COMMODORE’S COMMENT

Opening Day came and went with a bang. Again, we had a fantastic turnout with members old and new joining us to celebrate the beginning of a new sailing season. This season has presented new challenges for us with the construction of Forrest Hall on our doorstep. We have worked hard to develop our own access and parking strategies and I thank all members for their patience and understanding of the issues at hand. With the calendar year quickly winding down we look forward to some special events to see us into the New Year. Christmas Treat day is a major event on our social calendar and is a great time for families and friends to come together to celebrate this wonderful occasion. Word has it that Santa is planning something special this year which may involve some acrobatics and stunts.

CHRISTMAS TREAT

The PDSC Christmas treat and Family Fun Day will be on Saturday 17th December from 12.00 noon. Santa will arrive at 5.00pm. Fun for the whole family with on shore activities and sailing opportunities for all. Bring your friends and family and pack a picnic dinner.

NEW YEARS EVE

Since the last Spraytalk, a number of items have been added to the Club’s Archives. Thank you to Greg Moore who donated various items of ephemera and to Lesley Devine who donated a number of past Sailing Programmes. These have been placed in their respective folders in the Archive Room. Sailing Programmes still missing from the collection include those prior to 1952, years between 1955 and 1962, 1966–67, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74,1986-1987, 1987-1988, 1991-1992,1992-93,1993-94,1994-1995,1995-1996. If you have any of these programmes and would care to donate them to the Club, they would be much appreciated. The refreshing of the display cabinets in the museum is underway and it is quite interesting reading the inscriptions on the various items. Labels are being made to make this information more viewable without the need to handle the item. One interesting trophy is The Challenge Cup 14ft Australasian Championship. The inaugural race for this was in 1911 but then taken out of circulation in 1922 because it had been won by the same yacht “John Nimmo” skippered by H.C. Brooke three times in a row. In those days, if that happened, you kept it! Previous winners engraved on the cup are “St. George”, “Rene”, “Edna”, and “Violet II”. A photo of the cup is above. Take a look at the cup in the Museum – it really is quite lovely. Dixie Moore

INTERNATIONAL 14

It’s been a great start to the 2016/17 season with big fleet numbers each week. We have had the full range of weather conditions already which has allowed a good mix of results. Still Brad and Footy seem to always find a way to win. Brams and Stevie have been busy in the off season sporting a new mast from NZ which has unfortunately broken at the tip in a spectacular stack. Looking forward to seeing him out on the water again soon. Stu has a new crew, young Steve from the Cherub fleet who is rapidly finding his feet on the boat and they have had some good results in the light breezes. Steve Vance came back from the Worlds with a lot more experience and skills and demonstrated that with a couple of wins this season already. The older Vances took out a cheeky win on the weekend proving they are still are a force to be reckoned with. Been a few boats having an extra sail on Friday evening and enjoying the clear river and all that summer has to offer. Would be great to see more boats come and join us, especially as the Nationals are being held here at Christmas. It is expected to be a very ‘hot’ fleet, with the Aussies filling 5 of the top 10 places in the Worlds. There are some good deals on B5 boats at the moment in Victoria and with the worlds here in 2020 this is a great time to enter into the class – spread the word.

See you on the water, Cammy.

JAVELIN JIVE

A month into the 2016-17 season has seen the Javelin fleet fielding smaller numbers than in past seasons despite having a healthy number of paid up and registered competitors.

Despite this, some results have been closely competed for with line honours being settled by mere seconds. Clearly with only two boats having sailed and completed all races so far, (there have been a number of DNFs in the fresh windy conditions), the consistency results support the fact that you have to be on the water and finishing to figure in the prize money. Handicaps have had some minor adjustments to support the current situation and numbers to support the on-water performances so far achieved. With two races into the Club Championships, the cream has risen to the top with two bullets being fired at the same combination. Following our recent “tree meetings” prior to going racing on Saturdays, we have agreed to continue these forums as required throughout the season. Thanks to those who have indicated they are available to share in attending to Javelin stuff when issues need to be resolved. A reminder to all sailors in the Javelins that you should have now joined and paid fees to the Association to keep our class on the move and viable. Forms are available to be filled in. We have applied through the Club for water space to hold the next nationals to be held in Perth during the 2017-18 season. With respect to the forthcoming championships to be held at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club in Victoria, contact has been made with the Victorians to inform them that there will be no WA boats competing. The Victorians are assessing the impact of this situation, given that they have committed to the Gippsland club which does not sail Javelins. Naturally they are concerned for the future and I have undertaken to contact and discuss with them options for going forward. We need to consider the matter in the near term and a meeting will be held soon to discuss the situation. See you on or near the water. G M

SABRE SCENE

Well we have had a good start to the season, Opening day was a very good turnout, close to 20 boats started, we were by far the largest fleet on the day. Opening Day also saw the Christening of a new Sabre for Rob Depiazzi (Comanche) and a new Member to the club Gavin Davies (Moonshadow), unfortunately Rob has sustained a knee injury and has to rest (but he has taken to assisting on the Safety Boat) and Gavin has indicated he will be up at the front of the fleet. For the Sabres, Opening Day also was the last race in our Opening Day Series, well done to an Old PDSC Member Scott Olsen who was the winner, followed by Ed Bannerman (EFYC), third was Peter Coop (EFYC). Tony Carr (PDSC) finished 4th. Since Opening day, we have continued to had a good fleet each week, racing has been tight at the front with Tony Carr so far, this season topping the list, let’s hope that he keeps going fast for the Nationals. There have also been close finishes for the minor positions with Clayton, Ian, Karl and great to see Mike Dean knocking on the door. Good to see both Narelle and Heide out on the water. There are a few boats from the PDSC that are getting tuned up for the Melbourne Nationals, there have been sightings of PDSC Sabres out on a Friday night and also some taking the long trek to Safety Bay on a Sunday, need to get used to being in those waves. The Sabre Fleet would like to take this opportunity to wish all Members and their families and Merry Christmas and a Save New Year. See you all in the year 2017… Secret Sabre

SIGNET SIGNPOST

With nine boats registered, the Signets are looking set for another strong season. We are delighted to welcome Mark and Phoemela to the fleet in DAC and it was great to see Warren Kunzli drag our Pyros with

HERON HAPPENINGS

his son Oliver, giving the front of the fleet a scare on their first outing. Huey has delivered some solid breezes for the first month. David and Kay made a (un)forgettable start to the season. Bravely heading out to the start in a freshening breeze, it all went horribly wrong on the first down wind when the chines dug in, sending the mast to the mud and the rudder and crew drifting towards the Narrows. Thanks to Russ and Footy in the safety RIB, who struggled into the wind and waves to tow the stricken The Menace home. They weren’t the only retirement on a trying day, with Peter Harffey and Jake Fitzsimmons the only finishers. Some new combinations are quickly making an impression at the front of the fleet. Nelly Sadler is enjoying her first season crewing for Kim Prance in The Phantom, leading the Club and State Championships. They are closely followed by old hands Peter and Jake (yes, I know Pete, less of the old bit please) in Katie and another new combination in Sean Glissen and Jenny Geelen, sailing Just Jenny. With all boats showing they can be competitive on their day, it promises to be a fascinating season.

The Menace under tow

Herons have a noticeably small fleet this season, with only five boats. However despite small numbers Jeremy sees no reason to slow down and has charged through the season so far with flying colours. Anthony is trialing more laid back approach to the season. Ah and then there is Cailan and Holly, who are still trying to figure out what on earth they are doing!! Every race John (Tranby) has sailed he has finished up well. John (Panic!) is busy getting the hang of things.

JAY DEE JABBER

Well done to the two JayDees that were on the water last two Saturdays. Holly Fitzsimons and her Crew and Jonathan and Sam. The other JayDee sailors are madly trying to hone their skills for the Open Bic nationals. After the

nationals there will be some serious JayDee sailing to catch up on. But we do have some other really EXCITING NEWS We were successful in our application to The Minister for Water; Sport and Recreation; Forestry for a $500 subsidy for Community Sporting Club Equipment. We wish to thank all the people who helped us with this application especially Dean Caple from Yachting Australia who sent us the email regarding this subsidy and Narelle Thomas who was able to answer those tricky business questions like "What is the JayDee abn number?" Many thanks to all our hard working club members Kind regards Rob and Ness Hampson

CHERUB CHATTER

As usual the PDSC Cherub fleet has had a busy start to the season, to start it all off we had the annual Cade Matthews Memorial race at EFYC, it was great turnout with some challenging winds, well done to Brad Luketina & Cam Bryant on Pandamonium who won! PDSC & MBSC also kindly hosted our Sprint Series across two days, Saturday at PDSC was quite trying winds, a few on the water repairs. MBSC on the Sunday was a little quieter. Hayden Hunt dusted the cobwebs off Sir Brave Robin & really put on a show, he gave Smurf Crease a run for its money! We hope to see Hayden getting his boat out more often. 1st - Smurf Crease: Todd McVee, Steve Fryer & Steve Vance 2nd - Pandamonium: Brad Luketina, Elliot Mahar & Cam Bryant 3rd - Serenity Now: Virginia Horn & Jacques Audet The 54th Cherub National Championships are to be held at Drummoyne Sailing Club over the Christmas/New year period 2016/17. After the big effort a lot of the fleet made for last Nationals in Queensland only one boat is heading over to compete. Virginia & Jacques have been putting a great effort in, training a few times a week, repairs, a new set of sails. We wish you two the best of luck!! Teesh Cook

O’PEN BIC

29ers

r

The first seven weeks of the season has seen a growth in the 29er fleet with approximately 7 boats appearing on the start line each Saturday afternoon, making for some exciting tactics on the start line and during the club races/ heats. The clubs Perth Waters Coaching Regatta provided to be immensely helpful for the fleet, especially on the Saturday when Hayley Clarke (recent 29er Female World Champion) shared some words of wisdom with the sailors on how she overcame problems that the sailors are experiencing presently. Hayley inspired many of the sailors to train hard and prepare well for the upcoming Nationals in Adelaide in the coming year. Other Saturday mornings have also seen the new 29er coach Brad Devine kicking into gear with a new training drill each week. These have been very fruitful with each team taking away something and learning a small skill/manoeuvre each week. Only 4 more weekends to prepare before we head over to Adelaide! Ash Newbury

The O’Pen Bics continue to thrive with some new Silver fleet sailors joining Footy Furlong for Saturday morning training. These sailors will be collecting the gold-fleet silverware in two years if we manage it right. The gold fleet has been bolstered this year by the addition of Barney Woo and Ethan Miragliotta who joined us from EFYC. The gold fleet consists of about 10 regulars who continue to train on Saturday morning and race in the bay on Saturday afternoons. I’m sure that most of you will have noticed how competent they are getting in all breeze ranges, and are transitioning to JDs during lunchtime. Barney recently won the Musto regatta on count-back from Will Drew with Matt Hanrahan third and Rosie Hennessy fourth on count back from Sam Rose. This group of five sailed very consistently over the weekend to a very high standard. The Perth Waters regatta, two weeks later was won by Will with Rosie second, Matt third, and Barney fourth. The following weekend, Will travelled to Sydney and won the U16 division (2nd overall) in the NSW States beating all the major contenders for this years Nationals (Vics, QLDers, Kiwis SAs and NSWmen). Our local fleet is the hottest in the nation right now and we are hoping to dominate the top 10 in the U16 division, and place highly in the U13 division with Jenna Everett showing great form. Next week will see the fleet decamp to the International classes regatta at RFBYC before returning to PDSC the following weekend for the WA States on December 10th and 11th. The boats will go into the container (thanks to Clayton Erwin) immediately following the final race to head over to the ISAF youth circus in Adelaide. The Nationals will be run by Henley Sailing Club from January 4th to 10th. Entries are still flowing in but we expect to

take a team of about 18 boats from WA, with Travis Burtenshaw travelling as coach. The O’Pen Bic is proving to be a real tonic for junior sailing in this state and this club. The association thanks all the members and management committee for all the support that has been lavished upon this group.
