With summer looming, there are many things to look forward to.
Going to the beach, picnics, long‐planned vacations, just to name a few.
This summer, if time or money is in short supply, consider one of our
simple summer indulgences that can lift the spirit without emptying the
pockets.

The story of Jesus sending out the disciples reminds us that, as Christ’s disciples, we should not be overly concerned about mate‐
rial goods, possessions and money. We are called to willingly share our gifts and expect nothing in return.

This was Jesus’ simple command to all of us at the end of the Good Samaritan story. How do we do “likewise?” By sharing our
skills. By reaching into our pockets when financial help is needed. By taking the time to help when we are needed, not when it’s
convenient for us.

The story of Martha and Mary reminds us that God wants each of us to serve Him, just as Martha so graciously served. How‐
ever, we will never know what God wants us to do unless we spend some time like Mary did, just sitting quietly at God’s feet
and listening to His words.

“Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” LUKE 11:9
Jesus assures us that if we ask Him, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that in our culture we often confuse
what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A
good steward only asks God for what he needs.

The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value
lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store
up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.

Jesus encourages us to build up our treasure in heaven. The world encourages us to build up our treasure in real estate, invest‐
ments, and material goods. How much time are you investing in building up a worldly treasure? How much time are you invest‐
ing in building up a heavenly treasure? To invest more time in the things of heaven, you must let go of some of the things of this
world.

Living a stewardship lifestyle means stepping out of our comfort zone when needed. Many of us like to play it safe, not cause waves, stay in the middle of the road. In today’s world we are called to be informed and take a stance for life, marriage and religious liberty.

Our standards in our society are so different from God’s standards. We often rate or rank people by what they have, how power‐ful they are, or how successful they are. Jesus reminds us that God will not judge us by the same earthly standards.

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want some‐
thing in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remember that the true reward for our
giving awaits us in heaven.

23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” LUKE 14:33
When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions?
We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone.
All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we
possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.

Our Heavenly Father gives us everything, including the chance to share in His eternal kingdom. Yet, like the Prodigal Son we are often lured
away by the materialism of our society. Do we really want to turn our backs on all that God offers in exchange for a material wealth that has
no lasting value?

Try to make it a habit to give God the first few minutes of each day by simply praying, “Lord, what do You want me to do today with all the gifts
You have given me?” Then be sure to listen for His response throughout each day.

“My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is com‐
forted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” LUKE 16:25‐26
When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap between those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.

para ayudar cuando se nos necesita, no cuando es conveniente para nosotros.

silencio a los pies de Dios, escuchando Su palabra.

Jesús nos asegura que si se lo pedimos, Dios se encarga de lo que necesitamos. El problema es que en nuestra cultura a menudo
nos confundimos lo que realmente necesitamos con lo que simplemente queremos. La mayoría de las personas necesita muy
poco. Sin embargo, a menudo queremos mucho más. Un buen servidor solo le pregunta a Dios solo lo que necesita.

El mensaje del Evangelio hoy es muy contraria a nuestra cultura moderna, donde la publicidad intenta constantemente de con‐
vencernos de que nuestro valor está en las cosas que poseemos. Jesús nos mostró que nuestro valor real está en la forma en que
vivimos nuestras vidas. Él nos desafía a que no almacenemos o acumulemos posesiones materiales, si no que vivamos una vida
agradecida y generosa.

Jesús nos incentiva a que construyamos nuestro tesoro en el Cielo. El mundo nos incentiva a que construyamos nuestro tesoro
en bienes raíces, inversiones y bienes materiales. ¿Cuánto tiempo está invirtiendo en construir tesoros mundanos? ¿Cuánto
tiempo está invirtiendo en construir tesoros celestiales? Para invertir más tiempo en cosas celestiales, debe desprenderse de
algunas cosas mundanas.

Vivir una vida de servicio significa salir de nuestra zona de comodidad cuando sea necesario. Muchos de nosotros prefiere la seguridad, sin causar ondas, quedarnos en medio del camino. En el mundo de hoy se nos llama a estar informados y tomar una postura por la vida, el matrimonio y la libertad de religión.

Los estándares de nuestra sociedad son muy diferentes de los estándares de Dios. Muchas veces calificamos a la gente por cuan‐
to poder tienen, o que tan exitosos son. Jesús nos recuerda que Dios no nos juzgara por los mismos estándares mundanos.

Se nos hace difícil comprender el concepto de vivir sin esperar nada a cambio. También cuando damos algo de caridad esperamos algo a cam‐
bio‐ un ticket de rifa, una cena, o una oportunidad para jugar golf. Pero, como servidores cristianos, debemos recordar que la verdadera recom‐
pensa a nuestras donaciones está en el Cielo.

Cuando escuchamos esta frase, parece como si Jesús nos estuviera haciendo una demanda poco realista. ¿Cómo podemos renunciar a todas
nuestras posesiones? Las necesitamos para vivir. Sin embargo, a lo que si debemos renunciar es que todo lo que tenemos nos pertenece. Todo
lo que tenemos le pertenece solo a Dios. Se nos confía todos nuestros recursos no tan solo para nuestro propio uso, sino que también para
ayudar a los otros. Una vez que renunciemos a la idea de que poseemos o tenemos derecho a algo, es más fácil compartir los muchos regalos
que Dios nos ha dado. Así somos de verdad Sus Discípulos.

Cuando Dios creo el mundo El declaro que era bueno y se lo dio a toda la humanidad para que la disfrutara. Sin embargo, con el paso de los años hemos creado un abismo entre aquellos que tienen grandes regalos y aquellos que no los tienen. En el Evangelio de hoy vemos que con nuestra propia generosidad debemos llenar el espacio entre aquellos que tienen mucho y aquellos que viven con poco, o nos podríamos encon‐trar en el lado equivocado del abismo en la próxima vida.

On Wednesday, May 15, the Archdiocese of Newark and TD Bank cohosted a gathering
at the Archdiocesan Center.
The purpose of the gathering was to inform the various parishes and schools of the
Archdiocese of Newark, about TD Bank’s Affinity Membership Program.
Designed to help support non‐profit organizations at no cost to its members or support‐
ers, the program has been a win‐win decision for several of our parishes.
If your parish or school was unable to attend and would like the handouts distributed by
TD Bank, you can email us and we would be happy to send them to you.
Gratia Plena Evangelical Community, residing at St. Antoninus Church in Newark, NJ, invites you to join them for the
week‐long Mission Immersion 5, July 15‐21, 2013.
We will stay at St. Antoninus for the week and serve at different sites around the city. ( i.e. soup kitchen, nursing
home, etc.)
At night we will have activities such as Bible Study, Prayer Meeting, and a Holy Road trip!
There will also be daily prayer including Mass and Adoration.
This is a life changing experience!

SUCCESS! The offices of Development and Stewardship at the Archdiocese of Newark recently held a Wills Awareness and Planned Giving Seminar.
The event took place Saturday, June 8 at Holy Family in Union City, NJ.
Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, at the Archdiocese of Newark, spoke about the importance of preparing a will, amending an already exist-ing will, planned giving, charitable gift annuities, leaving health directives, and the different types of wills. Surprisingly, some have nothing to do with money!
The attendees were attentive and had lots of questions to ask.
All in all, the message conveyed to everyone was, “Consider your options, plan for yourself, your family and the causes you care about.”
