, welcoming, reconciling presence in the world? Please prayerfully consider these questions. Just as a reminder, we will compile responses to answer these questions on the congregational profile, and the congregational profile is any prospective minister’s first informa-tion he or she would receive about ARCC. That is why we want input on answering these questions, to make sure our responses truly reflect who we are. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and perspectives with us. We appreciate and value your input.

All are invited to Movie Night at ARCC on Wednesday, July 18, at 6:30pm in the

sanctuary, where “Paul, Apostle to Christ” will be shown. The film deals with the

last days of Paul in prison through the eyes of his friend, Luke. While visiting with

Paul in Rome, Luke decides to write another book; one that details the beginning of

“The Way” and the birth of what will come to be known as the Christian Church.

Their faith challenged an empire, but their words changed the world.

After watching the movie, we’ll enjoy some discussion about the movie.

Movie popcorn and lemonade will be available.
