Syllabus The law, contracts and agreements as they relate to the practice of architecture, conditions of engagement, professional fees, management of commissions and an understanding of the principles of successful management in architectural offices and organisations including: financial management, risks, marketing, workplace relations and quality assurance. This unit also incorporates a fieldwork component.

Introduction Welcome to Professional Practice 2!  This unit was designed as part of the conclusion to your Masters degree alongside your dissertation - to prepare you for practice, by encapsulating everything that you have cultivated over the years and mapping it against the diversity of architectural office practices and the delineated aspects of office structure and organisation.  Most importantly, by understanding the range of opportunities that practice can offer, you will go through the process of discovering how everything that you have learnt academically, technically, philosophically, socially and intellectually can fit together and be relevant to determining the progression of your future career.  This unit will not just be an academic exercise but one that involves a journey of self-exploration and discovery that may assist you in realising your potential and future direction.

The lectures, workshops, exercises and assessments of this unit will be a tool for discovery and an insight to the processes and journey involved from the day you graduate to the day that you, should you be bold enough, decide to take the ‘adventurous’ step of starting your own practice.

The intention is to have, at the end of your final semester, a deeper understanding of the complexity of architectural practices today – from the large corporate firms to the boutique studio or even a free-lancer.  This understanding will help you to fashion a realistic industry relevant ‘package’ specific to the ideal practice for you that you can immediately use upon graduation as you engage in the real world when you begin to look for employment.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of nine graduate attributes during their course of study. These tell an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and attributes which employers say would be useful in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the graduate attributes through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes tell you what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your achievement of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes.

Your course has been designed so that on graduating we can say you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Attributes through the assurance of learning process in each unit.

On successful completion of this unit students can: Graduate Attributes addressed

1 Evaluate options related to legal and contractual issues relevant to contemporary professional practice in the discipline

2 Assess the management and marketing practices in a range of industry settings

3 Construct a business plan that considers management and marketing in architectural practice

In addition to the weekly workshops, you’ll be taking part in a Leadership Program.  The weekly workshops will be about information gathering, analysis and discussions that will lead towards the objective of focusing your attention on the usually overwhelming task of figuring out ‘who you are?’ and ‘where are you going?’.

The assignment will be a ‘journal’ that will include the deliverables set out below.

Deliverables for submission:

1. Written and diagrammatic submission consisting of the following -

l Answers to questions

l Mind map

The information gathered from this assignment, that forms your ‘profile’, will be used in future assessments.

l How are you different to another candidate or your peers?

l How and when can you call yourself or be called an expert in certain areas of practice?

You will need to demonstrate that you understand:

part A – business plan

Let’s set the scene:

You currently work in a tiny firm that operates out of your employer’s dilapidated weatherboard home that freezes in winter and bakes in summer which was ironic because the firm claimed to design environmental sustainable architecture.  Throughout your employment, there were creative differences between you and your boss and eventually, you were let go the day after you went on your annual leave.  Shortly after, you’ve managed to sit and pass the architect’s registration [like a boss] so you’re now a fully-fledged Architect with a capital ‘A’ [like a boss]!  Bored with the projects that you were doing at the firm before you were let go, you managed to fit in more inspiring private projects outside of office hours.  Soon you have a small handful of projects under your wing.  So instead of being employed with a steady income, you decided ‘what the hell?’ and you’ve set out to start your own practice.

The first part of the assignment is about the birth of a practice.  You are to form up and refine the following over a series of workshops:

l A business plan suitable for application for a bank loan or potential investor/s with decisions made about business structure, target market, capital costs etc which will be discussed during the workshop.

l A proposal demonstrating your understanding of the elements used to calculate charge out rates and fees for your services.

The above should be informed by both ASSESSMENTS 01 and 02.

Deliverables for submission:

1. business plan – written and diagrammatic package

For further assessment/submission details and marking criteria, please go to the Assessment tab in Blackboard.

part B – marketing package

This part of the assignment is about refining and packaging everything that you have discovered, filtered and developed through elements taken from ASSESSMENTS 01 and 02:

l A marketing package [including a website should you rise up to the challenge!] that speaks of your ‘brand’ or speciality/niche.

l This package will demonstrate your understanding of professional ethics around the advertisement of yourself [whether as a practitioner or of a firm].

Deliverables to be displayed at your thesis exhibition:

1. business cards

2. portfolio

3. curriculum vitae

4. resume

5. pamphlet for potential employer – tell them what you’re about effectively

This final package will need to be linked to your thesis and will be at the end-of-year exhibition that will showcase the final Masters students’ dissertation projects to the industry and to potential employers.  No pressure!  Everything should read as ONE holistic exhibition that expresses who you are and what you’re about.  Consider how the 5 elements listed above are linked visually - graphics, colours, layout and even font used.  Remember, this is your ‘shopfront’ or first impression of YOU.  Treat potential employers like potential investors.

For further assessment/submission details and marking criteria, please go to the Assessment tab in Blackboard.

Pass requirements

Students must achieve following must be achieved to pass this unit:

l Complete and submit all assessments

l Final total Mark of 50 or greater

Note that there are no supplementary assessments or exams for this unit.

Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that student work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessment are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/teachingandlearning.cfm

Late assessment policy

This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and that penalties are consistently applied.

1. All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline. 2. Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission

(eg a mark equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension

A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (eg examinations, tests) or due date/time (eg assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the assessment task.

The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment task where the student is able to provide an acceptable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the application prior to the assessment date. An application for an assessment extension will not be accepted after the date of the Board of Examiners' meeting.

Deferred assessments

Supplementary assessments

Supplementary assessments are not available in this unit.

If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check OASIS for details.

Deferred examinations/tests will be held from DD/MM/YY to DD/MM/YY . Notification to students will be made after the Board of Examiners’ meeting via the Official Communications Channel (OCC) in OASIS.

Recent unit changes Students are encouraged to provide unit feedback through eVALUate, Curtin's online student feedback system. For more information about eVALUate, please refer to evaluate.curtin.edu.au/info/.

Recent changes to this unit include:

1. Introduction

2. Learning activities

3. Assessment details

4. Assessment value

5. Program calendar

Reasons for change

l Shifting of the unit from a knowledge focus outline to emphasize on the preparation of graduating students into professional practice that is relevant to the industry.

l A focus on continuous growth and process rather than merely testing the students’ knowledge through regurgitation of what has been taught in class.

l The changes to the unit will place emphasis on ‘summarizing’ or packaging the students’ academic experience over the years that will assist in gaining employment in the industry.

To view previous student feedback about this unit, search for the Unit Summary Report at https://evaluate.curtin.edu.au/student/unit_search.cfm. See https://evaluate.curtin.edu.au/info/dates.cfm to find out when you can eVALUate this unit.
