1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROLOGUE

With great pleasure, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Veritas Architects Sdn. Bhd. for

accepting me as an intern in this prestigious company. Also, I would like to express my appreciation

towards Principal at Veritas Architects Ar. Azril Amir Jaafar, supervisors Mr. Adrinfahd Adnan and Mr

Helmi Mohd Nor, fellow staff of Veritas Architects and Taylor’s University lecturer Mr. Prince Favis Isip for

the care and guidance given throughout the entire internship.

1.2 ESSAY

Internship training prepares us for working life after graduation by giving us the opportunity to gain

exposure and insight of the working world. This can be achieved by fulfilling tasks in various projects within

the company. Founded in 1987, Veritas Architects Sdn. Bhd. is an international design firm backed by a

team of over 330 qualified professionals in their Kuala Lumpur headquarters, making it the second largest

architecture firm in Malaysia by number of employees. The company can be further divided into interior

Figure 1: View of the Getah Asli Building where Veritas Architects is located

design, contracts and landscape departments. I felt fortunate to be given a chance to learn knowledge of

architectural practice in a company highly influential to Kuala Lumpur’s magnificent skyline for nine weeks.

Throughout the module, I was stationed at Level 12 of the Getah Asli Tower, which specializes on Middle

Eastern projects as well as several local ones. Most projects managed here are large-scaled such as multi-

storey hotels and condominiums. Here was where I was given tasks to do since the first day of my

internship. As my knowledge and experience within the architectural practice is severely limited, there is

much for me to learn.

In conclusion, I could acquire information about various project stages in an architectural practice during

the brief internship in Veritas. I learnt that there is always never a final design. Hence, many hours are

spent on amendments. Handling parts of multi-million dollar projects gave me a sense of responsibility

and I feel the burden on the shoulders of fellow architects. I also learnt about digital file compiling systems,

which is vital in team projects where files are handed over from person to person. The staff of Veritas

have been generous and supportive in enabling me to grow.

2.0 PROJECTS

2.1 FUJAIRAH HALF MOON BAY HOTEL, UAE

First, I assisted in the Half Moon Bay hotel project, which is a luxurious 14-storey five-star hotel with an

estimated cost of 200 million UAE dirhams and a total floor area of approximately 79870 square meters

situated at the East Coast of the United Arab Emirates. The hotel has 372 deluxe rooms, 51 suites and 8

penthouses. The client of this project is the current Sheikh of Fujairah Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi,

one of the ruling families in the United Arab Emirates. Still undergoing its schematic design stage, I assisted

in the meetings that discussed about spatial arrangement and placement of amenities. During this process,

I learned about door arrangement and fire escape regulations for optimum user safety. Moreover, I

enhanced my 3D modelmaking skills by being involved in the production of the digital model of the hotel

via Sketchup. I also familiarized myself with AutoCAD commands when drawing the floor plans.

2.2 KISH HOTEL, IRAN

Next, I was involved in a 4-star hotel project costing 40 million USD which is scheduled to be built on Kish

Island, Iran. The hotel is designed to have 17 floors and a total floor area of 37,338.25 m2. Using Photoshop

and PowerPoint, I created presentation slides which were presented to the client from Iran. As the design

stage proceeds, several amendments were done as the client gave comments via e-mail. Some of the

comments involve changing the whole façade of the building, resizing of functional spaces and amending

the total number of floors. Using my digital skills, I assisted in the amendment works and created rendered

sections, rendered floor plans and building matrixes using Photoshop. Using Microsoft Excel, I joined in

the floor area recalculation and tabulation efforts.

2.3 MENERUNG SEDIADA CONDOMINIUM, BANGSAR, KUALA LUMPUR

I helped in drawing the Ground Floor plan of the proposed Menerung Sediada Condominium, figuring

spatial solutions and filling in toilets, suraus, a departmental office and a mailbox room within the set floor

area. The client of this project is Bandar Raya Development Berhad and the site of the project is situated

in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. On 7 February 2017, we were given the chance to attend a Client-Consultant

Meeting held in the developer Bandar Raya Development Berhad (BRDB)’s headquarters. There we

observed how each consultant present their works and services for the client and other stakeholders to

comment on. Issues such as fire truck access, feature walls, pool depth, splashing from pools, proximity

of security guard and ramp arrangement were discussed.

2.4 INDIAN HIGH COMISSION BUILDING

Under the leadership of Ar. Lilian Tay, Director of Veritas Architects, the company participated in a

competition to bid for a project on Redeveloping the Chancery Complex and adjoining Residences of

Indian High Commission at Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur. As a temporary helper in the team, I studied on the

United Nation’s Embassy Perimeter Improvement Concepts and Design and created mock-up models for

the team’s experimentation purposes and learnt a thing or two on the circulation and safety criteria of

embassy design.

2.5 FUJAIRAH LEELA BEACH RESORT, UAE

After consulting the Sheikh of Fujairah, UAE, the project we worked on previously, the Half Moon Bay was

rejected due to lack of vantage points to the sea from the hotel tower. On the same site, the project is

renamed Leela Beach resort after the daughter of the royal Sheikh. The form of the whole project altered

and I repeated the process of drawing, rendering, tabulating and calculating using AutoCAD, Excel and

Photoshop for the following submission. I was given the task of preparing the presentation by utilizing

PowerPoint and learnt to create effective and aesthetically aligned visual slides.

2.6 STAR RESIDENCE, KUALA LUMPUR

On 20 February 2017, I followed Veritas Architects to the construction site of Star Residence KL, a high-

end residential project that costs RM 1 billion equipped with amenities such as swimming pools, banquet

rooms and gourmet dining area during a site inspection. The construction phase is 29% done and is

expected to be 223 metres tall when completed in 2019. The site is challenging as it is a unique site with

both Kenny Hill and limestone formations underground, giving extra work when establishing the

foundation and substructure works. Long hours were spent when casting concrete for huge raft structures

and transfer floors for the superstructure since construction commenced in November 2014.

2.8 MENARA PEJABAT SCIENCE PARK, CYBERJAYA

I helped creating a 3D model of a simple contemporary taxi stand which is to be placed at an empty space

at the site of the proposed Menara Pejabat Science Park in Cyberjaya for the local authority PKNS

(Selangor State Development Organization). From there, I improved my modelling skills and learnt on the

limitations of designing budget-constrained facilities. Real-life designing is sometimes not as fun as

architecture studio.

2.9 PULAI GOLF COURSE COMMERCIAL SHOPS, JOHOR

Next, I was involved in the schematic design for a low-rise commercial development on Pulai Golf Course,

Johor. I used AutoCAD to fill in staircases and toilets for the proposed shop unit layout. By compiling mood

images online and conducting research about community malls, I was exposed to relevant alternatives of

commercial design and stratified shop typologies. I then attended the inaugural Client-Consultant meeting

held in PJCC where engineers, technicians, and suppliers were briefed about the project’s concept and

scheduled timeline by the architect in charge. Through this experience, I learnt about etiquette of name

card exchanging and the importance of mood images during the first meeting.

2.10 MISCELLANEOUS

On the final week, I visited the nearly completed PKNS Headquarters in Shah Alam together with other

colleagues. The building flanks a lake park and has a roof garden. It has been awarded Double Platinum

status by GBI due to its green features such as solar harvesting. The site visit made me discover the

potentials of ‘returning land to nature’ via roof landscape design.

On 3 February 2017, I attended a briefing regarding ISO documents and requirements. I learnt that ISO is

a standard of documents based on procedures done in office. It is a form of branding that makes Veritas

Architects more recognized and legitimate, guaranteeing the quality of service provided by the company.

Detailed step-by-step instructions of procurement and tender procedures are written in the submitted

document. Job descriptions are highly detailed. There we observed how audits from the ISO committee

assess the company based on the organization’s clauses and standards. The audits choose 10 ongoing

projects by random and evaluated the progress and procedures of these projects. A certificate for 3 years

is expected to be received from ISO after the evaluation with a cost of RM28000.

Asides from doing architecture-related work, I used Photoshop to make mock newspapers to be handed

out before the mafia-themed Veritas Annual Dinner on 18 February 2016.

On 1 March 2017, Mr Peter Inglis, Hong Kong-based representative of Access Advisors, a professional

façade access consultant came to Veritas’ Conference Room for a supplier meeting and pitching session,

guaranteeing high quality, economical and safe solutions to building maintenance. Staff members of

Veritas are then introduced to various Building Maintenance Units that can deal with different types of

building shapes. If there is a recess, the supplier can provide options for cleaning access. From witnessing

this session, we learnt about the importance of space planning and facade inspection as well as ways to

keep the exterior of a building pristine and safe.
