n our recent Adult Ed classes we have looked at some questions like "Who is God?," "Why did God become man?," and "How are we saved?" All of these questions can be summed up in one word – LOVE. God is love and he loves freely and continually. God became man out of His love for us and His desire to bring us back to Himself. And we are saved because God loved us so much that he gave His Son (John 3:16).

ikewise, today's Gospel reading can be summed up in the same word – LOVE. This is our primary command that God has given us: first, to love Him as He loves us; and secondly, to love our neighbors or – as we see in the parable of the Good Samaritan – we are to love anyone, whom God sends us. By looking out for and loving each other, we are actually loving God through our neighbors. We are taught today not to pass up any opportunity to show love to another human being. No matter how small – a few dollars to the homeless person on the street, contributing to a food or clothing drive, or simply reaching out and touching someone, who is hurting and lonely – love makes all the difference in the world. – Fr. Joseph

Q: What does ICXC stand for?

A: ICXC is a traditional abbreviation or “Christogram” (Christian monogram) for Jesus Christ in the Eastern Orthodox Church. It combines the first and last letters of Jesus’ name in Greek, Iusus Christos. These initials are often paired with, or written above, the letters NIKA, which signify “victory” or “is victorious,” hence the phrase “Jesus Christ conquers all!”

– Fr. John MOVIE NIGHT/ST. LAWRENCE PROJECT: Next Saturday, November 19, we will have

a combined movie night and St. Lawrence Project. Immediately after Vespers, we will be making caramel/candy/chocolate apples in the Church Lower Level to be sold for the Sunday School. After that, we will share a meal and show a couple of

short movies for the family to enjoy. Please join us for some fun and fellowship!

YOLKA PRACTICE: A practice session will take place after Divine Liturgy on November 20, lasting about one hour, for grades 4 – 9 students. Pizza will be served. Please bring your play parts!

CLEVELAND “ R” CLUB HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE! November 27 – December 18 we will be collecting nonperishable food to benefit St. Herman’s Orthodox House of Hospitality and St. Mary of Egypt’s Food Pantry Outreach Program. Collection boxes will be located in the Vestibule and the Church Lower Level. If you have any questions, please contact Monica Visocky at 440-457-7174.

SAVE THIS DATE! On Saturday, December 10, we will hold our annual Advent Retreat, with guest speaker Fr. Sergius, Abbot of St. Tikhon’s Monastery. Details to follow.

YOLKA: On Sunday, December 4, after Divine Liturgy at Woodside, our children will give

the annual presentation of Yolka. Please join us for this special event and enjoy the talented group of our parish’s young. The play will be preceded by a delicious and festive luncheon. Tickets (adults $8, children $3.50) will be available for purchase soon, or call the Church Office (440-526-5192) to reserve

them. Deadline for purchase is Tuesday, November 29. As always, Sunday School participants have free admission. In the Holy Orthodox Church, November 15th marks the beginning of the 40-day

Lenten period, which prepares us for the fast-

approaching Feast of our Lord’s Nativity. Formally known as the Nativity

Fast, it is also often referred to by the faithful as, “the Fast of St. Philip,” or “Philip’s Fast,” because it is immediately preceded by the feast day of this Holy Apostle (Nov. 14th). In the West, this same Lenten season is mostly known as Advent, a word derived from Latin which means “coming” and denotes the fact that upon the Nativity Feast, God comes into the world born of woman.

Like the archetypal Great Fast (Great Lent), which precedes Holy Week and Pascha, this fasting season also lasts for 40 days. This standard was a generally accepted length of time for one to prepare oneself before any important activity or undertaking – even since Old Testament times! Therefore, the central theme of the Advent Fast is indeed one of preparation, for we are called upon to prepare ourselves for the “coming” of our Lord and Savior

and to make ourselves worthy to meet Him in that humble manger.

It is certainly true that the Lord Jesus has already come and is present to us in the world but, through the discipline and self- denial found in fasting, this season allows us a much more vivid awareness of His presence. Jesus is obviously near us and in us. Nonetheless, all-too-often we fail to focus enough of our attention to actually see, witness, or acknowledge Him working within our lives. Therefore, the time of Advent is also a time of correcting our outlook.

Perhaps a good and simple prayer for us to focus on, as well as a means for defining our ascetic preparations during this Holy Season, might be the same words used as a final close to the mysterious Book of the Apocalypse (Revelation): “Come, Lord Jesus!” For by keeping this phrase upon our lips as we approach our Lord’s Blessed Nativity, we will be ever more aware of the importance of His “coming” into our lives and spiritually alert to His mystical presence in our day-to-day activities.

May God grant each of us a blessed and successful Nativity Fast!

Very Rev. Fr. John Memorich
