“Roads were initially built as rights of way to link locations of interest.“

“A road junction is a location where ]LOPJ\SHY[YHMÄJJHUJOHUNLIL[^LLUdifferent routes or directions of travel.”

What is the future of roads and road junctions?

Humanity grows exponential, so does the city’s infrastructure. It expands constantly to accommodate more people, more homes, more roads and more cars.

More cars means more roads.

For a better future of us and our cities we are forced to rethink spatial JVUÄN\YH[PVUZVMV\YYVHKZQ\UJ[PVUZHUKPU[LYJOHUNLZ>LZOV\SKÄUKthe way to make our cities hybrids, [VYLKLZPNUP[ZWHY[ZHZÅL_PISLHUKsustainable components.

What to do with such a huge monofunctional space?

It produces air and sound pollution.

It forces local people to use long and uncomfortable underground passages.

Paradoxically, by connect-ing city part with road lines, huge and massive road junction destroys fragile local urban fabric, unlinks its parts and, as a result, distorts spatial relationships.

GREEN DENOUEMENT/ D I P L O M A P R O J E C T /

I propose a green scenario for the future of road junctions. The receipt is: local food (hydro-ponic cells) + local fuel (algae biofuel stations) = green energy

On one hand, the new structure inside the road junction and be-[^LLUÅ`V]LYZPZHJVU[PU\V\Zspace, public park to connect separated pieces of land.

Inside the structure, above the road, I design vertical gardens, urban farming inside the hydro-ponic spiral cells, accompanied with farm market and restau-rants.

Cars passing by are served by drive-in farm market and biofuel ÄSSPUNZ[H[PVU

The porous morphology of space is produced by circle packing algorithm and functional 3d tool kit.

A process of circle distribution aims to determine the optimal position for each round component depending on its output parameter - radius and geometrical borders. Then, each 2d circle component gains its 3d representation out of functional tool kit : column, light well or donut.

Vertical farming is represented by spiral hydroponic tubes, creating an LU]PYVUTLU[VMPUÄUP[L[VWVSVN ̀

Thus, eventual space morphology crates a unique spatial and visual experiences, allows effective natural insulation and provides special visual connections.

If architecture is about space to host dynamic processes, how can me make that ZWHJLÅL_PISL&

How to design an apartment layout without any knowl-edge of its future inhabitant?

What is versatile space, the VUL[OH[Ä[ZL]LY`VULHUKeach of us individually?

>OH[PZHKHW[P]P[`HUKÅL_PIPS-ity with regard to space?

What is democracy of space?

Page 19: Architecture portfolio/ Olga Fomina

OLGA FOMINA PORTFOLIO ARCHITECTURE19

I suppose the democracy of space can be measured by the possibilities of changing it’s properties according to our demands.

The Do It Yourself principle is set on basis of my residential housing project and rejects the idea of any ready made apartment layout.

We should design not just space, but a space of dialogue. Architecture be-comes an interface, it reacts, it adapts, it is in a process of constant change.

The residential unit is a partition 3.5 m x 11 m x 4.5 m. The life cycle scenario includes the possibility of mezzanine growth within the combination of one, two or three partitions.

The families inside each apartment are in a process of constant change, that’s why the ability to adapt and change is vi tal for space.

The adaptive facade system is based on idea of bending ribbons and sen-sors.

Every single inhabitant has the priority to adapt and change the his or her own part of facade, and, as a result, form the whole out of single pieces.

Facade prototype was designed with ARDUINO microcontoller and light sensors. Every single apart-ment has its own individual control panel. Thus, space for living becomes an interface, controlled by its inhabitant.

Theatre is a place for dynamics of act and gesture,

a place of a dialogue between actor and spectator.

The process of constant interaction, actors and spectators can be interpret-ed as emergent systems SPRLÅVJRZ

;OH[»Z^O`)VPKZHUHY[PÄJPHSlife program, developed by Craig Reynolds in 1986, ^OPJOZPT\SH[LZ[OLÅVJR-ing behaviour of birds, was taken as a start point for a MVYTÄUKPUNWYVJLZZ

During the research part several simulation were THKL[VÄ_[OL[YHJRZVMÅVJRZWVW\SH[PUN[OLZP[Lbypassing obstacles ( exist-ing buildings) and interacting with each other.

The result of dynamic interactions was interpreted as an emergent space for programme components to populate.

The rules applied in the simplest Boids world are as follows:- separation: steer to avoid JYV^KPUNSVJHSÅVJRTH[LZ- alignment: steer towards the average heading of local ÅVJRTH[LZ- cohesion: steer to move toward the average posi-tion (center of mass) of local ÅVJRTH[LZ

Our urban concept is based on idea to give people a possibility to work and live at the same district. 0[GZ]P[HSMVYSVJHSWLVWSL[VÄUKeverything they need in a walking distance. It gives a possibility to en-QV`WPJ[\YLZX\LZ\YYV\UKPUNZ!ÄLSKZand forest, pond and park.

So, the concept is to restore old houses, raise the density in some areas to maintain perimeter devel-opment, reorganize the territory of 14 ha of abandoned warehouses, make yards more cosy.

Social integration is a great part of the concept as well. In that case we propose a chain of public space that can be used as a cow-orking space, workshop space, market space. Different house typology is provided to provoke social integration as well as to make district more eco-nomically attractive and sustainable. Optimization of road system and pedestrian ways, new bicycle routs and accessibility - are to better Podlipki region.

Freelance is getting more and more popular in Kolomna city in Moscow district. The main reason is that families don`t want to be separated during the whole day.

Nowadays it`s more convenient to have working space at home. Reaching a ^VYRWSHJLVYVMÄJLPZX\P[LHYV\[PULP[GZHS^H`ZHIV\[^HZ[PUN`V\Y[PTLPU[YHMÄJjams and wasting your money on fuel.

The main goal of the project was to create a living space combined with working space.

Apartment house project combines liv-ing apartment and place for coworking. ;OLYLHYL[`WLZVMÅH[ZHSTVZ[HSSVMthem organized on two or three levels to provide better environment.

Coworking space appears on different levels and provides space for neigh-bours to chat, work or play.

When we say Library - we think about books, when we say Media Library - what we think about? Internet, digital books, video, music, documentary, virtual reality?

I designed Media Library as a 3rd place, it`s not a home nor a work-place, but people can live and work there.

The shape of the Media Library is formed by several minimal surfaces called costa surfaces, that generate HZWHJLVMPUÄUP[L[VWVSVN ̀

School Reconstruction was followed by technical research of building construction and materials. It showed that building needs extra insulation and strengthening of bearing walls.

One of the main points was to propose LULYN`LMÄJPLU[HUKZ\Z[HPUHISLYLJVUZ[Y\J-tion of a 50 years old brick hostel building and designing a new part for swimming and sport facilities for a cadet primary school.

That`s why our design includes ventilation system with heat recuperation, rain water har-vesting and reuse it as a grey water; ground collector and pv panels, passive north and active south facades produce enough elec-tricity for a school.

Steve Jobs is admired and criticized for his consummate skill at persuasion and sales-manship, which has been dubbed the “reality KPZ[VY[PVUÄLSK¹9+-HUKPZWHY[PJ\SHYS`L]PKLU[during his keynote speeches.

The RDF is Steve Jobs’ ability to convince himself and others to believe in almost HU`[OPUN^P[OHTP_VMZ\WLYÄJPHSJOHYTcharisma, bravado, hyperbole, marketing, appeasement, and persistence.

RDF is said to distort an audience’s sense of proportion and scales and makes them believe that the task at hand is possible.

Pop-up platform is not static, but dynamic one. It works like a hyperlink.

If Steve will have an ability to appear in different places of the universe at one time, his pro-ductivity will increase and RDF will broaden.

Pop-up platforms are linked and activates immediately when Steve appears.

Nowadays people cover distances with-out getting acquainted with surroundings. They pay a little attention on road landscapes and comprehend it as a transit zone.

Travellers don`t realize that landscapes are part of space and could tell a lot about their destination.

Our primitive hut is a place that provides you a possibility to observe your destination. It means to think a bit on where you are going and explore the process of moving in space.

Primitive hut is a box, oriented by the vector of your destination. It has only one window and only one door.
