Direct Burial Floodlight
The Direct Burial Floodlight (DBF)is a new Kim innovation,combining the features of in-grade accent lights withabove-grade floodlights. The KimDBF offers full floodlight opticalsystems in an architecturalhousing designed to project thelowest possible profile abovegrade. As such, the DBF offers afloodlighting solution for sensitivearchitectural designs whereabove-grade floodlights woulddetract from the purity of thebuilding and site. Using thetechnology developed for Kim’srenowned Lightvault below-grade luminaires, the DBF uses acomposite housing for maximumbelow-grade durability and seal integrity. The above-gradehousing is heavy cast bronze or aluminum and contains 9 optical systems from Kim’s celebrated ArchitecturalFloodlight product line.

With a nominal optical aiming angle of 45°, DBF11-17models are for mounting away from the building tocreate floodlighting effects. Minimum setback fromthe building should be 6' for DBF11-14 “flood”models, while much greater setbacks will berequired for DBF15-17 “spot” models. For smallsigns, a ≤6' setback could be used. See pages 6-9for examples.

Bronze or Aluminum Above-grade HousingsRugged one-piece, heavy-wallcastings are used for the above-grade housing and lens frame.Bronze housing is natural, andwill weather to a deep bronzecolor. Aluminum housing isfinished with Super TGICPowder Coat.
Optional Grout MaskA galvanized steel Grout Mask isavailable to aid fixture installationin paved surfaces or a concretepad. Grout Mask is tied intorebar and supports the fixtureduring concrete pour. Seepages 15 and 16.
Anti-siphon BarriersAll wires entering and exiting theballast compartment passthrough anti-siphon barriers.This prevents any moisture fromseeping into the ballast area through the wiring. Each anti-siphon barrier is a one-piece molded and threadedplug installed at the factory.
Composite Below-gradeHousingFor maximum corrosionresistance, the below-gradehousing is compression-molded, high-temperature, fiberglassimpregnated composite. Captivebrass inserts are molded in toreceive the lens frame screws.Two L" NPT conduit entries areprovided in the bottom.
External AimingTo provide the specifier or ownerwith true visual aiming ability, theDBF has been engineered withan external aiming feature. This means that fine-tuning ofthe lighting effect can be achieved at night, with thefixture energized and anyoptional attachments in position.Removing a waterproof plug ontop of the housing accesses theaiming mechanism. An allenwrench is inserted into the housing and aimingadjustments are made whilevisually observing the changesin the lighting effect on the targetsurface or building feature.When aiming is complete, justre-insert the waterproof plug toseal the housing. The plug istethered to the housing toprevent accidental loss whenremoved.
Optional Lexan® SLX LensShield and Fixed HoodsFor additional side-glare control,a Fixed Hood or Full Shield isavailable. These glare controldevices may only be used withthe DBF11-17, as they willinterfere with the straight-up lightthrow from the DBF18 and 19.For vandal-prone areas, theoptional Lexan® SLX Lens Shieldcan be added and used inaddition to the Fixed Hood or Full Shield.

Color FiltersKim color filters are constructed ofcolor media material sandwichedbetween two sheets of temperedglass, sealed around all edges.The filter is held 2" away from thefixture lens by an extrudedaluminum holder. Available in 5 colors. See pages 13 and 15.
Nine Optical SystemsThe DBF is available in nineoptical configurations rangingfrom wide flood to narrow spot.For the DBF11-17 (45° nominalaiming), all reflectors are fromKim’s AFL10 series of ArchitecturalFloodlights. For the DBF18 and19 (0° nominal aiming), newreflectors have been engineeredfor this configuration. All 9reflectors are self-containedmodules, fully interchangeablewithin the common housing.Each module is retained in the housing by quick-releasehinges, and all wires have quick-disconnect plugs.

ArchitectureThe building created for theseperformance models is strictlyfor the purpose of showing thelighting effects of all 9 DBFmodels on one structure. It is acombination of geometricshapes and textures thatsimulate the various elementsthat are often found inarchitecture. By creating a singlebuilding for all 9 DBF opticalsystems, it is easier to comparethe differences between theindividual lighting effects. Thebuilding facade is divided intoleft and right sides, separated bya cone element. The left side is atextured wall with variouselements that allow flood, spot,or grazing effects to beillustrated. The right side hasthree columns supporting anoverhang to show the lightingeffect on structural elements andrecessed spaces. To create afinished lighting effect on thisbuilding, multiple fixtures wouldnormally be used.

Lighting EffectsThe lighting effects in thefollowing nine illustrations are notrenderings, but actual computergenerated effects derived fromreal photometric data. Eachillustration was created by a 3Ddesign, modeling, and animationprogram capable of readingactual I.E.S. photometric filesfrom each DBF fixture. The illustrations are veryaccurate and represent abreakthrough technology by KimLighting in helping specifiersvisualize and apply the complexart of floodlighting.

Lens: F" impact resistant clear tempered glass enclosed by a one-piece high temperature silicone gasket.
Below-Grade Housing: High temperature, compression molded,fiberglass impregnated, F" min. wall composite. Charcoal gray. No top lip to trap dirt and moisture. Solid brass knurled insertsmolded-in to receive above-grade housing screws. Separate spliceand ballast compartments with individual cast aluminum internalcovers with silicone gaskets. Wiring: Anti-siphon barriers on all wiring to and from ballastcompartment and lamp compartment. All components wire linkedfor ground, quick disconnect for removal of optical system.
Finish: Cast aluminum housing and lens frame are finished in SuperTGIC thermoset polyester powder coat over clear anodizing.Standard colors are Black, Dark Bronze, Light Gray, Platinum Silver,or White. Powder coating is 2.5-mil nominal thickness, and allcomponents are thoroughly cleaned and primed with a TitanatedZirconium conversion coating prior to powder coating. Create a Buffer ZoneWhen fixtures are located in areas planted in ground cover or shrubbery, construct a buffer zone to prevent lens overgrowth and to create anedge for trimming. Elevate thefixtures for drainage and backfillwith decorative rock. As theground cover grows, the fixtureswill look flush even though theyare 2" to 4" above grade.
Install in ConcreteAnother option for installations inground cover, shrubbery or lawnareas is to encase the fixture inconcrete. This creates the bufferzone as described above, withthe additional advantage ofgreater fixture stability. Elevatethe fixture 2" to 4" above grade,and slope the concrete awayfrom the housing for drainage.
In Paved AreasWhen below-grade luminairesare installed in paving, it isusually required that the below-grade housing be flushwith finished grade. To make thisinstallation easier, Kim offers anoptional Grout Mask (page 15)to support the housing at theproper height during theconcrete pour. The Grout Maskis normally tied into the pavingrebar for support.
NOTE: Always use adequate rebar surrounding the fixture to preventcracking of the concrete due to heat expansion.
Wiring and AssemblyAfter installing conduit and pulling the correct conductors into thesplice compartment, seal the conduit by injecting silicone sealer intothe open conduit end to completely block the entry of water.Clean all gaskets, cover plates, housing flanges, and housinginterior. Install gaskets, cover plates, and housings as outlined in theInstallation Instructions. Install lamp and test for operation.Energize the fixture. Allow the fixture to reach operating temperature(at least 30 minutes). Remove aiming plug and allow the fixture to“Breathe” for approximately 10 minutes; this will permit the moist airto be “Exhaled”. While the fixture is still energized, replace theaiming plug and tighten as described in the Installation Instructions.This procedure should be repeated each time the fixture is openedfor maintenance.

Pre-planning fixture locations is very important with the Kim DBF11-17 models, particularly setbacks (A). Unlike above-gradefloodlights, the DBF housing is fixed, and aiming is accomplishedby externally adjusting the reflectors ±20° vertically. Therefore, youmust make sure that the target is within the aiming range of thefixture, based on its setback (A). This is far more critical for theDBF15, 16, and 17 due to the narrow beam spreads of the Spot,Narrow Spot, and Horizontal Spot optical systems.
The following table shows the height on the target surface (typicallya wall or sign) that the 45° nominal aiming angle falls (C), and theheight where it would fall if aimed ±20° (B and D), all based on thesetback (A).
