Following Christ Mor e Closely:- February 2 nd , the feast of the Presentation of our Lord, is celebrated as the day of Consecrated Life. The members of the institutes of consecrated life (Religious Institutes and Secular Institutes), through the profession of the Evangelical Counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience, are totally dedicated to God and are called to follow Christ more closely under the action of the Holy Spirit. It is said a man is more precious for what he is than for what he has. The religious are more precious for what they are than for what they have or do. Religious life is more a matter of being than doing; it is more relational than functional. On the day of their profession, the religious make a total, unconditional and absolute surrender of themselves in imitation of the most Blessed Virgin Mary. “By a new and a special title they are dedicated to seek the perfection of charity in the service of God’s Kingdom, for the honour of God, the building up of the church and the salvation of the world”(can.573). “The religious make a full gift of themselves as a sacrifice offered to God so that their whole existence becomes a continuing worship of God in charity” (can.607). All the activities and services of the religious flow from their deep sense of consecration and from their intimate union with Christ through constant prayer. Whatever the religious do, they do out of love for Christ and for people. “The apostolate of all the religious consists primarily in the witness of their consecrated life” (can.673). Following the example of Christ, the religious are called to dedicate themselves in a special way- to be with the poor, for the poor and like the poor- in loving service to them.
