ARCHITECTURE 101 Mid-Century Modern Hollin Hills neighborhood, Fairfax County, VA LOCATION: Located in the Fort Hunt area, between U.S. Route 1 and Fort Hunt Road (Rt. 629), south of the City of Alexandria in Fairfax County, Virginia. ARCHITECT: Charles Goodman with landscape architect Dan Kiley CONSTRUCTED: Begun in the late 1940s Look for: • Flat roof, usually without ledge at roofline • Floor to ceiling windows • Extension of house into landscape Notes: Hollin Hills was built by Robert C. Davenport, and designed by D.C.-based architect Charles M. Goodman and landscape architect Dan Kiley in the 1940s. The community is known for its modern architecture, integration of the existing landscape, and sensitive house siting that provides natural privacy. Southwest Waterfront neighborhood, Washington, D.C. LOCATION: Bounded by Interstate 395 to the north, Washington Channel to the west, the Anacostia River to the south, and South Capitol Street to the east. ARCHITECT: Various architects including Charles Goodman and Chloethiel Woodward Smith CONSTRUCTED: 1950s Look for: • Buildings on piloti (columns) with landscape passing beneath • Large expanses of window Notes: A product of the urban renewal of the late 1940s, Washington D.C.’s Southwest Waterfront neighborhood includes a high concentration of mid- century apartment buildings and town homes. Lake Barcroft neighborhood, Fairfax County, VA LOCATION: Located near Falls Church, Virginia, between Sleepy Hollow Road and Leesburg Pike (U.S. 7) in Fairfax County. ARCHITECT: Various architects CONSTRUCTED: Begun in the 1950s Look for: • Horizontally oriented windows • Minimal expression of structure • Ribbon windows Notes: A dam built in 1915 on Holmes Run to supply water to the City of Alexan- dria was put up for sale in the 1940s. The reservoir, and surrounding land, was bought by Joseph V. Barger and Charles E. Dockser, who began developing Lake Barcroft in the 1950s.
