Construction is not just about building sites, it’s about building a bigger picture: the planning, coordination, and control of a project from inception to delivery.

In this program, you will examine the principles, techniques and regulations of the building and construction industry for all types of medium-rise and wide-span buildings, including buildings up to 25 metres high.

This program incorporates aspects of hands-on work and project-based learning, including industry speakers and e-learning. You will experience many aspects of building projects and understand how these relate to each other.

What You Will Study

You will learn about all aspects of the building industry, including project planning and management, project estimating, materials use, structural properties, work health and safety requirements, cost control and office management/administration. Sustainable construction methods are also covered.

You will go on site excursions to gain hands-on experience in the field. This will include visits to residential projects, commercial construction projects and industrial complexes.

You will also develop skills in computer programs such as Microsoft Project and various data and spreadsheet applications.

Industry Connections

This program emphasises project-based learning where your assessment will be based on either real or simulated industry issues.

A number of courses include site visits, field exercises and workshops.

After graduating, you may further your studies with a customised training plan (work-integrated learning).

Career

Upon graduation, you will be eligible for employment at the middle management level in the building industry in areas such as building construction supervision and management, estimating, purchasing, contracts administration or other related fields. You may find work on a building site or in a head office environment. In time, you may start your own business. Completing the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) gives you a stronger chance of gaining employment in the building industry.

Professional Recognition

Once you’ve completed this program, and have at least three years’ experience in the building industry, you can apply to the Building Commission to become a Registered Building Practitioner.

Student Profile

“I’d heard great things about RMIT’s building and construction programs from past students due to the study environment and hands-on focus. So when it came time for me to find somewhere to study my longtime passion for building and construction, I knew where to go.

“My program is great because it’s designed to teach the skills students need to get registration with the Building Practitioners Board. It pushes us to excel but also encourages us to explore different aspects of building and construction and develop our skills and knowledge.

“My favourite subject has probably been Identify Services Layout. As part of that course, we got to go out to real work sites and observe everything that was going on. It was an interesting and fun way to get the knowledge and get out of the classroom.

“The highlight has definitely been the people you get to meet as part of your program. Working with people who share your passions makes the learning process even better.

“My plan for the next three years is to start working and gain all of the experience possible within the construction industry, hopefully through working for a commercial builder, as my ultimate goal is to start up my own commercial building company.

“I love what I do because, in the end, I am sure that all the hard work will pay off and I will be exactly where I want, doing what I love.”

“I would highly recommend that anyone interested in undertaking construction management should just go for it, especially women. The under-representation of women exists across jobs and also within leadership positions. It is for these reasons that it is so important that women become involved in the industry, starting with an education in construction.”

This program provides you with a high level of applied knowledge in the broader property profession and enables you to specialise in all the subsets within property and valuation.

The majority of individual and company wealth is made or held in property assets. Having a good understanding of property fundamentals including valuation, management, development and investment, is critical to having a successful career in the property industry.

You will develop your competency to identify, analyse and resolve problems relating to business in general, and property and valuation in particular. The word ‘property’ is used to link a number of related professions, all of which deal directly with the built environment.

Over four decades of experience in property education has given RMIT an ability to gauge what is occurring within property professions. The skills that employers and professional bodies seek are well reflected within this program. Staff members are heavily involved with the professional bodies, and regularly liaise with industry and employers.

As a property professional you will understand the features and characteristics of the diverse range of property types and property investment instruments.

What You Will Study

You will undertake 28 property-related courses within a broad business and management context, offering you a breadth of variety and specialisation of knowledge. You will develop an understanding of the property profession, as well as the ability to identify, analyse and resolve problems relating to all aspects of the property profession.

Understand the influences that affect the way we live, work, play and commute involved in creating sustainable, liveable cities and regions.

Urban and regional planning is more than just creating physical environments – it’s a way of sustainably changing and shaping the world.

This program is suitable for anyone with a passion for geography, history, economics, politics or environmental studies. You will engage in key areas of planning, including land use, transport, urban renewal, conservation and policy.

What You Will Study

Year One

By studying Australian society, politics and economics you will better understand the foundations of urban and regional planning. You will also cover the origins and development of planning principles and practices.

Year Two

You will focus on contemporary planning policies together with social science research methods, planning law, urban design and climate change. Many students opt to study overseas for a semester in the second year.

Year Three

You can specialise in different areas of practice: rural, transport and social planning, and planning at local government level.

Year Four

In your final year you will undertake a 60-day, paid work placement as well as studies in urban design, property development, structure planning and planning theory. You will finish by writing either an individual thesis or a major planning report in a small group on a chosen topic.

Industry Connections

In fourth year, you will undertake 60 days of paid employment, chosen from a list of position descriptions from potential employers.

Placements include working in strategic planning, statutory planning and social planning in local or state government or the private sector. Placements often lead to full-time work after graduation.

This program pioneered formal work placements in the industry. Many employers now actively seek out RMIT planning students to fill their work placement vacancies.

Career

Urban and regional planning graduates readily secure jobs and have ample opportunity for early career promotions. More than 80% of graduates find full-time employment within the field, with a median starting salary of $50,000 (Source: McCrindle Research). Many start in local government or find work with private sector planning consultancies and property developers.

Graduates build careers locally and overseas in areas such as urban design, consulting, property development, community health and welfare, housing and transport planning.

The PIA has mutual recognition of membership status with the New Zealand Planning Institute (NZPI) and the Canadian Institute of Planners/Institut Canadien des Urbanistes (CIP).

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP)

A Commonwealth supported place is a place at university where the tuition fee is jointly paid by you and the Australian Government. The tuition fees vary according to each program and are adjusted on an annual basis. Visit www.rmit.edu.au/programs/fees for more information.

FEE-HELP
