DESIGN IDEAS

SPEED : The idea of speed inspired by Concorde SST, chosen for its supersonic speed, a ‘race car’ of its kind.

CULTURE: The front entrance is set back to mimic the front porch of Australian suburban houses.Podium to resemble the very podium used during F1 events to celebrate the winners.

HISTORY: The language of the form is translated from the history of evolution of car chasis starting 1920’s. Back then cars are more curvilinear, and around 60’s cars started to become boxy and eventually become more fierce and edgy during 2000’s.

BARLOW’S PERSONALITY: Spontaneity for the building is applied in away so that the building is closer to life by eliminating the defining boundaries to the exterior. The ground floor is designed to feel like a public space to reduce the intimidating feeling of a car showroom.

Design Concept

The Wyndham City Council Gateway calls for an innovative design that addresses image, icon, discourse and celebration.

The sculptures have been created as a response to the existing conditions on the site. Motorists travel the site past during both the day and night.

Thus, the sculptures have been designed so that they appear to change forms and materiality depending on the time of day they are experienced. Natural daylight enhances the sculptures by allowing the coloured backing of the otherwise black triangles to reflect off the mirror-like surface, adding colour to the sculptures.

The amount of colour reflection experienced by viewers is dependent upon the angle of observation. Given that the sculptures are viewed at a fast speed (80-100kmph), the changing colours appear to also be a change in form.

Page 15: Architecture Portfolio 2014

At night, when little light is experienced on site aside from that produced by the passing cars headlights, the sculptures disappear into the surrounding darkness, and are only illuminated when struck briefly by the headlights of travelling vehicles.

This effect creates a connection between the viewer and the sculpture which would naturally increase the viewer’s interest and attention. The triangulated components hung from the facade act as a screening device so that harsh light emitted from the sun or high beams at night do not cause too much glare and blind the driver.

Deception of Perception

Perception is often incfluenced by our knowledge of experience. That is why we are able to make assumptions without even knowing the whole story. Sometimes it might even be fallacies.

This building is designed to manipulate the perception of audience. What seems normal at first may not be so once approached or when viewed differently. Other than that, it is important for this building to monument the feelings of Kg. Kepayang before it was revitalized.

Design Ideas

Floating ImpressionMassive cantilevered structure over glass walls creates a sense of hazard to the deck below, same feeling as the deteriorating Kg. Kepayang entrance.

Page 17: Architecture Portfolio 2014

Twisted WallsThe twisted walls give an unexpected experience for the audience as uncomfortable feeling is provoked due to the illusion that the walls might collapse. The long, tall and narrow walls of visitors’ centre give heighten sense of drama and mystery.

Tinted GlassTinted glass is placed on the wall of the studio overlooking the rooftop graden. While the users may enjoy the warm and beautiful garden, there is something that feels quite awkward; like the works of Madame Peripetie.

Invisible JourneyThe ramp brings users from the ground floor to the first floor in almost oblivious way. The void may be the distraction that the journey to the upper level is not felt suddenly being in the visitors gallery especially when the ramp is also part of the visitors’ centre..

CONCEPT

Based on the main concept of Illusion of Vertigo, the idea of living on the edge is pushed to the limit. I want to jump-start a feeling of adrenaline rush at every corner possible. Since the house is

This retreat is designed with designer’s personality in mind –adventurous, cheerful, and impulsive.

This retreat house offers an escape from the busy reality, drifting the mind into nature and the sea.

VERTIGO HOUSE | PRIVATE RETREAT Design Studio 1, Year 2, Diploma of Architectural Technology (2010)

Page 19: Architecture Portfolio 2014

Adventurous: Having half of the spaces cantilevered over the cliff creates adrenaline rush, further enhanced by the elaborate cantilevered bedroom.

Cheerful: The house allows for plenty of natural light to match the designer’s cheerful mood. This also means getting up early, which is a bliss.

Impulsive: The open floor plan offers flexiblity in the activity that the designer wishes to do at any particular time.
