Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:

There is so much heartache, sadness, scandal, miscommu-nication, people not getting along, an unwillingness to work together even if they have different ideas, etc., in this world. It all takes a toll on us. The same dynamics affect our Church.

I read an excellent article published Feb. 15, 2020 in USA Today entitled “In this time of great scandal, faithful priests need your love more than ever” by Tim Busch. Cf.: https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/02/15/time-scandal-faithful-priests-love-more-ever-column/4723836002/

The sexual scandals have rocked legitimately the trust of the Catholic faithful in our Church leadership. Many of our leaders have not handled well these scandals. But some of our leaders have done their best in almost impossible situa-tions, being attentive both to the abused and also the abuser. The abused need to be listened to, cared for, etc. The abuser (and leadership) need to be held accountable for their actions Just as the abused needs to be ministered to, so too the abuser needs to be ministered to also, not to be abandoned. We were commanded in last week’s gospel “to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Oh how hard to do so! Just as when your own children may commit grievous offens-es (ethically, morally and/or legally), good parents will not turn their backs on their children, no matter how disheartened they may be. All bishops should have a fatherly love to all their clergy, even when some commit such grievous offenses.

As with any profession, it is the small number who give such a bad reputation to all. The vast majority of clergy who strive to live our calling are affected profoundly by these abuse cases just like you. We as clergy are unfortunately all tarnished by this evil. It takes a toll on us. Anyone can make an accusation, but not all accusations are credible. So most of us clergy live in fear of an unjust accusation.

Though studies indicate most clergy enjoy their ministry, there are many burdens: a smaller number of clergy with a smaller number in seminary, an aging clergy, trying to serve an increasing number of Catholics in a world that is hostile both to the Gospel and the Catholic Church. There is also an

Message from the Pastor p. 3

increasing number of people who consider themselves “spiritual” and have no need of Sunday corporate worship or of organized religion which is affecting all denominations. Plus, the sexual scandals affect us profoundly. The morale of the clergy is very low.

The cited article mentioned a priest who “described a day in the life of the average priest as ‘whack-a-mole, going from fire to fire,’ from troubled marriages to impoverished families to death beds. He also told me they’re weighed down by parishioners’ expectations, which are that every priest will be ‘as compassionate as Jesus, and oh by the way, experts at running small (or large) companies, fundraisers extraordinaire and able to preach like John the Baptist.’ Priests feel like they’re being asked to do the impossible.”

I shared this article with several priests, and every priest concurred with these sentiments, as I do. I shared it with several lay people, and they all asked what can they do. Pray for all of us clergy. The expectations are huge, & many are unrealistic. Be a little forgiving when we are not always smiling, do not have an easy solution to your problems or our homilies are not excellent. Sometimes we are just tired. We are told to have close friends for support, but when we do have such healthy friendships, we are questioned.

When priests are ordained, we are to preach the Gospel, teach the faith, celebrate the Sacraments, be leaders of pray-er, build community, etc. No where in the Rite of Ordination states that we are to be parish CEO’s, to balance budgets, to be fund raisers, to manage staffs and volunteers, etc. But that comes with the pastor’s responsibilities. I am burdened by the dramatic decrease in collections, cf. p. 13. I believe the sexual scandals, the continuing road constructions ham-pering access to us, and the increasing homeless population have affected our decrease. But with less money, what ex-penses have to be cut? We already have such a lean budget with a relatively small staff compared to other similar par-ishes. How do we reach the high number people who give nothing or very little yet are able to do so? How do I moti-vate people to volunteer, to want to learn the faith, etc.? I have no answers. We all have to pray. We all have to work together, contribute and be creative! But are we?

Homily Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, con-substantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,

(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. E I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for-ward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Entrance hymns for Lent

Like last year, for the five Sundays of Lent in 2020, we will use a special set of entrance hymns for the English Masses. These come from a resource called Hymn Introits for the Liturgical Year, by Christoph Tietze. The words translate the Latin Introits, part of the Propers of the Mass, in a poe tic form, sung to tunes we know, such as today's HYFRYDOL. (Hymn tunes are written in capital letters.)

This Lent, you will have the opportunity to hear the Introits in their original Latin, too, as the choir/cantor will continue to begin mass with the Introit from the Gregorian Missal. Then we will all respond with the metricized translation.

Please meditate on these texts as you sing them. Look around and relish your fellow worshipers—in no other activity this weekend will you instinctively breathe in time with strangers. The organ will be less prominent in the character of Lent, but don't sing any less loud-ly! In fact, during this season, in the entrance hymns, will you do one of three things?

1. If you're not a singer, then pick up the bulletin and really follow along with the words, as though it is the Liturgy of the Word. (It is! The Propers are Biblical, and actually a parallel to those readings.) 2. If you have been singing, will you use just a little more wind these weeks? Take bigger breaths while singing, and let out a little more sound, like 25% more. 3. If you are a SINGER, then let loose. Use reckless abandon. Enjoy leading those around you, and enjoy the beauty of singing in our beautiful space. “When they call in tribulation, I will surely hear their prayer, An-swer them and be with them…"

Christian Meditation Wed. Evenings at 6:30 PM Parish Library On the first floor of the Cathedral Centre.

What is Christian Meditation? Christian Meditation is not a study or discussion, but a weekly meeting of Christians coming together to silence their minds/hearts and listen to the quiet voice of God speaking. After a brief,

pre-selected Christian message, participants meditate in silence for about 20 minutes. Meditation is an ancient form of Christian prayer practiced by the saints, and religious communities throughout the world.

The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in your home is an act of adoration that publicly declares Him as “Lord of the Household.” It is more than setting aside a dwelling place for Him in a building; it is the welcoming of the Reign of Christ into the heart of the family who dwells within that place. He becomes the central focus. He prom-ises great blessings for families and individuals who honor Him with the installation of a blessed image of His Sacred Heart, proclaim His Kingship over them and make a cove-nant of love with Him.

This action of enthroning the Sacred Heart has an impact on families and individuals that carries over to society and becomes the basis for spreading the Social Reign of our King and Savior. In this sense, the Enthronement is very much in line with the mind of the Church who wishes to see acts of charity, peace and justice move from the family circle to all society.

This peaceful, 40 day fast-ing effort gives local Catholics ample opportunity to join with people of faith around the country in doing something significant to help put an end to abortion. Prayer for Respect Life

God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent your Son to bring us life. Instill in us a respect for all life,

from conception to natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor .

Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn.

Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect.

Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. We ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Faith Formation Sunday: March 1—1st Sunday of Lent Gospel Reading: Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus fasts for 40 days in the desert and is tempted by the devil. All Faith Formation Sessions begin at 9 am with Opening Prayer.

Family Connection

When Jesus resists the temptations presented to him by the devil, he draws on his religious upbringing and tradition. Jesus is able to quote from Scripture because he is the Son of God and because he was a human person who lived his Jewish beliefs fully. We who are re-sponsible for raising children are also called upon to immerse them fully in our Catholic Christian tradition so that they too will be able to draw upon this tradition to resist the temptations they will face in their lives.

Use this Sunday as an opportunity to call your family’s attention to the importance of Scripture in our lives. Gather your family around the family Bible and read today’s Gospel, Matthew 4:1-11. Recall that Jesus rebuked the devil’s temptations by quoting Scripture. Take some time as a family to talk about the words that are found in the Bible and the importance of Scripture to our faith. Perhaps the older members of the family can share a favorite Scripture passage with everyone. Younger family members can tell their favorite story from the Bible and be shown where that story can be found. In each case, encourage a deeper sharing of faith by asking each person to tell why the Scripture passage shared is important to him or her. Conclude your time together by again reading Jesus’ reply to the devil found in Matthew 4:4 (“One does not live by bread alone . . .”) and praying the Lord’s Prayer. Source: Loyola

Saints for the Lenten Season As you observe Lent this year, take time to learn about and reflect on the lives of these saints whose feast days fall within the season. March 3: St. Katharine Drexel March 7: Sts. Perpetua and Felicity March 17: St. Patrick To learn more about these Saints, visit the following website: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/saints/saints-whose-feast-days-fall-within-lent-2015.cfm

Make cards of encouragement to those in your parish’s RCIA program. After a lot of study and prayer, most of them will be received into the Church at the end of Lent.

Pretzels had their origin in early Christian Lenten practices Because fat, eggs, and milk were forbid-den during Lent, a special bread was made with dough consisting of only flour, salt, and water. These little breads were shaped in the form of arms crossed in prayer. Choose one night in Lent to make pretzels. Find a recipe on the internet. Watch Joseph of Nazareth (Feast: March 19th) &

ALL NEW PARISH COMPUTERS Believe it or not, the parish office was still using Win-dows 7. On Jan. 14th, 2020, Microsoft dropped support for Windows 7. Because of this, we migrated to the Windows 10 Operating System. The desktop computers we were using were almost 7 years old & would not run Windows 10. Thus all of our office desktop computers had to be re-placed as well. At the same time, we moved to Microsoft Office 365 which is cloud-based. It has all of the applica-tions we were using in Microsoft Office, but they are new & improved versions. What we pay for Microsoft Office licensing will actually be reduced by about 50%. Total cost of this project was $25,083. If possible, please be extra generous in your contributions.

Stewardship Reflection 1st Sunday of Lent: March 1

That we prune ourselves of earthly things and ask God how he is calling us to serve.

“It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.” Matthew 4:10

Tempted between the riches & power of this world and service to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from worldly power & riches and put God at the center of our lives. Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things. Ask God how he is calling you to serve.

The Office of the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston has a 3-fold mission: (1) to foster voca-tions to the permanent diaconate as a life of committed & sacramental service to the Church, (2) to direct the formation of aspirants & candidates to the diaconate during the 6 years of study & service leading to ordination to the diaconate, & (3) to assist deacons, their wives and families and their col-leagues in the Church in the living out of the ministry of the diaconate in service to the holy people of God.

How does the permanent diaconate benefit the Co-Cathedral? Currently we have Joe Millhouse and his wife, Wendy, who have been going through the diaconate formation preparation. God willing, Joe will be ordained a deacon in January 2021 and will be serving the Co-Cathedral. Plus, we have 4 permanent deacons who are serv-ing the Co-Cathedral: Deacons John Carrara (wife Olga), Daniel Addis (widower), Lynn Carney (wife Anne) and Gil Vela (wife Angie).
