ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST MARCH 7, 2016 A $4.8 MILLION ITALIANATE TOWNHOUSE IN ONE OF BROOKLYN’S BEST-PRESERVED BUILDINGS: THE HOME IS IN THE CITY’S OLDEST HISTORIC DISTRICT This romantic Italianate townhouse in Brooklyn, developed by the Pierreponts in 1856, boasts many firsts. It’s one of the initial buildings to be constructed after a street grid was laid in Brooklyn Heights and it’s also located in the city’s very first historic district. As part of one of the best- preserved residential housing enclaves in the entire country, the property is featured as a piece of significant architecture in the AIA Guide to New York City. Currently, the building is configured as four co-op apartments, which were developed by architect and historian Norval White in 1986. Combining the original parlor and garden floors, the duplex for sale features 12-foot ceilings with Queen Anne–style ornamental plasterwork and a hand-painted cherub mural on the ceiling of the parlor room. Other period details include inlaid-glass transoms and extensive millwork. There’s a renovated kitchen, a sunroom that opens to the garden, and a library. The master suite—which features a private sitting room and a home office—and two other bedrooms round out the living space. Accessible through the sunroom and sitting area, the 700-square-foot garden has a brick terrace planted with greenery, and is an idyllic spot for dining and entertaining.
